American Girl Live on Tour

Perhaps it was inevitable that, having conquered nearly every other medium, American Girl dolls would finally make their way to the stage. The new Broadway-style musical American Girl Live is a natural extension of The American Girl Revue, which was performed in American Girl stores in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles during the early 2000s.

Beloved by children and adults alike since the company was founded by Pleasant Rowland in 1986, the 18-inch American Girl dolls and their accompanying book series have evolved from an independent start-up operating out of a rented warehouse into a thriving Mattel toys subsidiary, with more than 32 million dolls and 157 million books sold to date.

The American Girl Revue told the back stories of the company's Historical Characters line, and American Girl Live expands upon that concept in an even more entertaining way. The setting is Camp American Girl, a fictitious sleep-away compound where five campers, a counselor, and their doll friends interact with six iconic American Girl characters — Rebecca (1914), Nanea (1941), Maryellen (1954), Melody (1964), Julie (1974), and Luciana (2018's Doll of the Year) — through song and dance.

In keeping with American Girl's commitment to female empowerment, The American Girl Review was created by an all-woman creative team consisting of producer Simone Gianfrancesco, director Gina Rattan, writer and lyricist Sandy Rustin, composer Meg Zervoulis, and choreographer Emilie Renier. (Actress Julia Roberts' Red Om production company created the brand's first movie, Samantha: An American Girl Holiday, in 2004.)

In 1995, American Girl expanded its line beyond historical dolls to include characters and situations from contemporary life. Pleasant Rowland wanted her characters to take themselves seriously and to participate in American life, so her books covered important historical topics such as child labor, poverty, racism, slavery, and war. American Girl characters support equality in all its forms. And the limited-edition release of the homeless American Girl character Gwen in 2009 revealed that the company wouldn't avoid controversy, either.

Ticket holders are welcome to bring their own dolls to American Girl Live. Whether they do or not, the interactive experience will fuel the audience's imagination and promote the positive power of girlhood with or without their smaller companions.

    AG live Lexington

    by s. m. on 1/29/19Lexington Opera House - Lexington

The play was great. Had a good message for girls. My only complaint -LEAVE YOUR TODDLERS AT HOME- they do not and will not understand and it is not for them. I love kids. I have 3 and a grandchild. But people brought kids less than 2. I mean it’s unrealistic for Anyone to think they will sit and watch a play for 2 hours. It kind of ruined our experience with the screaming and crying of the ones behind us. Anyone 5 and over with an American girl doll will enjoy!

Fun but too young for my kids

by Ann on 1/29/19Lexington Opera House - Lexington

The show was great for young children, but it was a little too kiddish for my granddaughter who has an American Girl doll she loves. She's nine. I think the show was geared more to five and six year old girls and was great for that age. The actors were all very accomplished and the songs and dances were cute. I should have gone on line and looked for reviews so I would know it was a show for younger children. But the venue was great. Our seats were in the first balcony but we had no problem seeing all the action. Entry in and out was easy. Love the Opera House. Beautiful place to take in a show.

Great show that my girls (age 8 &11) loved. Very empowering for girls, just wish my 3 year old son would stop saying “Girl Power!!” so much now. Ha!

Such a wonderful production of girl power and strength!! Beautiful venue and the workers were all so nice. I so wish they would have made a sound track of all the songs... That was the only bummer.

American Girl Live was awesome from the beginning to the end. The acting was great and the set design impressive and well done. We took my two grandaughters ages 7 and 12 and they were both very excited and enjoyed every minute.

My 9 year old thought it was 11/10 stars!

by KY mom on 1/28/19Lexington Opera House - Lexington

I had very low expectations and thought the show was okay but not great. But my 9 year old daughter and her friend LOVED this show. They liked the characters, the positive message and the songs. I thought they might be a little old for American Girls but they really enjoyed it so much that it was completely worth it. The VIP experience was a box lunch of PB&J sandwich, apples, a dirt cake cup and a craft and first in line for the photo experience. It would have been nice for adults to get a little more to eat.

I brought my daughter-in-law and granddaughter to see American Girl Live. My granddaughter was thrilled to see her American Girl doll, Luciana, in the show. We all enjoyed it very much.

    American Girl Show

by M. D. on 1/23/19Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center - Red Bank

The play was very well done. The message of girl power, working together, kindness and cooperation was perfect for an auditorium full of young girls. I just thought in the end the finale could have mentioned some of the other dolls. Most of the children there brought their dolls and would have been excited to hear their name. Otherwise, it was a wonderful show and enjoyed by all.
