American Girl Live on Tour
Perhaps it was inevitable that, having conquered nearly every other medium, American Girl dolls would finally make their way to the stage. The new Broadway-style musical American Girl Live is a natural extension of The American Girl Revue, which was performed in American Girl stores in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles during the early 2000s.
Beloved by children and adults alike since the company was founded by Pleasant Rowland in 1986, the 18-inch American Girl dolls and their accompanying book series have evolved from an independent start-up operating out of a rented warehouse into a thriving Mattel toys subsidiary, with more than 32 million dolls and 157 million books sold to date.
The American Girl Revue told the back stories of the company's Historical Characters line, and American Girl Live expands upon that concept in an even more entertaining way. The setting is Camp American Girl, a fictitious sleep-away compound where five campers, a counselor, and their doll friends interact with six iconic American Girl characters â Rebecca (1914), Nanea (1941), Maryellen (1954), Melody (1964), Julie (1974), and Luciana (2018's Doll of the Year) â through song and dance.
In keeping with American Girl's commitment to female empowerment, The American Girl Review was created by an all-woman creative team consisting of producer Simone Gianfrancesco, director Gina Rattan, writer and lyricist Sandy Rustin, composer Meg Zervoulis, and choreographer Emilie Renier. (Actress Julia Roberts' Red Om production company created the brand's first movie, Samantha: An American Girl Holiday, in 2004.)
In 1995, American Girl expanded its line beyond historical dolls to include characters and situations from contemporary life. Pleasant Rowland wanted her characters to take themselves seriously and to participate in American life, so her books covered important historical topics such as child labor, poverty, racism, slavery, and war. American Girl characters support equality in all its forms. And the limited-edition release of the homeless American Girl character Gwen in 2009 revealed that the company wouldn't avoid controversy, either.
Ticket holders are welcome to bring their own dolls to American Girl Live. Whether they do or not, the interactive experience will fuel the audience's imagination and promote the positive power of girlhood with or without their smaller companions.
We enjoyed the show. However, I feel it was geared more to little children age 3-6.
Awesome show! Great message! My 8 year old and I loved it! âMom, BEST show weâve been too!!â. So great to see some of our favorite characters come to life. Definitely a must see for American Girl fans đ
Beautiful show to share with the girls,we really enjoyed!
The idea of the show is really good, the girls sing amazing and is very entertaining for adults and kids. My 8 years old daughter and I love it
A super cute first musical for your little girl! Donât forget your doll just for fun!
The young actresses in the show were phenomenal - great job on their part. However the story line was a little lame and I definitely paid WAY TOO MUCH for the tickets.
Maybe I was naive to think this was going to be a musical that was more of a production. I expected much more. There wasnât much of a set or anything that really wowed me. I could also see the stage crew on the sides. I know Disney is much bigger, but I thought American Girl would put a little more into the show. The tickets were a little expensive for the quality. All that being said, the messages were fantastic!!!!! The actors were cute. And, if youâre a little kid, maybe you donât notice the other stuff.
The American Girl Show was wonderful! My seven year old and I really enjoyed the story, the scenery and most especially the singing. The performers are incredibly talented. The show was the perfect length for young children too. The message of the play was sweet and empowering. I would recommend to all.
The show sounded great, but in orchestra seats which we paid a premium price for we could barely see a thing. We were not alone with all the kids round us complaining and frustrated. The venue and the show organizers need to think about who their target audience are .... little kids .... who couldnât see a thing over the big speaker boxes at the front of the stage. Seating is one level. We were in row B. It was more frustrating than enjoyable for both myself and daughter, some good actresses though.
The show was amazing. Our 8 year old girl loved every minute of it. Between the story line of empowerment of girls, the singing, dancing, the dolls and the set, it met and exceeded our expectations! Great job!
There were 100âs of pre school and school age children. All were totally into the show.
We had a wonderful time. The show was very entertaining with a great message. The music was louder than the girls voices-it was difficult to hear the words to the songs, we wanted to hear every word! Our Kaitlyn enjoyed her early birthday present!! The props were very creative and functional-well done!!
My girls (8 and 10 years old) loved American Girl Live! They loved the music, the dancing, and the message behind the various girl/doll scenes. They connected on what the play was communicating and it was well done. They left the play happy and ready to experience the âworld!âđâ¤ď¸
Only complaint would be that there was no place for the audience and little children to go but out into 17* weather after the show, while waiting for our rides. Due to the meet and greet. Over all, wonderful show! Thank you
My granddaughters loved it! The singing and dancing was great. Lots of energy!
My daughter and I loved it! Great uplifting girl power story line!
Started a bit slow but overall really cute show with a positive message
My daughter loved it!!! Perfect for a nine year old!
American girl live was a wonderful mother daughter experience. The Lexington Opera House was an intimate setting and not a bad seat in the house. The show was entertaining and kept my 8 year old daughter engaged. The music and story was original and followed girls as they attended summer camp along with their favorite American girl dolls. The dolls take on character and are a part of the story as well. I recommend that girls come to the show with their favorite doll (I didnât see any little girl without one). We also had afternoon tea at a cafe across the street from the theater and the dolls got their own seat. After the show we went to a Starbucks across the street and the cast came in to get coffee in their street clothes. They were just as friendly and charming in real life as they were during the show. I highly recommend the show if you have a little one who loves American Girl...you wonât be disappointed.
Highly recommended! My 10 year old and her two friends LOVED it!
