About

AMERICA IN CONCERT:

Iconic folk rockers America have been performing to sold out crowds since the '70s, treating generations of fans to genre classics like “A Horse With No Name” and “Sister Golden Hair."  Considered a top-shelf  touring act, the band thrilled fans with the announcement of a 2014 coast-to-coast U.S. tour of their greatest hits.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

“The concert was exceptional. The band has not missed a lick in 42 years, which is how long it has taken me to finally see my favorite band.”

“They are just as good as when I first saw them in 1976, and I will continue to see them year after year… Their voices never seem to change, and in addition to all of their popular hits, they sang less popular songs from their albums, which I loved.”

“Played all their big hits and then some, with covers of "California Dreamin" by The Mamas and The Papas and "‘Til I Hear It from You" by the Gin Blossoms—a surprise. They sounded excellent from start to finish.”

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Gerry Beckley, Dewey Burnell and Dan Peek were barely out of high school when they first made a splash in the British folk-rock scene as America. Not only did they score an international hit with “A Horse With No Name,” but they took home the 1972 Grammy for Best New Musical Artist. A string of additional hits would follow, including “Ventura Highway,” “Daisy Jane,” “Tin Man” and “Lonely People.” In 2007, the band surprised fans with Here & Now -- their first album release since 1998's Human Nature -- earning praise from critics and kicking-off another successful tour. In 2011, America once again headed into the studio to record Back Pages, a collection of covers including renditions of songs by Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, and the Gin Blossoms.

  • Great tunes but muffled audio?

by Sue on 10/21/24Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 4 out of 5

The band was great, and when members were speaking the voices were crisp, but during songs audio seemed fuzzy?? Not sure how to describe it. Still enjoyed the show!

  • Awesome nonstop music and entertainment!

by Ron on 10/21/24Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

What a beautiful theater! Excellent acoustics with comfortable and spacious seating. The concert had no opening acts and no intermission so it was nothing but great music and fun that brought back memories of some of the best years and times of my life. It also started early enough ended at a time that was perfect for a “senior” like myself! :)

Well put together show with a lot of nice tracks. Vocals were good. Recommended.

  • Great Show

    by 2002flstc on 10/21/24Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

Sat up in the balcony, but the show was still great. All those old songs we all loved from the 70's. Gerry Beckley no longer tours with the band, so it is only Dewey Bunnell and some younger musicians who are very good. I had never seen them before, but I enjoyed it thoroughly. They are highly recommended.

  • Obstructed View

by Jetergirl on 10/21/24Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 3 out of 5

I bought these tickets close to the front so I could actually see the performers. As it turns out, there were two large speakers stacked on each other at the front of the stage that obliterated our vision of the entire right side of the stage and video screen. The lighting was also terrible. When a band member stepped to the front of the stage for a solo, there were no spotlights so they were in the dark. The music was good. Definitely prefer their songs with the great harmony as opposed to their hard rock songs. The show was short.

  • Wasnt impressed

by mimi on 10/21/24Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 2 out of 5

For the price I paid for the ticket and they only performed for a little over and hour, I was very dissapointed

  • Took me back to my youth

by BetsyK on 10/21/24Hershey Theatre - HersheyRating: 5 out of 5

America exceeded my expectations! The band was tight, the harmonies beautiful and the digital images really added to the story of their music. I especially was captivated by the war and protest imagery of Sandman, released in 1971. Go see this band while they are still touring.

  • Interesting

by Nip on 10/20/24DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 3 out of 5

Expected two of the original band but only one. Songs are good but vocals were so so with the music loud. Couldn’t hear vocals very well. Wouldn’t bother with attending another America live concert

  • Amazing music, phenomenal musicians

by Born Again Chaser on 10/14/24DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

What a great concert! With the VIP package we got to meet Dewey Bunnell. Incredibly gracious to spend some time with us and answer our questions. Such a humble gentleman. He hasn’t lost a step with age. Great vocals, great music. We had a fantastic time.

  • A Feel-Good Time

by Nomad on 10/14/24DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

The show was enjoyable. The selections were great and generally well played, though only one of the three original members remains. Played a lot of their hits though not all of them and covered two songs of others. Good charisma wiht the audience. Wish they with a two or three song encore instead of just one. Definitely worth it. In terms of the venue, it was great. Good sight lines and acoustics were great. Staff friendly and helpful. Access very easy.

  • Excellent show!

by Tony on 10/13/24DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

Wow, I'm so happy I got to see this band! Excellent rock and roll mixed with so many pop hits and good stories. Brought back such good feelings and memories. Thank you America! Ride on!

  • Very disappointing

by John on 10/13/24DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 1 out of 5

The replacement band members didn't sound like the original members they were replacing. The sounds they picked were not the favorites that the audience went to see.......

  • Music and Memories

by kyle on 10/12/24DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 4 out of 5

We enjoyed the music and our memories of the group that was one of the main soundtracks of our lives. The slide show in the background was great too. My only criticism would be the bands sound system could have been better. It seemed like the microphones were turned down too low.

  • Well produced, enjoyable evening

by JohnRovi on 10/12/24DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 5 out of 5

We have seen "America"a couple of times previously, but those were just tours of the group, which was nice but not top notch, and in smaller venues. This production has some money, skill and direction behind it, so it was musically excellent, the videos were informative and well-suited, the show was terrific, more of a spectacular rendtion of a band whose music has a big presence in our world.

  • Good but could have been better

by Rob on 10/12/24DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 4 out of 5

Have been waiting awhile to see America, a fan for 50+ years. Glad to see Dewey is still there, but didn’t find out until after tickets were purchased that Gerry Beckley has retired from touring. Not the same when you lose half of the band. The replacement guitarist/singer was ok, but doesn’t sound anything like Gerry, so disappointing. And they barely played for 90 minutes, started at 7:45 and done at 9:15. Never been to a concert that short. And Dewey was the only old guy there. Played all their hits, glad I went, but I wouldn’t go again.

  • Short

by America on 10/12/24DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 4 out of 5

They started 10 minutes late and it was over by 9 pm!! That was the shortest concert I've ever been to!! Everyone was joking that it was because they're old. Enjoyed the video clips; they sounded good.

  • Concert

America played great, all the favorites were played.

  • Missing half..

by TomD on 10/12/24DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - DurhamRating: 3 out of 5

So sad that Gerry has retired. Not the same show without him. Love Dewey but not enough for 90 min. Still enjoyed the show but would not see again without both.

  • America

The DPAC is one of the most convenient venues and the ushers are very friendly and help. The America concert didn’t disappoint. 70’s music is the best
