America I Am was a good experience

by CreamDream on 9/11/09Atlanta Civic Center - Atlanta

I learned a few things throughout the exhibit and I was also reminded of many things that I don't tend to think about on a daily basis. This is a good event to especially take your kids to get an in-person history lesson and see it head on. It is also good for your whole family to experience together.

My husband and I enjoyed the exhibit. We went on a Thursday. It was not crowded. So, we were able to take our time and truly enjoy the experience..It was great seeing so much history in one location. I encourage everyone to attend.

    Stunning

by mochaquilter on 9/8/09Atlanta Civic Center - Atlanta

The exhibit was moving, enthralling, very approachable for all ages. It presented information I did not know and I am very steeped in Black History. The artifacts were unbelievable--from the items from the Birmingham Jail where Dr. King was confined to the Door of No Return in Ghana . The multimedia nature of the exhibit kept it interesting and involving. I loved that the audio feed was different than the written material. It made me feel like I was getting additional insights into the material. I loved that and everything about this exhibit.

    America I Am

by EpiphanyJ on 9/8/09Atlanta Civic Center - Atlanta

The exhibit was excellent. Kudos to Tavis Smiley for all of his hard work and dedicaiton to bring this to different venues around the country. I especially hope our young people will leave with a deeper understanding and appreciation for the cloth they are cut from. The musical tribute at the end of the exhibit was profound, inspiring, and so true. African Americans built this country, and their imprint has influenced every aspect of American culture.

    The video presentations were superb!

by Akil on 9/7/09Atlanta Civic Center - Atlanta

The exhibit was absolutely excellent. Tracing the African American experience from African to America was presented in a very factual and chronological way. However, I do not recall seeing any form of presentation or representation about Elijah Muhammad, Minister Louis Farrakhan and The Million Man March or Miles Davis. Why?

by jontroibumpus on 9/7/09Atlanta Civic Center - Atlanta

This exhibit was a walk through my ancestral history. There are were many things that I knew, but so much more I never heard before. This exhibit is a much needed experience for all people. This will help all cultures and creeds understand the imprint of the Black culture.

    We expected more

by stewkhandi on 9/6/09Atlanta Civic Center - Atlanta

The expectation our family had upon arriving was a history lesson that would help fill in the gaps on historical things we did not know. As it turn out we knew more history than what was shown. The beginning of the exhibit was impressive. The room of the Ghana slave port castle was great. Once we left there it was down hill the rest of the way. The rooms that followed were filled with artifacts, some real ,some replicas and other that made no sense. Each room had a theme, which most of the time went off track. The most confusing being the "Music Room"? The best part of the exhibit was the ending short film. In whole it was as if the exhibit was not completely done. Too many people and contributions were left out. Especially in the fields of medicine and science. It was as if Dr. Charles Drew, Dr. Ben Carson, Benjamin Banniker, Eli Whitney and George W. Carver did not exist. We could have done better taking our children to the library. We didn't pay for the audio tour guides, and it was a good thing we didn't. People around us were having problems getting them to work properly. An audio loop for each room would have been better. Oh and by the way, WHY CAN'T YOU TAKE PICTURES!

America I Am was an awesome journey

by Medi on 9/6/09Atlanta Civic Center - Atlanta

The America I Am project allowed us to journey into the fascinating and uniquely chronicled history of African Americans in America through the lens of historical artifacts. From the simulated slave dungeon to the evening gown of Mavis Staples, one could tangibly sense the spiritual, cultural, economic, and socio-political contribution made by those of African descent to the founding, construction, and building of America. Although the attendees were largely of African descent, this is a project that should not be missed by any American.

    America I Am: A hit

by GenieD on 9/5/09Atlanta Civic Center - Atlanta

The America I Am exhibit currently at the Atlanta Civic Center contains quite an impressive collection of historical artifacts. From slavery to Obama as President this show covers it all. The most intense parts involve the descriptions and artifacts of the slave trade from Africa to the US and on through life as freed people. There is a rare signed copy of the 13th Ammendement , various writings and clothing samples from Frederick Douglass and other names we've learned from history. For anyone interested in ANY sort of history, this show will satisfy. The only flaws I found were: The lighting while mood fulfilling was way too dark and not senior citizen friendly at all. The font used on the descriptive cards near the artifacts was too small for me, children and seniors. The show lacked any depth where visual arts/performing were concerned. Glaring exclusions: Dance companies: No shoes of Arthur Mitchell, no Alvin Ailey? Judith Jamison ?Only Gregory Hines signed tap shoes.( a treat) Where were Romare Bearden and Jacob Lawrence, Jonathan Green?

by AKAcutie on 9/3/09Atlanta Civic Center - Atlanta

I really enjoyed it and so did my kids ages 11, 8, 5. If they like history, they will be interested and engaged. It really shows our kids our history. I really enjoyed the short documentary that you could sit and watch.

    Emotional

by Bug417 on 9/3/09Atlanta Civic Center - Atlanta

This exhibit is beyond words. I cannot express my gratitude to Mr. Tavis Smiley for trying to open up the minds and educate all of us about where we come from, where we've been and where we are today. There we times during the tour that I felt myself swelling with so much pride it felt like fire inside but only came out as rain drops of tears of joy. This display of a proud heritage will never be forgotten, always treasured and forever admired. "I'm Free at last Free at last. thank God Almighty I'm Free at last." WARNING: This exhibit is a great family outting but please take heed young children between the ages of 1 to 8 might lose interest very fast. A LOT of reading required.

    America I Am was remarkable!!

by JazzPlayer on 8/31/09Atlanta Civic Center - Atlanta

This event needs to be seen by all. I think the only thing that needed to be changed was the ending. President Obame should have been featured before the final presentation because this is where we are now and I think that is what all those people before us seemed to be saying. That would have been a kick in that Door of no return!

America I Am is a MUST SEE!!!

by CMiller on 8/31/09Atlanta Civic Center - Atlanta

This exhibit evokes many emotions and ends with a flourish instilling hope and throughout a feeling of pride at the accomplishments despite overwhelming hardships and ostacles including the threat of death. For a number of us there are numerous points of information which needs to be know so that further gains can be made. One cannot progress without knowlegde of our history.

    America I Am

by stella13 on 8/31/09Atlanta Civic Center - Atlanta

Very moving, impressive scope of material. I thoroughly enjoyed the exhibit itself, although I don't think it was the best use of space, given the bottlenecks at some of the transitions. Moreover, the organization was very poor. My friend and I waited for more than an hour, even though we bought tickets in advance. Having tickets for a specific time would have been better as far as our time.

    Something worth seeing!!!

by MsDix216 on 8/31/09Atlanta Civic Center - Atlanta

While I truly enjoyed the exhibit, I would much rather had paid the additional fee up front and experienced naration as you walked up to each exhibits. Due to the large crowd and varying reading speed of the guests, it may be something you look at adding to your next venture. I was also diappointed that I could not take pictures for my own family album. I hope pictures will be made available for the public. Other than that, I think it was truly worth seeing and i believe everyone should take the opportunity to see this before it leaves.

THIS WAS ONE OF THE NICEST AND MOST INSPIRING EXHIBITS I HAVE SEEN. I ENJOYED HOW IT TOLD THE HISTORY FROM THE START TO NOW WITH DIGNITY AND TRUTH, THREE THUMBS UP.

    The African American Imprint

by mays on 8/25/09Atlanta Civic Center - Atlanta

I loved the exhibit and what it represented for the African American culture. It made me appreciate my culture more, and allowed me to not complain about everything in my life. People have died so that I had the right to vote, to sit where I want to sit, to work as a woman and to one day send my children to any school of my choosing. I think that every person of color needs this moment of refreshment, to understand where they come from and where they are going.

    Incredible and Unforgettable

by Malroberts on 8/23/09Atlanta Civic Center - Atlanta

The America I Am Imprint was one of the best cultural experiences of my life. Our history is so misrepresented. What a phenomenal job Tavis has done with capturing the true essence of our contribution to the world. I am so blessed to be a descendant of the Slave Trade. I am here because someone did not quit and looked beyond their immediate circumstances to their legacy. Eventhough, they had no idea what would come of their descendants they had a great faith in God and that great faith undoubtedly assured them that we would survive. I walked away with a sense a pride as well as a feeling of shame that I have not accomplished more with the much that I have today. I am proud. I am inspired. I am changed.
