"America I Am" was truly amazing!

by Zipphorah on 7/25/09Atlanta Civic Center - Atlanta

This experience is one I will never forget. To have so much history in one place was a feat that took years of planning and hard work. My plans are to go back again and again and to take as many people with me to enjoy and be a part of this experience. When I first heard the name of the exhibit, "America I Am", I didn't get it. But after seeing all the contributions we have made as a people to shape, mold and build this nation I can stand proudly and proclaim " I AM AMERICA". not Black America, but AMERICA!!!!

    America I Am was Amazing

by Jman09 on 7/24/09Atlanta Civic Center - Atlanta

I recommend America I Am to anyone. The content and the professionalism was top notch. I was most pleased to see the number of parents there with their children using this as the perfect opportunity to educate them and answer those hard questions in a natural comfortable way; it was a real teachable moment. Best of all, the children were just as interested as the adults. My wish is that we could get more people to see it, especially Black students, and all non-black people in the area of the exhibit. It was good for all.

America I AM is highly recommended for the Family

by DJSimmons409876 on 7/21/09Atlanta Civic Center - Atlanta

While the exhibit proved to be something that comes along once in a blue moon, I would recommend going to see it during off hours/days. We went ont he weekend since we have small children and tha proved to be a mistake. It was difficult to explain to them as well as the lines that formed caused us to move very slow. The contents were extraordinary but I wouldn't recommend for the younger family members because of the length of time to explore the enitre exhibit.

    America I Am

by Lelay on 7/19/09Atlanta Civic Center - Atlanta

I saw the exhibit with my 9 year old son and my husband. I am glad I saw the exhibit, it is well overdue. A lot of the items I have certainly read about or saw on television, but it was heartfelt to actually see them in real life. My hope is that all Americans no matter the race or ethnicity to see this exhibit because this is not only those of African discent history, but this is America's history. This country was built on the labor of slavery. We have come a long ways, but as a country if we could acknowlegde our wrongs moving forward would be much simpler. Thank You

    Imaprinted on America

by JULwork on 7/17/09Atlanta Civic Center - Atlanta

America I AM is an amazing exhibit. It tugs at your heartstrings and opens the mind of the viewer. From the bowels of the slave ships to the power of the civil rights movement, you won't forget the trials, tribulations, and joys experienced throughout history. This is a very powerful exhibition and greatly impacted my 7-year-old daughter. The first half is dedicated to the slave trade and can tend to be a bit overwhelming for the younger generation. My mother-in-law was most greatly moved my the segregation section and said it hit really close to home. You will start out in tears and end with a joyous feeling. Highly recommended.

    A Must-See For Every Race

by KatieS on 7/16/09Atlanta Civic Center - Atlanta

Going to this event really helped me to learn about how much African American people have contributed not only to the foundation of America but to popular culture altogether. Africa has produced some of the hardest workers and leaders throughout the American diaspora. If your not Black this is especially good to see because if really helped me to better understand the black race in itself.

    I'm the African American Imprint!

by HollisA1 on 7/16/09Atlanta Civic Center - Atlanta

We Never would have made it!.... (I'm referring to AMERICA) Without the strength and unbreakable spirit of those AFRICANS AND AFRICAN AMERICANS who came before us. Their Blood, Sweat, Tears, and Lives enabled this country to become a Super Power. Let's NEVER forget them! Lovelife!

    AMERICAIAM

by bski on 7/15/09Atlanta Civic Center - Atlanta

THE AFRICAN AMERICAN IMPRINT displaced historical artifacts that shaped the American history. Begin with African slaves forced to the country in shackles and then through the years with hard work and education placed the first African American in the white house holding the most powerful position in this country.

    Bring the Kids!

by VKCAMHistory on 7/9/09Atlanta Civic Center - Atlanta

I shudder to think of how future generations would remember (or forget) African Americans and their incredible contributions had people like Tavis Smiley not taken the time to preserve and share it. The exhibit is a great way to make history come to life and have meaning for your children. Take them and walk them around and explain that all that they have heard and read about is not just good storytelling, but really real.
