About

John Newton (Tony Award® nominee Josh Young), a willful and musically talented young Englishman, faces a future as uncertain as the turning tide. Coming of age as Britain sits atop an international empire of slavery, he finds himself torn between following in the footsteps of his father – a slave trader – or embracing the more compassionate views of his childhood sweetheart (Erin Mackey). Accompanied by his slave, Thomas (Tony Award® winner Chuck Cooper), John embarks on a perilous voyage on the high seas. When that journey finds John in his darkest hour, a transformative moment of self-reckoning inspires a blazing anthem of hope that will finally guide him home.

Brimming with emotion and adventure, AMAZING GRACE is an unforgettable musical saga that captures the spirit of history’s sweetest and most powerful sound: freedom.

    My Goodness Gracious

by GraceBeToYou on 7/22/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

Amazing Grace was phenomenal. Josh Young did a superb job as John Newton and Erin Mackey's voice was magnificent as she portrayed an abolitionist and Newton's voice of reason. The music lyrics and dialogue worked seamlessly to portray the redemptive story of Newton's life. The two and half hours was a rollercoaster of emotions reaching its apex at Newton's father's death and culminating in a prodigal son returning back to his native England to mourn the loss of his father, rejoin his lovely Erin, and dedicate his life to ending slavery. Amazing Grace is simply amazingly beautiful.

    Very moving

by Potpie1 on 7/21/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

When I heard about this musical on Seattle radio, I ordered tickets immediately and booked my flight to New York. I also downloaded John Newton's biography and am half way through his life story. What an AMAZING story. I was in tears many times during the performance. It brings the most popular hymn "AMAZING GRACE" to life. All the performers were fantastic with crystal clear voices & intonation was right on key. I hope this becomes a movie. My applause to everyone - especially the writer of this magnificent musical !

    Amazing Grace not quite amazing

by DJSings on 7/21/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

Saw this show on the final day of previews before their opening. It is a visually beautiful production with decent music and fantastic voices. However, the plot is choppy, slow and sometimes confusing and the acting, especially of the lead, Josh Young, was lacking. The singing of the title song as the show's finale was the highlight. The effects utilized at the end of Act I were beautiful and garnered many gasps and applause, however, this same effect was used in Disney's stage production of Tarzan. I liked this show ... but I didn't love it.

    Powerful!

by Idseeitagain on 7/20/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

Where to start?? Soaring songs from strong voices, seamless scene changes (LOTS of them), stunning wardrobes, characters who pull us into their world. John Newton is not the only one who is transformed in this play. Those of us with experience in AA & Al-Anon recognize the pattern. Only when we are face-to-face with the truth of our own part in all the disasters of our past, are we able to ask for help to change. And when we begin to make amends as best we can, we find freedom to live free of the shame and guilt. As witnesses of John Newton's painful awakening and release, we come away sensing that if the wretched person HE was can be transformed into a force for good, then maybe there are chances for us, too.

    Bravo!!

by jazwood54 on 7/20/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

The show was a powerfully moving tale of redemption and grace. Great music with thoughtful and nuanced character development. It's not easy to portray the lives of enslaved people in the context of an entertainment vehicle, but I applaud the production's dignified and appropriately sensitive approach.

Amazing Grace is a life changing experience.

by Theatrelover50 on 7/19/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

Everyone should should run to see this brilliant piece of living art! You will be incredibly moved. I have seen the show several times and each time the audience has unanimously lept to their feet at the end for extended ovations. The timeliness of this show and issues of race/slavery make it incredibly relevant. The music is phenomenal and talented cast is electric. I can't recommend it enough. Go to this show and take everyone you know.

    SEE IT♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡

by krob999ny on 7/19/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

Relevant. Soul-Stirring. Beautifully sung and acted. There is so much I want to say about this. It is a love story with a happy ending. It chronicles the conflict between a father and his son with love triumphant. It is an adventure story with the characters facing disaster but surviving. It has actors totally immersed in their roles. I have been e-mailing all of my friends throughout the country and overseas to see this when they come to NYC. You will be treating yourself to a great afternoon and/or evening when you see Amazing Grace. I will be seeing it for the third time today.

    Amazing is pretty good

by xando on 7/18/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

This is a compelling story deeply felt by a number of the actors. Singing was glorious but white actors were pedestrian and not particularly animated. While singing they often just stood around very still. Black actors were great, particularly Chuck Cooper, Harriett D. Foy and Laiona Michelle. The conversion experiences of the white actors happened fast and without much fervor. Dialogue was OK....I didn't mind the 'history lesson' criticized by the NY Times. The second act was much better than the first act.

I truly enjoyed the show. The staging is magnificent. The cast works very hard. The audience was up on its feet and remained so during the singing of Amazing Grace. I recommend the show.

    An important musical

by dennisbloh on 7/18/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

The story told by the incredible musical Amazing Grace is one important to the issues of today. It is a story of redemption, but its greatest message is that redemption doesn't come right away. It is a process, but if enough people believe in you then it can happen. In today's society we want immediate transformation. Amazing Grace shows that our efforts may not pay dividends right away, but the dividends can be big.

    it's amazing!!!!!!!

by brooklyntime on 7/18/15Nederlander Theatre - New York

Amazing Grace is an amazing musical. It graces Broadway with style, class, humor, and great songs. Josh Young is magnificent. His voice, range, talent, looks. He is enough of a reason to see this play. Though a love story, it is the courage, the fortitude, the humanity of the slaves that shines, that their right to freedom. The actors who played these roles, their talent, their love of theater, their strength, is what gives this musical it's soul. Go see Amazing Grace, you'll love it.
