Provocative, irreverent, controversial and wildly creative, Amanda Palmer is a fearless singer, songwriter, playwright, blogger and an audaciously expressive pianist who simultaneously embraces – and explodes – traditional frameworks of music, theater and art.
Amanda first came to prominence as one half of the internationally acclaimed punk cabaret duo The Dresden Dolls. In 2008, she released her debut solo album, Who Killed Amanda Palmer, produced by Ben Folds and accompanied by a fine art photography book featuring text by esteemed author Neil Gaiman (who Palmer has since married). After parting ways with her record label in 2010, she self-released two EPs: Amanda Palmer Performs The Popular Hits of Radiohead On Her Magical Ukelele and Amanda Palmer Goes Down Under, along with a musical theater-esque Evelyn Evelyn album and tour with Jason Webley.
Amanda is widely known as “The Social Media Queen of Rock-N-Roll” for her constant and disarmingly intimate engagement with her fans via her blog, Tumblr, and Twitter (800,000+ followers), and has been at the vanguard of using both “direct to fan” and “pay what you want” (patronage) business models to build and run her business. In May of 2012 she made international news when she raised nearly $1.2 million pre-selling her new album, Theatre is Evil, along with related merchandise and “experiences” via Kickstarter. Theatre is Evil went on to debut in the “Billboard Top 10” when it was released on Sept. 11, 2012, and has been released in over 20 countries on her own label, 8ft records.
Amanda was invited to present a “TED Talk” at TED’s 2013 Conference. To date her Talk, “The Art of Asking”, has been viewed more than 8 million times worldwide. 2013 also saw the release of “An Evening with Neil Gaiman & Amanda Palmer”- a 3 CD collection of tracks culled from a live tour with her husband and best-selling author Neil Gaiman.
Following upon the success of her TED Talk- Amanda expanded her philosophy into a book. The Art of Asking was released worldwide in November of 2014 and became a New York Times Best Seller. In support of the book, Amanda is currently touring solo for the first time since 2011, hitting stages with a mix of rocking keyboard originals, ukulele ballads, and readings from The Art of Asking.
I cried so many times, in the best way possible, I love Amanda
I've loved her music solo and as part of The Dresden Dolls since around 2006/2007. She has an overwhelming amount of talent and kindness. She really takes the time to open up, listen, and appreciate her fans on and off stage. What a talented, unique, and amazing person.
Amanda Palmer gave her fans the best of all of the best concerts I've seen her give. She makes a large hall feel like an intimate living room and, for 4 hours, shares deeply personal stories about her life so that you feel her love and need for you as much as you feel you need her at that moment. Through music and word, she makes you feel normal, even though we all know there's no such thing.
Amanda brings her own music to life, and shares the ups and downs of her life as a performer, as a woman, and as a person. It is well worth the investment, about a third of the audience cried and there were several standing ovations.
I laughed, I cried, I reflected on my life, and I did it all while listening to Amanda’s beautiful words and songs. A magical night with a performer like no other.
One of the things I love about Amanda is that she is only ever fully herself. There's no mask or fakeness. She puts her whole self into everything she does imperfections and all. This show was raw, emotional, and fully charged. People cried, they laughed, they sang, and they loved their neighbors. I've never experienced anything that really brought people together like Amanda did. She really broke down our barriers and made us feel like a tribe.
AFP is a force in song, in storytelling and in entertaining her audience. She gave a full performance, including ways to interact with the audience. Her voice is beautiful and her ability to play the instruments is awesome. She goes further and tells stories about empathy, compassion and talks about difficult subjects. She gets you thinking ... we left this show filled with the joy from music, but also thinking more deeply about issues.
I think people are either going to love or hate this show. Nearly four hours long (yes, four - she hit the stage almost promptly at 7:30pm and, save a fifteen-minute intermission, didn't leave the stage until after 11pm), the show was primarily spent sharing personal experiences peppered with songs. If you're an avid fan, then it was probably an amazing evening. If you are a casual fan, then you might have been squirming in your seat. A positive review would emphasize her bravery in undertaking a show where she revealed some very personal information and did some wonderful renditions of not only her own work, but some surprisingly effective Disney movie tunes! A negative review might call it self-indulgent and bloated, only appealing to a small clique of people, and primarily an infomercial to promote her crowd-sourcing platform. Also, some of her fans continue to be insufferable, from the young woman who felt it necessary to be verbally abusive to the venue staff for no apparent reason other than to spread her own misery, to the audience members who wanted to have a personal conversation with the artist on stage. Thankfully, there were enough positive vibes to prevent these incidents from ruining the evening for everyone else, and the show was well worth the price of admission.
To give you an idea how much I loved this show, I've now bought a ticket for the same tour in Nashville TN after seeing this performance. As Amanda Palmer will tell you multiple times during the show, this show is weird. It's weird in a beautifully messy and emotionally charged way. You will cry at least twice, but you'll also laugh and maybe you'll even understand the power of radical compassion and love.
I was warned ahead that this would be a show with heavy subject matter, pulled from the Artist's own life. And indeed, it was a transformative experience... Reaching into your heart and cracking it, only to show you how to grow the pieces back together.
This show was like nothing else. Amanda shared her life and her heart with us and also played her gorgeous music. It was epic!
The show was very intimate. There was so much to take in, and the crowd response was fantastic. Amanda Palmer delivered an amazing performance, with very personal experiences shared between songs. I will definitely see her in concert every chance i get.
The last time I was able to see Amanda Palmer my friends and I had to drive all the way to Georgia so I was ecstatic to see that she was going to perform an hour away from where I live! I have to say, everyone performed amazingly and it seemed like both the audience and everyone on stage was having fun! The string quartet was wonderful, and Jherek Bischoff did a wonderful performance. Unfortunately, they was two hours late to start, and we had to leave early as a result. It was a shame that we couldn't stay until the end, but go and see Amanda Palmer when you get a chance.
Absolutely incredible, one of the best shows I have ever been to
I love Amanda Palmer's music but had never been to one of her shows so I had no idea what to expect. I was highly impressed and loved the fact that she was very personable on stage. I cried and laughed. I loved the show and will see her again when she is on tour near me.
Amanda was incredible! First time I've seen her perform live, but it definitely won't be the last. PWR BTTM and Lady Moon were also amazing!
The Bearsville Theatre is a great venue when you want to have an intimate evening with you favorite rock star and her Fine friends! First up, Lady Moon & the Eclipse. Soulful Fun! Check them out on YouTube, local from Hudson,by Amanda tossing flowers out into the crowd (& a Carrot!) Next, PWR BTTM, How 2 guys make that much music is a Wonder. Fine musicians both and I learned more about Glory Holes then I needed to. Amanda was great, playing a mix of her standards and talking to the crowd. Very Pregnant! Her last song was, I think reflective of her life I happened to meet her husband, Author Neil Gaiman then and wished them well. It was dead to see how devoted he was! If you want to know what I'm talking about, just search YouTube for videos of All of them. Amanda, if you actually read this: Good Luck and I look forward to hearing what your doing on Patronium
I've seen hundreds of shows, if not thousands over the years. Everything from local bands to national acts and from traditional country to punk rock. This is easily one of the most intimate and best shows I've ever attended. If this show comes within 200 miles of you, I highly recommend that you attend. Wish I had a recording of this amazing performance.
Never fails to entertain! Beautiful show! Great to see her again and with a little baby in her belly!! :-)
I've always been a fan of The Dresden Dolls as well as her solo material. She's a genius artist and I am so happy that I got the chance to see her. Seeing her perform songs on piano and ukulele is something I will never forget. Having her talk to the audience is something I will also never forget. We also got the pleasure of witnessing a couple get engaged right there. It was truly a magnificent night. Getting to meet her afterward was just the icing on the cake. I got to give her a drawing and tell her that I love her. I got her autograph and my night was made. The only thing that would've been better would have been if I would have been able to get a picture with her.
