Best Nutcracker I ever saw
by Maggie on 12/23/24BJCC Concert Hall - BirminghamRating: 5 out of 5I have seen many versions of The Nutcracker in my 77 years. Many have been professional, many local dance schools productions. This production had the most children dancing I have seen, yet they all danced well. There were none of the "cute"times when a small dancer danced too fast or too slow or jumped around in excitement. In particular, the Nutcracker was a young boy maybe an inch shorter than Marie. His work during the battle with the mice and again when he was telling of the battle to the Sugar Plum Fairy was beyond what I would expect from such a youngster. We will see more of him, I hope. And in the context of the story it worked, as he was suitable to be a friend and admirer of Marie better than any young man would.
I would also like to mention the Snowflakes, who fluttered here and there as if driven by the wind. My SIL remarked how she liked seeing ballet doing so much on their toes. The Sugar Plum Fairy and consort did a fabulous pas de deux. All of the different candies were great, each one better than the last. Mother Ginger and her children were great, she flirting all around while they "played"in time to the music. For one of the few times in recent years, I was sorry the show ended so soon.
In the first act, during the party at the Stahlbaum home I was impressed at how natural everyone was. People moved around, talked to each other, smiled while waltzing, drank champagne and had a good time. The children stole the show sometimes, but by the excellence of their dancing and acting.
In conclusion, I recommend you attend any ballet that the Alabama Ballet presents. I drove six hour to see this production and felt it worth it.
