    Rare Musical Instruments

by mlfwoj on 10/20/11The Regency Ballroom - San Francisco

I enjoyed Stick Men's set the most, though the whole show was fabulously organized by Robert Fripp's sister. After their set, Tony, Pat and Marcus came out to talk to folks and sign stuff. It was great to hear about the Chatman stick and Marcus' invention, the Touch Guitar. They covered Breathless and he sounded just like Robert. Belew was amazing too. Love how his guitar can sound just like a piano. He had an amazing crew of young talent: Julie Slick on bass and Tobias Ralph on drums. The hour long Crimson encore rocked. I especially loved the cut from "Red" At the end of the show everyone came out to talk and sign stuff. Very cool!

    None more better

    by trebleclefequalsMc2 on 10/16/11Aladdin Theater - Portland

I've been to a lot of shows in 40 years, and this is the best gig I've ever seen, seriously, and hands down. And I'm not some band stalker etc. with a bias opinion (although I AM a musician). This was the pennacle of my concert career.

Adrian Belew Power Trio were spectacular!

by JohnnyTisRUSHED on 10/16/11Aladdin Theater - Portland

Having Tony Levin and Pat M. from their own power trio made it that much more unbelievable!!! A concert such as this can be considered like having a fine microbrew in the World of soda!

    Mind-Melting

    by heetman2001 on 10/7/11Tralf - Buffalo

I knew going in that it was going to be the show of the year and I was not disappointed. All who graced the stage played with passion and virtuosity of their respective instruments that left most everyone slack jawed with awe. Adrian is always a treat and I can't wait for the next show he does here. Thanks to all of you for a night I will always remember. Fantastic!!!

    good energy

by nerven on 10/3/11Royale Boston - Boston

Stick men was enjoyable. I liked the song about the soupercollider. Adrian brought the good energy. It was cool to see the new talent in his trio. I enjoyed the king crimson set as well. Great show and an inspriation to see these guys still rocking it at their age! Interesting crowd...

    Yo Adrian

by whambarman on 10/2/11Royale Boston - Boston

It was great to see the Whammy Bar King again. Adrian, Tony and Pat were great as well as the new players. Seeing them reminded me how much I like being in their presence. They're the only ones that do what they do.

    Belew/Levin obscured by poor sound

    by underwhelmed99 on 10/2/11Royale Boston - Boston

The Belew/Levin concert at Boston's Royale on Tuesday, Sept 27th was a big disappointment due to extremely poor sound engineering. We had excellent 4th row seats for Levin's Stickmen, but the volume was so loud that we decided to move to the back of the balcony for Belew. Even with the volume problems, the mix was very poor in that we couldn't hear what Levin was playing due to the interference from the other stick player and drums. Instead of a subtle layering of sound it was more like a contest to see who could be on the top of the sound stack. Belew from the balcony was more tolerable, but his vocals were barely intelligiable and the bass was lost in the low end rumble. In contrast, we went to the Saturday Steely Dan show at the Wang and the sound was perfect with each of the 13 players able to be heard, not just for their leads or solos, but for each background or supporting part as well. I realize we're talking about two entirely different venues with their unique sound characteristics, but I don't think the sound guys at the Belew concert were even trying.

Had ticket for the rehearsal/meet and greet before the show. Got a chance to meet Mr. Belew and Mr. Levin, absolutely great guys! The show itself...Awesome! Seeing both trio's perform and then for them to come together at the end for a set of mostly Crimson tunes...wow! Definitely showing that they still have "it"! This was the first show of their tour and I expect that it will only get better from here!

No Holds Barred at the Variety Playhouse

    by Bassman445 on 9/21/11Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

Being a big King Crimson fan. I was sure I was in for something very special , when I went to this show . I was not disappointed in any way . I got there early , for the meet and greet , and was pleased with how friendly and approachable Adrian , Tony and Pat were . Got Tony to sign my Bass Guitar ,( WOW , What a Treat ) Talked a little with Adrian and Pat . Real down to Earth People . Tony's band opened the night . Was not familiar with anything they played , but , Wow what a great set . Tony was his usual awesome self . What more can I say about the best Bass Player on the planet . Adrian's band took the stage next , and was just as awesome . Again , not familiar with what they played , but , they really rocked the house . Adrian truely is the Twang Bar King .His female Bass player really knew what she was doing . As for his drummer , I'm still in shock how smokin' hot he was . Then Adrian , Tony and Pat jammed on som King Crimson , which I know all to well . After three King tunes , the rest of the musicians came on stage and played about 8 more Crimson tunes . Tony's Guitar player , ( a Man I think Tony said he is Norwegean ) played a Guitar he designed . An 8 string touch guitar . Very Fripp like sounds from him . I have been to many concerts . This one is in my top five best . WOW

    Absolutely incredible.

    by Kmfish1 on 9/21/11Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

Absolutely fantastic show; followed by both bands playing together about 45 minutes worth of King Crimson. Don't miss it!

Amazing amount of talent on one stage

by abovenyquist on 9/21/11Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

Alas, I had to miss the Stick Men, who were the opening act - so I was thrilled when they came out and joined the Adrian Belew Power Trio to form a double-trio. Of course, the Power Trio were amazing on their own, but adding the Stick Men brought it up to a new level.

Fantastic show. Got more and more amped up as it progressed finishing with the King Crimson set that brought the house down. Going to try to catch them again on this tour.

    Two of a Perfect Trio

by Sideygirl on 9/21/11Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

If you love Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, Pat Mastelotto and King Crimson, don't miss this. The soundcheck was well worth the price of the meet and greet tickets.

Great to see a band enjoying themselves onstage

    by Pickles47985 on 9/21/11Variety Playhouse - Atlanta

I've become an Adrian Belew fan the last couple years, as I got more familiar with King Crimson's later stuff. I try to never go into a show with any expectations, but the opportunity to see 3/4 of King Crimson together, up close was simply unreal. Belew's voice is amazing, and moreso considering how long he's been at this. Everybody on stage was not only playing spectacular music, but the fact that they were enjoying themselves up there was just infectious among the crowd too. Good crowd as well- no fights, no crazy drunks, just a bunch of nerds that appreciate good music.

    Weird and wonderful

by neuromon on 6/30/10Narrows Center for the Arts - Fall River

Wild electric soundscapes filled the Narrows on a hot autumn night as Adrian Belew brought his Power Trio to this small venue. The seating is formed by old church pews surrounding a small stage, which Belew's frantic noises turned into an altar of unorthodox musical spirit. Opening the show with Big Electric Cat, his guitar howled and screeched like the title's feline, while still maintaining the driving beat and complimeting the funky lyrical meter. Belew is a wizard of synthesized guitar effects, making his instrument croak and squeal like animals, insects and machines. Yet he displays masterful control over the acoustic menagerie, using the sounds to paint colors around and through the songs without overwhelming them. His trio is made of brother and sister Eric and Julie Slick on drums and bass. Both display instrumental competence but primarily serve to provide a featureless musical canvas onto which Belew can splash his imagination. Indeed, rather than sitting in the middle of the stage facing the audience, Eric's drum kit is set to one side, facing towards Belew. This keeps the focus visually as well as musically on the ringleader of the sonic circus. Julie serves the same purpose from the other side of the stage, her bass well down in the mix and her technique muted and frankly uninspired. Belew has played with bassists Tony Levin and Les Claypool, among others, so he clearly did not want someone of equal caliber on this outing challenging his instrumental supremacy. He played most of the numbers off his latest CD, "e", and patient King Crimson fans were rewarded with a romping version of Elephant Talk and the elegant fan favorite, Three of a Perfect Pair. By the end of the night, the sweltering air and swirling guitar left everyone sweating, woozy and smiling.

Great intimate show with the sonic scientist

    by Moxie1000 on 4/27/10The Basement - Columbus

Just Adrian, his guitar, and his electronic toys, with many stories and Q&A. Nice guy, very approachable and the small venue was perfect. Hung out afterwards at chatted with everyone. Very cool music. Played almost all new work, but no one seemed the least disappointed. Went thru a hundred different tones and sounds throughout. If you just like melody and chord progressions, maybe not your cup o tea. If you like sounds and odd music and being surprised at musical directions, catch him in yer city.

Adrian Belew Trio Is Not To Be Missed

by Michelangelo on 11/4/09Aladdin Theater - Portland

I loved this concert. It's the third time I've seen this trio and they are wonderful with a capital W. Adrian is so amazing in so many ways and the Slick siblings are such great players. How can 3 people have so much fun and at the same time perform amazing musical feats? The venue if of course very good. Yes... the volume got a bit out of hand. Not sure how it is that with so much equipment (we're talking thousands of dollars worth of state of the art gear here) being run but a professional (sound man) can sound so much like like a loud mushy blur by the end of the evening. Yes, I love loud rock 'n' roll music but must it be made indistinguishable? I just don't get it. I seldom hear good sound in a club in Portland. I think it's time for these Portland sound guys to go back to school or perhaps maybe to just GO to school in the first place. All the time, practice and money it takes to get a professional musician onstage in Portland and to get such a poor quality sound. It's the classic case of "emporer with no clothes". Everyone seems to accept it as the status quo. I think you sound techs can do better. In any event... I LOVE Adrian and all that he does. This trio is especially... special.

    Adrian was great!

by Tatala on 10/22/09Galaxy Theatre - Santa Ana

As always, Adrian Belew put on a great show. He performed a lot of new instrumental music from his latest album E, as well as some old favorites, like BIG ELECTRIC CAT, YOUNG LIONS and OF BOW AND DRUM. There were also some surprises, including a version of King Crimson's NEUROTICA and FUTURERVISION from the HERE album. Belew is truly an unappreciated artist. He's one of the great guitarists out there, and a wonderful performer who always exudes a tremendous amount of joy in his playing. I was also impressed by Eric Slick, the drummer, who was tremendous. I've seen Belew many times through the years. He always puts on a wonderful show. Highly recommended.

    immaculate perfection

by cyrusghahremani on 10/14/09Aladdin Theater - Portland

if you are reading this, you are going to see him live at your soonest opportunity. i just decided for you. and if you play drums, guitar, bass, or consider yourself a singer, you will be running home afterwards to practice until sunrise (or spend that time crying at your inabilities). it's not just that adrian (and the mighty eric+julie slick) are top notch musicians - and not just that the tunes they spent the night playing are great - but there is a familial connection here that cannot be matched. it was a downright fun event to be at, and every single person in attendance left the building elated.
