ABC IN CONCERT:

British new wave sensation ABC rose to fame in the early '80s thanks to their sophisticated pop sound and the splashy, stylish showmanship of lead singer Martin Fry. Three decades later Fry is as dapper and confident as ever at the band's live shows, crooning classic ABC hits like "The Look of Love" and "All My Heart" as if not a day had passed. From his charming accent and tailored suits to his perfectly preserved pipes, Fry remains a consummate performer, exuding the energy and charisma of a performer at the top of his game. Whether he's shooting that "Poison Arrow" straight to fans' hearts or warning that "Vanity Kills", Fry's passionate voice and upbeat stage presence always gets ticket buyers singing and dancing along on ABC's must-see tours.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

ABC formed in Sheffield, UK in the late '70s with Fry initially acting as the band's synth player. By 1980 he had become lead singer, and in 1981 ABC scored their first hit with the UK Top 20 single "Tears Are Not Enough". Their rise continued in 1982 with their debut album The Lexicon of Love, which topped the UK Albums Chart and scored a No. 1 dance hit in the US with "The Look of Love". Their chart success waned in the mid-'80s, but by 1987 ABC was back on top with their fourth album Alphabet City, which spawned the US dance chart No. 1 "When Smokey Sings". Though the band's lineup has evolved over the years, Fry has remained a constant, releasing albums and touring throughout the '90s and '00s. In 2008 he released ABC's eighth album Traffic, a stellar slice of '80s-inspired pop that critics hailed as a return to form. Since then he's continued to treat fans around the world to his signature debonair performances.

    Wang Chung really was amazing!

by CoffeeJunkie on 7/13/09M Resort Spa Casino - Henderson

Overall, I liked the stage and setup. I was concerned about being outside, but it wasn't too hot once the sun went down. I was confused as to why the girl from Missing Persons was so upset on stage. It was kinda distracting. Cutting Crew was really awesome! Wang Chung really got everyone on their feet. And ABC really had an amazing and talented band! So glad that my hubby and I went!

    Regeneration regenerates me!

by ElaineQ on 7/12/09M Resort Spa Casino - Henderson

A concert I will remember. Diehard fan of Cutting Crew and ABC. Worth every penny for the concert tix, plane tix, hotel, cab fare and time to see them. A great line-up of them plus Missing Persons and Wang Chung. Wang Chung were especially impressive live. They were funny, sounded great just like their recording and so grateful to their fans. Cutting Crew and ABC, too. The audience and I danced from one hit song to another, stopping only to catch our breath between sets. Except for Missing Persons, all the acts took the time to play their hits or new songs, no rushing through the sets and saying goodnight. It was the M Resort's first concert production and with the great ambience set against the Las Vegas desert sky and the poolside cool, they came out winning, pleasing the 2-3 thousand fans there. Nick Van Eed looked as gorgeous as ever, oozing with charm and flirtation. Back in love with him! He hung around the stage after his set, which was after Missing Persons, then Wang Chung was third and to cap the night off, ABC's Martin Fry in his trademark skinny tie and dark shiny suit, uber-cool as ever. An added bonus, he played longer than most and dance hit after dance hit. I was loving every moment. I wanted to remember this evening so much, I hoped a souvenir would make up for the pictures I didn't take because I was told by staff that cameras were not allowed, but lo and behold, everyone else was snapping away. So that was the only downside of my evening, I hope someone will be kind enough to post the concert pics. Please! And I hope Cutting Crew and ABC tour again as part of the Regeneration Tour!

ABC ruled the show but all were great!!

by shrug on 7/12/09M Resort Spa Casino - Henderson

we loved the show the bands were great , a good mix of old and new. Cutting crew was better than ever and ABC went last and really went out big. The pool atmosphere at the M Resort was fantastic ! you could sit in your assigned seat or go lounge by the pool and still enjoy the concert. The first concert I have ever enjoyed from a lounge chair..I guess I am getting old but it was fun...

by JWise on 7/12/09Gibson Amphitheatre at Universal CityWalk - Universal City

Was an amazing concert and my mother seemed to enjoy all the old school 80's bands as did I growing up in the 80's it took me back to the days. Everyone was dancing and singing along the the lights blazing everywhere. Not to mention Richard Blade came out now thats old school right there.

For being past their prime, they were all great!

by Reggie44 on 7/12/09M Resort Spa Casino - Henderson

ABC closed with a thunderous set. The show in itself was worth every penny. All four bands played music that was familiar to the average 80's throwback. They all sounded great.

Cutting Crew was as good as ever!

by Shangel on 7/12/09M Resort Spa Casino - Henderson

Missing Persons was still fun but the blonde wig was a little much and her voice was scratchy. Wang Chung had the crowd on their feet with Wang Chung tonight, sounded great. ABC had the trademark suits, the band was in great shape, vocally as terrific as ever, ending with When Smokey Sings, which had the crowd singing, they were the ending group but my favorite was Cutting Crew. Between the funny stories, the fact they are still putting out new music, sang a couple of numbers from the new album, have the wonderful irish brogue, in great shape as ever & ended with my favorite I just died in your arms tonight, they had the whole audience in love. We were in the 2nd row to the left, the speakers were too much, the drums echoed right in our faces, the seats were card chairs & tied together so we were all squished together.

    I miss the 80's!

by kiwilv on 7/12/09M Resort Spa Casino - Henderson

Although Missing Persons made themselves look like a bunch of crybabies, and Cutting Crew had to do the shameless plug of their new CD, the show was a whole lotta fun. ABC was AWESOME

    Berlin is overrated

by jerrytodd on 7/12/09Gibson Amphitheatre at Universal CityWalk - Universal City

Cutting Crew started it off with a few memorable songs. Wang Chung was very good - they got the place jumping. Berlin was next. I don't see the appeal to Terri Dunn. She spent much of the time posing for cameras. Way too into herself. She had weak attempts at covering Grace Slick and Donna Summer - skip Berlin if you can. ABC was worth the wait. Martin Fry is a class act. His voice is fantastic. Only wish the ABC set lasted longer. The 4 band show started at 7:15 pm and ended at 10:32 pm.

by crispin on 7/11/09Gibson Amphitheatre at Universal CityWalk - Universal City

The show was great. It is great to see the bands that I listened to on the radio, in person. We had great seats although every seat is good at this venue. I will for sure go to the next "Regeneration Tour" Can't wait to see who will be there next year.

    ABC is A+++++ !

by Calisun on 7/11/09Gibson Amphitheatre at Universal CityWalk - Universal City

Lexicon of Love by ABC has been a favorite album of mine for a very long time. Years ago I also had the cassette version for the car and more recently I bought the CD. I need ABC where ever I go! Last night I finally got to see ABC LIVE! It was a fantastic show. Martin Fry's voice is tremendous as is the the band and the female singer. Seeing them live was excellent! The entire night was a lot of fun. Cutting Crew and Wang Chung got things started. Berlin sounded and looked great. Teri Nunn has still got it all! People in the pit went wild when she joined them while riding on the shoulders of a happy man. Berlin did a full set with all their hits

ABC - Still bringing a smile

by ytnchica on 7/11/09Gibson Amphitheatre at Universal CityWalk - Universal City

Martin Fry of ABC still has a great voice and a talented ensemble of musicians. I think I counted 7 people including himself. I really had a great time in the GA Pit Orchestra area. I felt like I was at an intimate nightclub! It was outstanding. Sadly we missed the other bands since we were driving in from about 6 hours away and got caught in traffic.

Berlin, ABC, Wang Chung, Cutting Crew 7/9/09

by EchoParkLife2C on 7/10/09Gibson Amphitheatre at Universal CityWalk - Universal City

Teri Nunn...sizzling hot radical babe! Tons of energy, oodles of sex appeal and still has an incredible voice! She can still bring it like she did in the 80's and really wow'd the crowd when she slipped onto her bodyguard's shoulders and got up close and personal with hundreds of fans in the orchestra pit. Now there's a performer who knows how to entertain an audience! ABC was adequate, but their sound quality left a lot to be desired. Martin Frye still has some great vocals, but compared to Berlin, he and his fellow Brits looked like they had some serious jet-lag going on! Wang Chung was the surprise of the night. Great sound quality, happy pop hits and some genuine enthusiasm and appreciation for getting the chance to play a great venue. Cutting Crew were better than I was expecting. The three songs I recognized were well done. The others were just so-so. I got my tix for $10.67 each, so obviously the show was well worth it for me and my date.

    Good 80's Comeback!

by Benjie on 7/10/09Gibson Amphitheatre at Universal CityWalk - Universal City

Great sets by all artists. However, wasn't too crazy about some of the new songs they released. At times the entire crowd was singing along to all the tunes. Caught the end of Wang Chung. Wang Chung, had the crowd jumping with "Everybody Wang Chung Tonight" and "Dance Hall Days"! Berlin, was great and looked gorgeous. She was talking to the crowd a lot and rocked the house with her last song, "Take My Breath Away". The headliner ABC was off the chain with "The Look of Love" and "Be Near Me". Great classics all can sing along to. There were actually a lot of empty seats in the nosebleads, but the pit was jumping. Overall, a great event.

    Good Times!

by Arlene on 7/10/09Gibson Amphitheatre at Universal CityWalk - Universal City

I love, love, loved the concert. Berlin and ABC was amazing! Terri Nunn still looks hot and she sounded great! These are the songs I grew up on so it was really nice to hang out with all my fellow 80's fans! Our section was fun . . . everyone singing along and dancing (80's style) Good times! Good times! I will definitely be going every year probably with a bigger crowd!

    Regeneration Tour-the 80s

by Leojmcca on 7/10/09Gibson Amphitheatre at Universal CityWalk - Universal City

I had a great time. We had open pit passes (no seats) and were concerned about not having an assigned seat, but time flew and we were front row baby! The show was really good. Cutting crew led off the night. They played their newer songs and they went well, but it became clear they had to much time and not enough hits to carry themesleves in the show. Similar for Wang Chung, who played some of their newer songs which was good, but if they just played their hits and said have a great night, that would have worked also. Berlin came out and did a great set of their hits. Closing the night was ABC, who puts on a great upbeat and energy filled show. I was disappointed that missing person (MP) did not play. I was told after the show that it was either Berlin or MP who played but not both. I think the show could handle both groups. Maybe cut the cutting crew/wang chung time down to three songs and let MP play. Now that would have made it a 5 star show.

Show rocked, but crowd was lame.

by TKANGER on 7/10/09Gibson Amphitheatre at Universal CityWalk - Universal City

This show was awesome. All bands sounded marvelous and they really put on a solid show. Cutting Crew, one of my favorite bands, from the 80s opened up the show and Wang Chung was simply spot on. It was truly a great concert with great performances. The one thing that was VERY disappointing had nothing to do with the show or the music but rather the crowd. I could not believe how rude and disrespectful many of the audience members were. The crowd in the pit, instead of pumping up the performers and bouncing off the energy of the performers felt inclined to stand back like deadbeats and spend the time videotaping the performers. These rock bands feed off the energy of the crowds and except for a few numbers, they were simply lethargic. I felt bad for some of the performers who really put their heart and soul in their music and came in with a lot of energy. For those who don't want to get into the music and choose to videotape instead, do us all a favor and watch your concerts on DVD.
