About

ABC IN CONCERT:

British new wave sensation ABC rose to fame in the early '80s thanks to their sophisticated pop sound and the splashy, stylish showmanship of lead singer Martin Fry. Three decades later Fry is as dapper and confident as ever at the band's live shows, crooning classic ABC hits like "The Look of Love" and "All My Heart" as if not a day had passed. From his charming accent and tailored suits to his perfectly preserved pipes, Fry remains a consummate performer, exuding the energy and charisma of a performer at the top of his game. Whether he's shooting that "Poison Arrow" straight to fans' hearts or warning that "Vanity Kills", Fry's passionate voice and upbeat stage presence always gets ticket buyers singing and dancing along on ABC's must-see tours.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

ABC formed in Sheffield, UK in the late '70s with Fry initially acting as the band's synth player. By 1980 he had become lead singer, and in 1981 ABC scored their first hit with the UK Top 20 single "Tears Are Not Enough". Their rise continued in 1982 with their debut album The Lexicon of Love, which topped the UK Albums Chart and scored a No. 1 dance hit in the US with "The Look of Love". Their chart success waned in the mid-'80s, but by 1987 ABC was back on top with their fourth album Alphabet City, which spawned the US dance chart No. 1 "When Smokey Sings". Though the band's lineup has evolved over the years, Fry has remained a constant, releasing albums and touring throughout the '90s and '00s. In 2008 he released ABC's eighth album Traffic, a stellar slice of '80s-inspired pop that critics hailed as a return to form. Since then he's continued to treat fans around the world to his signature debonair performances.

    Nostalgic and fun!

by STMR on 11/27/21The Canyon Montclair - Montclair

I enjoyed the music and lead singer, Martin Fry's, voice still holds up. However, the venue left much to be desired. There were people sitting in our seats because there weren't enough chairs set-up in the row!!! We were seat 4 and 5 and they were 9 and 10. They refused to move...in the interest of time, we moved back one row. We were lucky to find a couple of empty seats. The lay out of the chairs and dining tables were terrible. I would not come back to The Canyon in Montclair. City National Grove in Anaheim is much more organized and the dining area is set a few rows back from "chairs only." There was supposed to be a 2 drink minimum, but there weren't any servers available to take orders. I don't regret the band, ABC, just the venue. Booooo!

Never again - venue has issues

by 80z guy on 11/24/21The Canyon Montclair - Montclair

Canyon Montclair tried but came up short. Looks like several staff members arrived late for there shifts, servers were outnumbered, silverware for “required meals” were not given, desserts from a fixed menu was never served, dirty dishes stayed in front of us the entire concert. Tables were far too close together. ABC band was awesome! Sound was great.

    Great music

by Ric on 11/23/21The Canyon Montclair - Montclair

Great music and ABC were great, just a shame it wasn’t too well organized inside, short of staff, had to line up but then found didn’t need to as we had tickets, bought 3-meal food and only received the main. People in our seats and wouldn’t move and management had to get involved. Probably won’t use that venue again.

    Disappointed with venue

by Ajsoccer on 11/23/21The Canyon Montclair - Montclair

ABC was fantastic. Martin sounded great. The venue was disorganized, they require you to purchase a 3 course meal and do not have enough staff to serve. Most folks did not get all their food. Also they do not check vaccine cards or tests at the door as advertised.

    Venue a mess

by Stanshrew on 11/23/21The Canyon Montclair - Montclair

Had to stand outside for a hour, was told arrive early to pay for a dinner. My dinner came wrong about 3/4 into the concert. Never got my salad or dessert that I paid for. Chairs were so crammed together that I could swing legs under the table. Only thing good, was the band.

Great performance but other area needs improvement!

by Cris on 11/23/21The Canyon Montclair - Montclair

Love the “ABC” live performance. Unfortunately, the dinner that came with the show was poorly done. The food tasted ok, no drinks/water was served, very tight/crowded seating, no silverware was set...everything but the show was a bad experience!!!

    Band A+, seating F-

by John on 11/23/21The Canyon Montclair - Montclair

ABC was one of the best 80s bands I’ve seen recently. They sounded great and put on a great show. We had the dinner tables in front of the stage. It wasn’t just bad it was ridiculous how tight the seating was. The servers couldn’t even get down the aisle between tables to serve us. The person next to you had to make body contact with you constantly it was so crowded. The timing of the service was terrible and some people were getting their dinners at the end of the concert still. Dessert was included but never came. They said it was a server shortage but looked more like over capacity by 30% at least.

Number one, music was fantastic. Martin Fry still has that voice he produces from their 80's hits. Secondly, atmosphere was great. Lastly, company was awesome. Thank you

Martin was joyful and fun, and didn’t miss a note! The musicianship of the band members was amazing. Thank you ABC for a beautiful walk through my younger years.

ABC Awesome...Timing of overall show seemed rushed

by MusicMomo on 9/22/15The Canyon - Agoura Hills

ABC was incredible. What a fun show. My next favorite part was Annabelle Lwin from Bow Wow Wow. HOWEVER, for some reason, they only allowed her three songs (she was a guest of Boys Don't Cry). I would have MUCH rather seen her perform longer than listen to Boys Don't Cry or the opening band. She seemed upset by it and the crowd seemed bummed that she had to go so soon.

abc @ the canyon club on 09/19/15

by ScottVentura on 9/22/15The Canyon - Agoura Hills

it was pretty good. ABC sounds awesome live. But, they barely played for an hour and that included doing ONE encore....that's right, ONE! Their set needs some work because When Smokey Sings, The Look of Love and Be Near Me should have been the encores. It was a weird set but one of the highlights was Vanity Kills. Martin Fry looks and sounds great and I hope he eventually gets the praise and respect he deserves and is placed in the ranks of Bryan Ferry or Boy George. Don't get me wrong, it was worth waiting 20+ years to hear them live (where are you Mark White!!!) but I hope they re-think their set order in the future.

    Fun show!

by daisies911 on 10/8/14Saban Theatre - Beverly Hills

ABC is now really just Martin Fry and a backing band, but Martin sounds great and looks even better. The backing band is good, but I really expected a little more oomph from them, especially the keyboardist. A lot of the great electronic sounds from ABC's classics were missing, rendering them a bit bland. But Martin performed all of the hits, including "Poison Arrow," "How To Be A Millionaire," "All Of My Heart," "When Smokey Sings" and "Be Near Me." The crowd was a bit lame, staying seated most of the time -- I was in the front row and felt kind of bad for standing, but, hey, it's a concert, get off your butt! The opening act was the guitarist from the backing band, Matt Backer. He's a fine singer and guitarist, but his style of music was not compatible with this show. I found him a bit boring. Before both acts, legendary '80s DJ Richard Blade spun requests and played '80s trivia with the audience. That was a good time-killer -- especially since the Saban said on its website that doors were at 6 and the show was at 7, when the times were really 7 and 8. Totally weak on their part.
