A Charlie Brown Christmas on Tour

Christmas comes but once a year, and so does A Charlie Brown Christmas, the Charlie Brown-iest of seasonal theatrical spectacles. Based on the Emmy- and Peabody-winning 1965 animated television special inspired by artist Charles M. Schulz's classic Peanuts comic strip, which ran from 1950 to 2000, A Charlie Brown Christmas has been an evergreen holiday event since 2013.

Set amid the wintry delights of Schulz's Minnesota childhood, A Charlie Brown Christmas finds the Peanuts gang working out the true meaning of Christmas for themselves in a world devoid of adult supervision. And if, like the musical's title character, you suffer from unfulfilled seasonal expectations, you'll find a natural palliative in composer Vince Guaraldi's jazzy score, which has sold more than four million copies since its initial release thanks to the irrepressible swing of songs like "Linus and Lucy," "Skating" and "Christmas Time Is Here."

About A Charlie Brown Christmas

Commissioned by the Coca-Cola company, A Charlie Brown Christmas was pitched, written and produced on a tiny budget for television in a flash in 1965. It became an unexpected hit and a holiday perennial on the strength of its delightful translation of the comic strip's iconic child cast to the small screen. The stage adaptation, authorized by the Schulz family and producer Lee Mendelson, retains everything delightful about the TV special, which was written by veteran TV director Bill Melendez.

As his friends skate and cavort in their winter wonderland, a depressed Charlie Brown gets out of his seasonal funk with the help of Lucy, who suggests he direct a Christmas play. Against all obstacles, a truly Charlie Brown Christmas tree — puny and bereft of glitz and glory — inspires a moving message about the true meaning of Christmas. Jazz composer Vince Guaraldi's lively songs alternate with classic Christmas carols, and productions often conclude with an audience sing-along.

  • Live event.

Our seats were in a very good spot. The event itself we feel could have been better. The performance felt like something you would see from junior high school or high school students. We were expecting a better show.

  • It was ok

I think the kids that were brought by their parents and grandparents had a good time and enjoyed the show, but I was expecting more. There was a lot of flailing and not as much substance. There was a carol singing portion that just kind of started and would have been more successful if explained to the kids that we were all going to sing carols together and the words should have been projected on screens. On the contrary, last year we went to How the Grinch stole Christmas at the Boch theater in Boston and it was fanctastic. I've also been to serveral Nutcrackers and Christmas Carols which were also very good. Don't mean to be a Grinch, but I would not recommend the show to others as it was just ok.

  • Cute Performance

The show was cute and kept everyone's attention. It definitely follows the peanuts Christmas show and book. If you are bringing children, there is a short intermission as well as a part of the show that includes the audience. I went with all adults and we had a good time.

  • Delightful!

What a great little show. We really enjoyed it. The cast was amazing. Snoopy was hysterical. Loved Schroeder and Pig-Pen. It was a well needed good time. Thank you.

I took my grandson to the show. We both loved it!! I loved all the Christmas carols added in, the fun audience participation, and the word for word dialogue just like the tv special! Extremely talented cast, we especially loved Snoopy and Sally! Definitely will look for this again!

  • Well-done, but quite hard to see and hear clearly.y.

My two guests and I were near the front of the 1st balcony. The actors really did well, and especially the amazing piano player. But human-size figures are very difficult to see from that far back, especially their facial expressions. And I think we could have heard better if they spoke a bit more slowly and carefully. If the characters and action were magnified on large screens on the sides of the stage, we would probably have seen, understood, and enjoyed it better. The whole play was cute, but not worth $190, (including $25 parking!)

  • Great Performance

by GW34 on 11/26/24DeVos Performance Hall - Grand RapidsRating: 4 out of 5

This performance was excellent. It closely followed the original Charlie Brown Christmas script with a few extras. The kids all loved Snoopy and his antics got plenty of chuckles from the grown-ups, too. The performers had great singing voices and the Christmas carols they sang were great - some varied from the traditional renditions that we typically hear. Overall, I would give this two thumbs up (because I only have two thumbs)!
