About

Steve Miller has been an enlivening presence on the American music scene for more than half a century - and, in the course of that era, his releases have sold tens of millions of records and been streamed several billion times. Miller's Greatest Hits 1974-78 received the RIAA Diamond Award with sales of more than fifteen million copies. It is among the 25 best-selling albums of all time.

At the start of his career, Miller soon became a mainstay of the San Francisco music scene that upended American culture in the late '60s. With albums like Children of the Future, Sailor and Brave New World, Miller perfected a psychedelic blues sound that drew on the deepest sources of American roots music and simultaneously articulated a compelling vision of what music - and, indeed, society - could be in the years to come.

Then, in the '70s, Miller crafted a brand of pure pop that was smart, polished, exciting and irresistible - and that dominated radio in a way that few artists have ever managed. Hit followed hit in what seemed like an endless flow: "The Joker," "Take the Money and Run," "Rock'n Me," "Fly Like an Eagle," "Jet Airliner," "Jungle Love," "Swingtown" and "Abracadabra," among them. To this day, those songs are instantly recognizable when they crop up online or on the radio - and impossible not to sing along with. Their hooks are the very definition of indelible.

Running through Miller's distinctive catalog is a combination of virtuosity and song craft. And that's no accident. His parents were jazz aficionados - not to mention close friends of Les Paul and Mary Ford - so, as a budding guitarist, Miller absorbed valuable lessons from that musical tradition. When the family moved to Texas, Miller deepened his education in the blues, eventually relocating to Chicago, where he played with Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Buddy Guy and Paul Butterfield. That range of sources informs his music to this day.

In recent years, Miller has fully immersed himself in the blues and its many byways. As he has always done, he continues to find creative outlets for the full panoply of his musical passions. On his successful tours with the Steve Miller Band, he complements the commercial peaks of his extensive catalogue with lesser-known songs that expand his fans' awareness of the range of his work. As a member of the Board of Directors at Jazz at Lincoln Center, he has curated and headlined a series of shows that explore themes like the bridge from blues to jazz in the music of guitar great T-Bone Walker; the distinctive sounds of the blues triangle of Memphis, Texas and Chicago; the resonances between the singular musical creations of Ma Rainey and Miles Davis; the deep American roots music of Appalachia; and Cannonball Adderley and the Blues. In addition, at the request of Wynton Marsalis, he is defining a blues pedagogy for Jazz at Lincoln Center. He is also a member of the visiting committee of the Department of Musical Instruments at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Indeed, five of his guitars were displayed in "Play It Loud: The Instruments of Rock and Roll," a groundbreaking exhibition at the Met that ran for six months in 2019. Miller was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016 and has been elected for induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2022. He has recently begun to open his vaults for the first time, releasing the acclaimed Welcome to the Vault box set in 2019 and Breaking Ground Live! August 3, 1977 in 2021.

With each listen the beauty and immediacy of Miller's work, whether at its most playful or most serious, is palpable. As always, whether he was riding the top of the charts or traveling the endless blue highways of American music, you can hear him playing and singing with conviction and precision, passion and eloquence, making music that is at once immediately accessible, thrillingly alive in the present, respectful of the past, and more than able to stand the test of time. - Anthony DeCurtis

Steve Miller St Augustine Amphitheater December 16th 2023

by PhotonJohn on 12/19/23The St. Augustine Amphitheatre - St Augustine

Steve Miller put on a phenomenal show during a tropical depression. Samantha Fox was a great addition. Steve is a natural performer the best concert we have ever been to. I'm a 72-year-old male. Went with my wife and had a blast. Thank you Steve and Samantha.

    Utter Disappointment

by J Kelly on 12/19/23The St. Augustine Amphitheatre - St Augustine

Although Florida was covered by a tropical system creating heavy downpours and tropical storm level winds, Steve Miller Band and the St Augustine Amphitheatre decided to move forward with a shortened show instead of making the safer decision to reschedule. Like many, many ticket holders, we made the difficult but necessary and safe decision to not attend and lose out on the money invested in tickets.

    Disappointed

by judsontr on 12/19/23The St. Augustine Amphitheatre - St Augustine

Bought tickets more to see opening act Samantha Fish - due to rain, somebody decided to cancel her, but still have Steve Miller play - email stating such said she would play some songs as well in one long set. `Steve Miller had her play on 2 songs with him singing, did not let her play her songs or sing, and then, later in his performance, caller her Samantha Fox. He should have been gracious enough to have her play a couple of her songs. I would not have purchased tickets just to see Steve Miller - while he had some good songs, many of his songs to me were not much more than upscale elevator music. After he called her Samantha Fox later in the performance, we left - he came off as very arrogant to me. What a disappointment!

    Should've been canceled

by SMB Fan on 12/19/23The St. Augustine Amphitheatre - St Augustine

For 2 days leading up to the show, the storm was forecasted. There was severe weather alerts, flood warnings, and high winds advisories. We were instructed by all weather stations not to drive or travel. Received email prior to show start, stating Steve Miller would take stage immediately at 7:30, no opener. Was told they played short set to very small attendance. Show should have been canceled, rescheduled and/ or refunded.

    Awesome!!

by Jo on 12/19/23The St. Augustine Amphitheatre - St Augustine

It was a great concert, even in the cold rain. Place was packed. Unfortunately we did not stay for the whole thing because of the weather. I felt that st Augustine could have postponed it to the next day. I had my tickets for a couple months but who knew Florida was going to get hit with a typhoon. Samantha Fish only got to do 2 songs with Steve miller.

A difficult show due to the weather.

by Tuna on 12/19/23The St. Augustine Amphitheatre - St Augustine

Pouring rain to get in and out. Loved the clean no exposed amp stage set up. Steve has rearranged some of his songs to give them a more melodic sound. I liked the show but I am glad I saw him when he was doing the harder edge versions. He's 80. I'm 72. I would say over 50% of the audience was under 50.

    Steve Guitar Master Miller

by Holly Rocker on 12/19/23The St. Augustine Amphitheatre - St Augustine

Amazing Concert. Great songs, great guitar playing love the story about the Les Paul guitar. He used 10-12 different guitars during the 2 hour show. I know understand how his memorable sounds that I heard as a teenager were possible. Looking to watch him again.

    Living Legend

by Jay Ro on 12/19/23The St. Augustine Amphitheatre - St Augustine

This was the 5th time I've seen Steve Miller in concert, but I haven't seen him live since 1994. He was as awesome today as he was back then. Time has not dulled his talent. Taking my wife and 2 teenagers made the show extra special, but the St Augustine Amp really should allow umbrellas.

A huge disappointment by cancelling Samantha Fish

by Rotumatom on 12/19/23The St. Augustine Amphitheatre - St Augustine

I bought the tickets to see the opening act, The Samantha Fish Band. It was cold, windy and rainy, but we were there. Canceling Samantha Fish so Steve Miller could start early was a huge disappointment. She played a total of 11 minutes with him but it was not her music. He was fine, but nothing to get excited about. When he closed the show, he thanked Samantha Fox. He didn't even know her name. They did not even have any of her merchandise

    Awesome show, terrible weather

by Doug on 12/19/23The St. Augustine Amphitheatre - St Augustine

SMB was amazing, so many great songs and the band had a real energy (they have probably played these songs a million times). Highlights were Serenade (underrated song) and Rock'n me. Weather was terrible, not the bands' fault and they put the opener Samantha Fish together with the show to make the event shorter. Clean sound and not a bunch of fancy lighting and background, just music. Loved it. Total recommend!

by Inspired on 12/19/23The St. Augustine Amphitheatre - St Augustine

Great show in the pouring rain. Band started early and closed the Amp down. Great to hear the stories from Steve Miller about his early life and years to become a star.

    Such a great concert!!

by Jansome on 12/19/23The St. Augustine Amphitheatre - St Augustine

Steve sounded great, and so did the rest of the band! He introduced every song with a little story, which made it all very special. I had no idea he was such a masterful guitarist either. He played all my favorites...so many great songs!! Loved the venue and the crowd. Could not BELIEVE he is 80! Go Steve!

    Great Show

by PWF on 12/19/23The St. Augustine Amphitheatre - St Augustine

Well the weather was no fun but show was incredible. At this time in his career the guitar playing and band are tight and sounded great. Even the voice, might not be the same but awesome as always. Plus the bonus of seein and hearing couple of classic blues songs with Samantha Fish, how great was that. A once in a lifetime special treat.

    Bad weather

by Turbo on 12/19/23The St. Augustine Amphitheatre - St Augustine

This concert took place at an outdoor venue. Even though most seats are under cover, the roof is very high. High winds and torrential rains were forecasted by the NWS but the concert went on as per St Augustine Amphitheatre policy of rain or shine events. My date and I were not in favor of sitting there in ponchos so we didn’t go.

    Bad situation

by brianrowland on 12/19/23The St. Augustine Amphitheatre - St Augustine

Gale force winds and driving rains for an outdoor concert is simply ridiculous. Add to that, the venue did not allow you to walk in with an umbrella. We skipped it, took our losses and learned a bad lesson. "Rain or shine"should not mean we have to trudge through a 1/2 mile to a mile from where we would have to park and get totally drenched.

Steve Miller rocked at the age of 80 did not disappoint

by Eyego4fsu on 12/19/23The St. Augustine Amphitheatre - St Augustine

We just saw Steve Miller and Saint Augustine in a pouring downpour and wind gusting 30 to 40 miles an hour at an outside amphitheater. Steve Miller, and 80 years old did not disappoint. It was worth doing it in the rain. He came on and sang and played his guitar for two hours like he was 30 years old

Steve Miller & Samantha Fish Rocked the Amp!

by Carl on 12/19/23The St. Augustine Amphitheatre - St Augustine

Amid severe weather warnings for the FL northeast coast, the show was allowed to go on! Because of the weather, Samantha's set had to be cut (unfortunately), but they brought her on stage to play several tunes with the Steve Miller Band! What an amazing performance! They both appeared to be having a fine time, playing legendary blues music! Such synergy between them! Was so pleased that we got to see both of those artists! While the storm raged on, the "Amp was not damp", and the crowd was blown away by the performance!
