    Budget Production, Great Performers

    by AG on 3/9/24

First of all, the talent on stage was great, with excellent voices throughout. However. This touring production was very clearly going for a children's puppet theater style. It felt like a poor way to excuse what must have been an extremely tight budget. The costumes and set were disappointing, and not a tap shoe in sight! Ensemble stayed in blacks that distracted from any pieces they added to change character. After seeing the live show, I just wanted to go home and watch the recorded Broadway version to get the full experience. And that is not something I want to feel after leaving a theatre!

    Terrible sound system

by Lisa on 3/9/24Centennial Hall - Tucson

I feel terrible for the players, because the Soundsystem was so awful. You could hardly hear any of the words they spoke. The music was so much louder than their voices. It made the characters with high-pitched voices, excruciating to listen to. The dancing was good. Get it together Broadway on Tucson and Centennial Hall.

    Show was good but…….

    by MEC1 on 3/9/24Centennial Hall - Tucson

The people who played Fiona and Lord Farquaard were excellent. Outstanding both of them. And the donkey and Pinocchio were also excellent. The weakest link to me and those in my group was Shrek himself. He vacillated between having a Scottish accent and not and singing well and on key, then not. The sound was horrible. Could not hear the entire first act. The songs were good. A very entertaining show. Even the cheesy stage set up worked.

This reimagined shrek is just awful

by Bryan on 2/28/24The Stanley - Utica

Don't go see this...fatwaste of money for the cheapest tour you've ever seen. The stage set was the worst I've ever seen and the costumes were equally bad...you will pay way too much for it. Do...not...go!

    Not like the original production

by CP on 2/27/24The Stanley - Utica

I want to say to start that the entire cast sounded phenomenal and presented a very talented group of performers. That said, this is a very different show from what we were expecting based on the original Broadway production. There were three or four songs cut out of the show entirely and a number of lines changed or omitted. All together it made for a story that was all over the place and lacked a lot of the laughs.

Good show, but it definitely is the traveling version

by CatsPajamas on 2/27/24The Stanley - Utica

I came into the performance perhaps a bit biased having seen the recording of the original broadway production. I was disappointed that some of the great original songs had been cut like Donkey Pot Pie and This Is How A Dream Comes True and I found the puppets used in this version to be a little off-putting. The actors were solid and performed pretty well, but the whole thing did feel a little low budget. Donkey was just wearing a sweatsuit for example. I’ve noticed this not just in this show but others as well that they are getting very politically correct-it takes away from much of the original humor of the show and really the franchise as a whole. Shrek always kind of pushed the envelope a little bit for a children’s film and to see the show take out any references to things like bipolarism, Shrek’s weight, Lord Farquad’s height, etc. was a bit disappointing because of how it affected the original storyline. So overall it’s a solid show that maintains some of the entertainment of the original but fits more into the low budget travel version of a production more so than others I’ve seen.

    So much fun!

by Juliana on 2/27/24The Stanley - Utica

My friends and I drove 2 hours to see the show, and bought front row seats. It was so much fun to cheer on the cast and we even dressed in characters. Great for families, friends, and even myself, a college student.

The show was great, only ask is that the music be a little quieter so you can better hear the voices.

    Good And Not So Good

by Papou on 12/30/23Center Theatre at North Shore Center for the Performing Arts - Skokie

The staging, costumes, music, and scenery were very good. Shrek’s accent made it very difficult to understand his lines. A few other performers were a bit problematic, but not as bad as Shrek. I heard other guests saying the same thing.

    Worth seeing this crew!

by Star on 12/29/23Center Theatre at North Shore Center for the Performing Arts - Skokie

We were very impressed with the singing and costumes! Great crew - professional acting with quite a few local actresses! My kids loved it as did I. Really nice to have a live orchestra as well. Thank you for a wonderful theater experience!

    Shrek Review/Metropolis Theater Works

by Vicki M. on 12/23/23Center Theatre at North Shore Center for the Performing Arts - Skokie

The Shrek show was very well put together from the costumes, scenery, and the talented actors. Though the show has a kids theme, all audience members will enjoy it. The message of being your authentic self and treating others with love, kindness, and respect is great! The only criticism I would give is to cut a few scenes/songs so the run time is shorter. I found myself becoming restless towards the end and children will also experience that. I recently saw How the Grinch Stole Christmas, which also is geared towards a younger audience, and it ran for 85 minutes with no intermission. That time slot seemed to work well for the adults and children in the audience. In conclusion, if they cut down the running time, the play would be more successful!

    shrek

    by M. T. on 12/21/22Avalon Theatre - Grand Junction

Sound system could be improved. Too low in first Act, sharp high pitched voices were too loud, couldn't understand words spoken. Hurt ears. Second act sort of same problem, loudness improved only a little ,but still sharp. When actors yelled, it was too loud, actors should know this and not yell like they had no mic. Ok for a small town play.

    Shrek

by DB on 12/21/22Avalon Theatre - Grand Junction

I really enjoyed the performance. I like the fact that it follwed the movie for the most part but added its own flare. The costumes were wonderful, as were the performers.

    Too long

by Tina on 12/20/22Avalon Theatre - Grand Junction

It was a bit drawn out especially for kids over an hour before the first intermission. My kid is 10 and was ready to go after 2 hours.
