Sacramento Kings History

The Sacramento Kings' lineage traces to Rochester, New York, where they played under four names, including the Royals, for 12 years (1945–57). Led by Hall of Famers Bob Davies, Bobby Wanzer and Arnie Risen, the team defeated the New York Knicks to win the NBA championship in 1951, the highlight of a seven-year run in the playoffs.

The Royals moved to Cincinnati for the 1957–58 season and added local college standout Oscar Robertson in 1960. Led by the "Big O," they advanced to the division finals in the 1962–63 and 1963–64 seasons, with the second year featuring contributions from Rookie of the Year Jerry Lucas.

After a five-year run of futility in the late 1960s and early '70s, the team relocated to Kansas City, adopting the name the Kings because the city's MLB team was named the Royals. For three years, the franchise divided its home games between Kansas City and Omaha, Nebraska, and were known as the Kansas City-Omaha Kings. Led by Coach of the Year Phil Johnson, they made the playoffs in 1974–75. In the 10 seasons that followed as the Kansas City Kings, the team made the playoffs four times, most memorably in 1980–81 behind guard Otis Birdsong.

The franchise relocated to Sacramento in 1985, but failed to post a winning record until the lockout-shortened 1998–99 season, when a team led by Chris Webber, Vlade Divac, Vernon Maxwell, Scot Pollard, and Jon Barry went 27-23. It was the first of eight consecutive seasons in the playoffs, highlighted by a trip to the 2002 Conference Finals.

In 2023, under new coach Mike Brown and All-Stars Domantas Sabonis and De’Aaron Fox, the Kings advanced to the playoffs, ultimately losing in the first round to reigning NBA champions the Golden State Warriors in a close seven-game series. Brown was named the 2022–23 season’s Coach of the Year, while Fox collected the league’s first Clutch Player of the Year Award.

by Sactown Sam on 3/10/25Golden 1 Center - SacramentoRating: 5 out of 5

Great view from the Michelob Ultra area bar stool to watch the mostly friendly welcome back to Sac for SWIPA the FOX. The KING'S Lit the Beam to illustrate the talent the new team has developed.

by Best Game in the NBA on 2/25/25Rating: 5 out of 5

We travel 2 1.5 hours to watch the Kings play. It’s such a great time! Clean simple venue with friendly staff and friendly Sacramentans💜 The cowbells are an experience in itself and if you can get out early enough the beam is amazing! Lots of cheap reasonable easy parking and lots of reasonable priced foods in the mall! Must see NBA experience for a date night or family day/night!

  • Too expensive for bad seats

    by Jay on 2/25/25Golden 1 Center - SacramentoRating: 3 out of 5

I've came to a lot of games and this stadium is the most expensive.

  • Amazing Arena

    by Warriors Fan 1282 on 2/24/25Golden 1 Center - SacramentoRating: 5 out of 5

The arena was very cool. Even at the very top of the arena, I had the best view of the Warriors beating the Sacramento Kings. The Downtown Commons being right outside is very convenient and also a nice added touch. Very simple to get into the arena and find my seat. I would definitely come back again even if it wasn't for a Kings vs. Warriors game.

  • Kings Game Day

by Soul Rebel Spirit on 1/9/25Golden 1 Center - SacramentoRating: 5 out of 5

I was a Laker fan for half my life until the Kings relocated here to Sacramento. We have the best fans in all of basketball, the best arena in all of basketball. Getting to games, parking, getting tickets, is a breeze. The location of Golden 1 Center is centrally located in the heart of downtown next to many shops and restaurants. It is a great facility. There really are no bad seats. The food is awesome. The Kings are always entertaining and exciting to watch.

  • This venue isn’t great

    by Cait on 1/4/25Golden 1 Center - SacramentoRating: 2 out of 5

Golden 1 is so poorly designed. Bathrooms are uncomfortable, seats have no leg room, and everything is expensive. I would not go if there were other options

  • Everyone on the Mavs decided not to play.

    by AK on 1/4/25Golden 1 Center - SacramentoRating: 1 out of 5

Klay, Kyrie, Luka, and Derek lively decided not to play right before the game and it definitely took a toll on the experience on the game. Should have gotten a partial refund on the game.

  • Fun Kings Win! But Where Were Maverick’s Star Players!

    by Teri on 1/2/25Golden 1 Center - SacramentoRating: 5 out of 5

It was great to see Kings play with energy and get the win against the Mavericks. Go Kings!!! We were disappointed that a few of the Mav’s star players were out. We chose this game to not only cheer for the Kings, but also to watch Kyrie, Luka & Clay (we realize that Luka is injured). It seems that the Maverick’s management did not follow league policy. Ticket prices are higher for teams with stars such as Kyrie and Luka. It seems that partial refunds should be made to fans when more than one star player is MIA.

  • Great Experience

Awesome venue and atmosphere. Our first time coming to this venue awesome layout

  • I Stayed For the 2nd Half. The Kings Didn't

by Dundo Numero Uno on 12/25/24Golden 1 Center - SacramentoRating: 1 out of 5

If you heard or saw the game, you heard and saw what I did. Expectations in the 80s and 90s, post-2006, were not high. They are now because of the 2022-2023 season and the obtaining of DeMar DeRozan this offseason. DeMar's back must still be hurting. He doesn't know how to shoot anymore, and his teammates must realize this as they don't pass the ball to him. Coach Brown is burning out Domas and DeAron and if he has no confidence in the reserves, then he and the GM need to talk. The Kings are locked in the 12th position by more games than any other team in any position in both conferences. If the conference had 30 teams, that would not be bad, but it doesn't. It's not too late and I see that Coach Brown is trying to work out the reserves rotation. Good for him. Shooting practice will help. If they just practice among themselves it gives them the false sense that they can play defense. The Kings' offense inhales.

  • Fun for my whole family.

by SacTown Roar on 12/25/24Golden 1 Center - SacramentoRating: 5 out of 5

Those boys should have played much better, but that’s sports… what do you do? I’ll tell you what to do. You stay faithful your whole life and maybe the Kings win the whole thing and maybe they don’t. Go Kings!!!
