Sacramento Kings History

The Sacramento Kings' lineage traces to Rochester, New York, where they played under four names, including the Royals, for 12 years (1945–57). Led by Hall of Famers Bob Davies, Bobby Wanzer and Arnie Risen, the team defeated the New York Knicks to win the NBA championship in 1951, the highlight of a seven-year run in the playoffs.

The Royals moved to Cincinnati for the 1957–58 season and added local college standout Oscar Robertson in 1960. Led by the "Big O," they advanced to the division finals in the 1962–63 and 1963–64 seasons, with the second year featuring contributions from Rookie of the Year Jerry Lucas.

After a five-year run of futility in the late 1960s and early '70s, the team relocated to Kansas City, adopting the name the Kings, as the city's MLB team was already named the Royals. For three years, the franchise divided its home games between Kansas City and Omaha, Nebraska, and were known as the Kansas City-Omaha Kings. Led by Coach of the Year Phil Johnson, they made the playoffs in 1974–75. In the 10 seasons that followed as the Kansas City Kings, the team made the playoffs four times, most memorably in 1980–81 behind guard Otis Birdsong.

The franchise relocated to Sacramento in 1985, but failed to post a winning record until the lockout-shortened 1998–99 season, when a team led by Chris Webber, Vlade Divac, Vernon Maxwell, Scot Pollard, and Jon Barry went 27-23. It was the first of eight consecutive seasons in the playoffs, highlighted by a trip to the 2002 Conference Finals.

In 2023, under new coach Mike Brown and All-Stars Domantas Sabonis and De’Aaron Fox, the Kings advanced to the playoffs, ultimately losing in the first round to reigning NBA champions the Golden State Warriors in a close seven-game series.

    So. Much. Fun.

by Laura on 12/5/23Golden 1 Center - Sacramento

We had a great time at the Kings Game. Golden 1 Center is an amazing venue with kind and hospitable staff. Our seats were comfortable with a clear view of the action. Going to Kings Games is rare for us (tickets can be pretty pricey), but we had a wonderful experience and would love to go again sometime.

An experience fit for a king!

by Ruk on 12/2/23Golden 1 Center - Sacramento

Had a great time with my family at the Sacramento Kings game! Not only was the entire staff friendly, from outside crews, to concession stand employees and everyone in between. Prices were better than reasonable even for a family of five. I highly recommend attending a Kings game at the Golden 1 center and to be honest there isn’t a bad seat in the house!

Game sucked but arena was cool

by Stardog on 11/19/23Golden 1 Center - Sacramento

My Cavaliers turned in a stinker of a game in Sactown but I have to give credit to the Customer Service team. I was at the game with a Phish phriend who started having some combo of PTSD and vertigo as we were ascending the stairs to our upper level seats. She'd had a traumatic experience at the 10/17/21 Phish show at the Chase Arena in San Francisco (the one were a crazy guy jumped from the upper level and died), which occurred near her that night. She apparently hadn't been in the upper level of an arena since then, so it freaked her out. The Customer Service desk was very nice about it and relocated us to seats in row C, which were much better for her even though it was still in the upper deck. I like Golden One Arena a lot, it is a classy venue.

The upper level is so steep and scary!

by Van on 11/11/23Golden 1 Center - Sacramento

I will never buy tickets for the upper level 2 again!! The seats are not comfortable due to how steep it is up there. If you’re afraid of heights I def don’t recommend. There’s zero access to an entrance/exit on the farthest row of 211, 213 etc. so bring the elderly you have to narrowly go up and down the stairs. I don’t know why they built it this way. And I called to ask if I could exchange or get my $ and they said NO!

Excellent venue for seeing an NBA game

    by D. on 11/1/23Golden 1 Center - Sacramento

It was my first time visiting Golden1 Center, I really enjoyed watching the Lakers play the Kings. The staff were friendly and helpful and concessions were quick and easy. The staff were also really attentive and accommodating to my family as we had our toddler, so passing through metal detectors they made sure we were able to stay together. It was a really intense game and was a lot of fun for my whole family and kings fans were friendly and nice toward us even though we were cheering for the lakers. This created a positive atmosphere and never felt threatening or intimidating, everyone just had a good time. This venue, though its large is able to be accessed easily and feels very welcoming, parking was convenient and getting to the location is convenient as well being located by major freeways, I would definitely attend another NBA game here.

    Wash Up

by SeasonTix since 1988 on 11/1/23Golden 1 Center - Sacramento

Golden 1 Center is filthy and the situation is getting worse. Seeing how bad the cleaning is where I sit, I can only imagine how bad it is in food service areas.

Tough to bring a less than able walker to Golden One in Sac

by Daughter of the Year on 10/30/23Golden 1 Center - Sacramento

My 85-year-old mom is a HUGE fan of Steph Curry and the Warriors. I spent $1000+ on tickets for three of us to see a game in person to celebrate my mom's birthday. We were all so excited for opening night at Golden One and to see the Kings vs. Warriors. The walk from where were dropped off was long, but slow and steady won the race. The security line is exactly what threw us off our game for the night. Her purse was about 2 inches too wide for the "no bag policy". I have not been to a game in years and this was my Mom's first major league basketball experience so we didn't know. My mom was not able to walk any further around the Arena outside to find bag check and was forced to throw her purse into the garbage or skip the game. She put her cash, credit card, and tissues into her pocket. Unfortunately, two $20 bills were lost sometime during the night which upset her. AND the fact that we saw so many other ladies with much larger bags made for such a disappointing experience. Basketball is for everyone - not just the able bodied who can use a smartphone for everything and skip carrying a purse for the evening. So disappointed that this first (and last) experience had such a rough start. Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion should include age and able body discrimination.

    Good time

by OlJess on 10/22/23Golden 1 Center - Sacramento

Only a pre-season game but the Kings won and the crowd was great. I like being able to put the tix on my phone wallet. Did not have to bring my real wallet.

Fantastic location, great parking near by.

by Rui Bastos on 10/19/23Golden 1 Center - Sacramento

We are GSW fans but decided that since their home game tickets are really overpriced, that we would check games close by and it paid off. Found prepaid parking with the city of Sacramento for US$ 40.00 and the Golden 1 arena is awesome. The employees are super polite and funny. We had a great game. Thank you.
