New York Jets History

Beginning play at the Polo Ground in 1960 as The Titans of New York, the franchise changed their name to the Jets in 1963 before adopting Shea Stadium as their home in 1964. In 1968, the Jets became the first AFL representative to defeat the NFL in the Super Bowl as the team beat the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III, an improbable victory that was made possible in part by their quarterback, "Broadway" Joe Namath.

The Jets made a return to the playoffs in the ’80s, and in 1982 made an appearance in the AFC Championship game. Between 2001 and 2010, the Jets made the playoffs six times.

New York Jets at MetLife Stadium

The Jets play their home games at MetLife Stadium, an open-air, multi-purpose stadium located at the Meadowlands Sports Complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey. MetLife is also home to the New York Giants, which makes it one of only two stadiums to be shared by two NFL teams.

MetLife Stadium opened in 2010 and upon its construction, which cost $1.6 billion, was the most expensive stadiums to be built in the U.S. MetLife Stadium has a capacity of 82,500 and has hosted such events as Super Bowl XLVII, Copa America Centenario Final, and the 2021 Army-Navy Game. MetLife will also be one of the sites for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Jets’ biggest rivals are the New England Patriots, Miami Dolphins, and Buffalo Bills.

The New York Jets have reached the Super Bowl championship once, beating the Colts 16-7 in Super Bowl III in 1969 — the first championship game for which the NFL officially coined the "Super Bowl" name.

The New York Jets were originally named the Titans of New York, but the franchise was sold in 1963 and renamed the Jets. They were renamed the Jets since the team would play near LaGuardia Airport, and because Jets rhymed with the New York Mets, with whom they’d share Shea Stadium.

THEY DON'T THINK ABOUT THE PEDESTRIAN

by Karen on 10/9/23MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford

I am a tourist and I decided to stay in a hotel near the stadium, but to be able to return there is no bridge to cross, there are no paths for pedestrians, cars always have priority, that hindered our return, where it took us more than 2 hours to Being able to order an Uber that exceeds the costs, exaggerated.

    Home at 2am

by Slettemark on 9/17/23MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford

Exciting game, but why does it have to take three hours to get home to Manhattan? The transport and logistics are a joke.

    great game! terrible parking

by jets82 on 9/14/23MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford

I have been going to the Old Giants Statdium and Met life forever. It seems to me that the parking situation has gotten way worse over the years. They have all the roads going in one direction on the way out and it takes hours to get out of the Stadium. They also had only a few exists open which creates mayhem. Please..open more exits so people can leave the stadium. It is a real deterrant. Also, having to buy a parking pass makes last minute game purchases impossible. Paying for parking at the gate makes more sense! The price of parking is out of control. I paid $84 for a parking pass. $40 at the gate and be done with it! On the bright side: the music, the wrist bands, the fire works, and the social media hype was all fantastic!

But they don’t. And then there are 3 jet men?? Two look so stupid leave just the fireman the true one the others I had to tell my kids there copy cats and must have issues don’t show them on the screen they make our team look like low end!!

    by jetsfan123 on 1/11/23

I love this team but this is the worst stadium ever. This team is awful and everyone hypes them up, and they fail every year. Disappointed

    Why tailgate?

by Griffin on 11/10/22MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford

Drove to jets game with car and a trailer. Took about an hour to get into park the car and they charged us an extra $80 for our small u haul trailer. We were on our way south and we’re catching game on our way.We had to wait so long to get through security and to our seats that we missed kick-off and half the first quarter. Leaving was worse, waited in line for over an hour just to get out of parking lot and we were near an exit. I guess the parking charges include rent. I now know why people tailgate. Much better to bring a bar b q and set up shop in the parking lot than to try and get in or out near the actual game time. Next time I’ll watch the game on TV

    The battle of New York

by The Governor on 11/9/22MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford

My 2nd pro football game, since I saw the Jets and Steelers in 78. It was also my nephew's 1st game, and we both had a blast! We obviously chose the best possible game on the schedule, being against the AFC champions Buffalo Bills. I seriously felt that the Jets were very capable of beating them, and because I was in the minority, it made the Jets victory that more satisfying.

    Never Again - Transportation

by Disappointed Commuter on 11/2/22MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford

Not sure how many times it has to be said and by how many people, but getting to and from Metlife stadium is horrific. It completely ruins the fan experience - whether you’re from NJ, NY, or elsewhere - public transportation, carpooling, etc. Even watching a game back, you hear the announcers making multiple comments about how obnoxious it is - we should be able to DO BETTER NEW YORK. Getting to the stadium on game day - from Penn Station, if you miss the 10:14AM train to Secaucus, you are waiting almost an hour (until 11:07AM) for the next train. Why? Leaving the stadium on game day - nowhere on the Metlife or NJ transit site does it state when the first shuttle leaving the stadium to Secaucus or Hoboken is (only estimates for the last train leaving). Out of fear for crowds (based on previous concert and game experiences), left at 3PM and had to wait 30min to board the shuttle from the stadium back to Secaucus. They then boarded the shuttle car by car instead of letting it fill like any other train might. Someone has to figure out why this is so bad and what other options are. No one can even enjoy being there because, at the end of the day, the whole experience is ruined by trying to enter and especially exit. Train schedules can be understood, but at least post them somewhere for people! Other stadiums have figured out a way to make ride-share services work, even massive airports have figured this out. Create a waiting area with zones and a line that filters people through instead of letting Uber/Lyft requestors wait for 30min only to end up dropped by a driver and left stranded. I am planning to drive 4 hours from NYC to Gillette Stadium for a concert just to avoid the horror of getting to/from Metlife. I have friends that also refuse to go to events because of the nuisance it causes. Just so disappointing.

    Go Jets!

by Lord Muchelney on 11/2/22MetLife Stadium - East Rutherford

Fantastic experience from the Tail gate parties to the Fireworks. If you have never been to an NFL game, you can't go wrong with a Jets Home game. The New Yorkers know how to have a good time. Everyone is friendly no matter who you support or the color of your shirt. Get there early and soak up the pre-game entertainment. Every seat at the MetLife Stadium has a great view of the field and the big screen replays are perfect for missed plays. J E T S Jets Jets Jets!
