About

In the long and distinguished career of Aaron Neville, Nature Boy is unique. A deeply satisfying suite of standards sung with remarkable sensitivity, Nature Boy is both a hallmark and a revelation: Aaron's feel for sweetly swinging jazz is pitch-perfect. He reinvents the Great American Songbook with a sure, soft touch; he lavishes his remarkable gifts on a project he calls "precious." Nature Boy is a classic—and classy—in every respect.
Throughout the sixties Aaron recorded for local Louisiana labels, but it wasn't until 1966 that he broke onto the national scene with "Tell It Like It Is," the plaintive ballad that went #1 on the pop charts, a song still considered a classic in the annals of American music. Issued on the obscure Par-Lo Records, the hit unfortunately coincided with the label's demise. With no follow-up and few royalties, Aaron's career stalled. Beset by demons both professional and personal, he struggled for the next ten years.

    Highly interesting experence for me.

by MTank on 8/6/12Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I have been at the Holywood earlier, but I did not know about the Holywood Bowl. This concert made it possible for me to experience the picnic and a good concert at the facility. The stage was unusually advanced with perfect lightning conditions.

    TROMBONE SHORTY!!!

by lunytune on 8/3/12Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I purchased tickets before they went on sale to public. I saw Trombone Shorty last year at the Newport Beach Jazz and he was sooo exciting. When I saw he was performing with yet another man I've been wanting to see in concert, AARON NEVILLE'S, this was a concert I couldn't miss. Orleans Avenue was a surprising pleasure. Never heard of them, but really enjoyed their style. Had a wonderful evening.

I enjoyed the entire concert. I was not familiar with Trombone Shorty's music, but was told by a friend (who lives in New Orleans) that whenever he is in my town I should go and see him. I am so glad I did. Now, I know for sure I will be attending the Catalina Jazz Festival since they have added him to the lineup. Now, I had heard some of Arin (?) Neville's music, but had forgotten about how good he and his brothers were. They were great and with Trombone Shorty's added touch just made the show that much better and they rocked the bowl. To top it off, the venue has always been one of my favorites.

A fond farewell and a budding legend

    by DaveS007 on 8/3/12Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I have been going to Neville Brothers concerts for decades and they were as masterful as always. They are the true ambassadors of New Orleans music and their one race message is what the world needs. As an added bonus, they had Trombone Shorty open for them. Everyone I spoke to after the show was determined to buy his music because he totally rocked the bowl with fantastic trombone and trumpet solos!

Trombone Shorty killed it. What a great musician and performer. Neville Brothers did not disappoint either. We had a fantastic time.

TROMBONE SHORTY GREAT! NEVILLE BROS MEDIOCRE

by MaryanneNewOrleans on 8/3/12Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I bought these tickets because I absolutely adore Aaron Nevile, his voice like whiskey and velvet, his healing songs and his breathtaking phrasing. I was delighted by Roddy Romano and his group, who did the first set. They got us off to a rousing start and were great, talented entertainers with lots of easy humor and musical energy. I was thrilled by Trombone Shorty: what a gifted entertainer, what a great showman, what wonderfully built and balanced sets. He was surrounded by great, sexy musicians, and they were all brilliantly entertaining, but never dominated his performance. . But my expectations of Aaron Neville and the Neville Brothers were disappointed. Too many cooks, no clear frontman, too much noise on stage. I could never truly hear Aaron's voice, even when he was doing the ballads he is so well known for. The sound balance was maddening. And the Neville Brothers, as talented as they are individually, are very casual about building their sets. I finally left early, as did quite a few of the audience. It was a big letdown after the fireworks of Trombone Shorty's group. Is Aaron Neville losing his voice? Does he have heart problems, Is he worn out from competing vocally with all of those instruments onstage? My guest and I were speculating through the performance, because Aaron did not look happy and he did not sound great.

Neville bring the funk, but Shorty steals the show

by hhillsbill on 8/3/12Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The Neville Brothers played what was billed as their farewell L A show(although that might not be entirely true) to a less than packed house, but that didn't stop them from bringing New Orleans to Hollywood. As second lines broke out throughout the bowl, the brothers thrilled the crowd with favorites like Pocky Way and Fiyo on the Bayou. It was Trombone Shorty, though, who really lit the fire earlier with a high energy set that showcased his triple threat of trombone, trumpet and vocals.Shorty has become the biggest star in New Orleans and it won't be long before he headlines the Bowl.

    Neville Brothers have been better

by CoolTP on 8/3/12Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The Neville Brothers seemed to be kind of phoning it in this night, however Trombone Shorty was awesome. He stole the show when he and his band played before the Nevilles and when he joined them on stage, he sparked new life into their set.

    Dancable Bands

    by munchkin2727 on 2/19/10Potawatomi Casino/Northern Lights Theater - Milwaukee

The concerts were amazing. Although both bands are highly danceable there was no dance floor available.
