Les Misérables on Tour

Theater producer Sir Cameron Mackintosh created his — dare we say it? — revolutionary new production of Les Misérables to commemorate the 25th anniversary of composer Claude-Michel Schönberg and lyricist Alain Boublil's musical, a rousing sung-through story of the Paris underclass' failed 1832 rebellion. After being seen around the world, Mackintosh's brisk new version opened in 2019 in the lavishly refurbished Sondheim Theatre (formerly Queen's Theatre) in London, thereby extending Les Mis' record as the West End's longest-running musical.

Mackintosh notably replaced the original production's famous revolving stage with a stream of projections derived from original drawings by Victor Hugo, upon whose 1862 novel Les Misérables is based. The current production stars Jon Robyns as Valjean, the tortured petty criminal whose pursuit by the steely and serpentine Javert (Bradley Jaden) drives the show. As the tragic Fantine, Carrie Hope Fletcher sings the show-stopping ballad "I Dreamed a Dream," and Shan Ako plays the equally ill-fated Eponine, who delivers the heartbreaking "On My Own." Surging ensemble numbers have been leaving audiences tingling.

About Les Misérables

The idea for a musical based on Victor Hugo's novel came to Alain Boublil during a performance of Oliver!, another show famously set among the proletariat. The concept album he recorded with composer Schönberg led to its first French stage version in 1980. Cameron Mackintosh's first English-language production opened in London in 1985, and Les Mis migrated to Broadway two years later. It has since been seen by more than 120 million people in 52 countries and 22 languages.

Set in the gritty streets of Paris during an explosive period of French history, Les Misérables conveys the poverty, danger and degradation of lower-class existence through magnificent songs such as "I Dreamed a Dream," "Bring Him Home," "One Day More" and "Master of the House." And the new production, according to The Guardian's Miriam Gillinson, could not be more contemporary, arriving as it does "at a time when all of us — in our own way — are hoping for a brighter tomorrow."

    Les Miserables

by Jetlagged65 on 2/22/14Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

A terrific version of this classic! Having seen professional productions of this show 5 earlier times, I have a good base for comparison. The male lead voices were incredible...easily as good as original cast recordings. The range of Val Jean was incredible; he slid effortlessly from false voice tenor to booming baritone. Javert was also equally powerful. While the women's parts are less blockbuster than these two men, all were well performed. The surprising voice was Eponine's. The Ravenscroft senior blew me away, not just with her voice but with her ability to sell her song. A fierce talent, this. In fact, from Gavroche to chorus, the locals more than held their own with the travelling pros. A winner!

    Les Mis fantastic as always!

by dc1977 on 2/21/14Duke Center for Performing Arts - Raleigh

This was my 5th time seeing Les Mis. I have seen it 3 times in Washington D.C. and once in VA. The theatrics, the music, and the performances are still moving, gripping, and bring me to tears every time. The cast in the NC show were wonderful. The best Javert I have ever seen. The main characters really were superior…Valjean, Javert, Eponine, Marius, Cosette, and Fontine. Although the Master and his spouse were very good, they were not the best I have seen. I strained to hear young Cosette and was a bit disappointed by Castle on a Cloud. The singing during Lovely Ladies was also difficult to hear. The Bishop's performance was fabulous, what a voice! I don't think I could ever dislike this show. It is a fabulous production, the music and the lyrics are incredible and give me goose bumps every time. Absolutely love it!

The play started out pretty slowly, but became fantastic after the first few scenes. I would not recommend it for children, though. There is strong language and a lot of sexual content.

by Lenetta on 2/21/14Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

As I left the theater I said, "My heart is full". This production lifted my spirits to a new height. I was moved by the clarity of the voices, the commitment each performer had to give me the best that they had. I was riveted and did not want it to end.

I've seen many broadway shows in NYC, (including Les Miz) and the Raleigh production was as great as any I've seen. ALL performers were outstanding. I live in NC and don't have to go far to see great shows.

Wonderful evening of fantastic music and musicians

by Wyckette on 2/20/14Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

the NC Theatre production was ambitious and well done. The actors and musicians were first rate. Schulman and Wagner as Valjean and Javert were expected to be the best of the best given the number of times they have performed their roles. But the supporting musicians, the elementary school children, the teenagers and local musicians who filled the other roles were magnificent. The young woman who played Eponine sang and portrayed this young star struck girl beautifully. Gavroche was very well played and sung by an up and coming young man.

    Les Miserables

by RetMarine on 2/20/14Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

I purchased tickets for my wife as a Christmas gift. This was my second musical, and I was not sure I would enjoy it as my first experience was "luke warm". To my surprise and wife's pleasure, I thoroughly enjoyed this show. The venue, the set, the music and the actors were all fantastic. I am looking forward to attending my next musical.

    Les Mis was Awesome!!!

by Anonymous on 2/20/14Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts - Raleigh

Fontaine's singing was a little too bright especially during I Dreamed a Dream. This song should be full of despair. I loved her last scene as the ghost! All of the other actors and actresses were terrific! I would definitely recommend it to others. Rating Overall: Amazing performances by all!!!

I was quite impress with the show. The kids did a fantastic job with their vocals. For only being height school and elementary age, it was extremely impressive. I would come back and see the sho again I only wish that the stage had a little more props.
