Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit Live in Concert

Jason Isbell was born into a musical family in Green Hill, Alabama, in 1979. His grandfather and uncle taught him to play various musical instruments, and the young musician started playing the mandolin when he was just 6. Destined for a life in the spotlight, he joined the Drive-By Truckers in 2001 at the age of 22. Isbell was a member of the Drive-By Truckers for six years before cutting out for a solo career. He released his first solo album, Sirens of the Ditch, in 2007. Some of his most notable work began when he assembled a group of musicians that would become known as The 400 Unit. The group consists of Sadler Vaden  of Drivin' N Cryin' on guitar, Jimbo Hart on bass, Derry deBorja on keyboards and accordion, Chad Gamble on drums and Isbell's wife Amanda Shires on fiddle. The 400 Unit is playfully named after the psychiatric ward of Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence, Alabama. Isbell and the band's first collaboration resulted in the release of the self-titled album Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit in 2009. In 2011, the collaboration continued with the release of Here We Rest. The track "Alabama Pines" was named Song of the Year at the 2012 Americana Music Awards. The Nashville Sound was released in 2017, winning the Grammy Award for Best Americana Album, with Isbell winning an additional Grammy Award for Best American Roots Song. In 2020, the group released Reunions, with the song "Be Afraid" hitting No. 5 on the Adult Alternative Songs chart. During the November 2020 election, Isbell announced he would make a charity album if Joe Biden won the state of Georgia. When this came to pass, Isbell worked to release the cover album Georgia Blue the following year. The album was a collaboration by various artists, and Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit contributed a cover of the Metallica song "Sad But True." Isbell has won four Grammy Awards between 2001 and 2007.

    Too old, too short

by Indyannie on 3/13/24Victory Theatre - Evansville

I did not realize that the audience would stand for the entire concert. When I stood, the folks in front of me were so tall that I still could not see. We did enjoy seeing the opening act. Our local newspaper published many photos of the concert the next day online so I was able to see Mr. Isbell and his band. A lesson learned I suppose (maybe request handicapped seating in the future?) but at $466.00— costly.

Great Band, Great Venue, Great Show!

by Danno on 3/13/24Victory Theatre - Evansville

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit delivered a rockin' performance by playing all the fan favorite songs in a fantastic venue. Ticket prices were reasonable. Sound in the theater was very good and seats are comfortable. Very happy Jason came to our small city again for his tour!

    So good.

by JHC on 3/13/24Victory Theatre - Evansville

The opening duo were so good. A husband and wife duo that were so calming with their beautiful acoustic music. Jason came out and hit the ground running with the 400 unit and they never stopped killing it the whole show. The best venue and show!

    Jason Isbell

by Tina on 3/13/24Victory Theatre - Evansville

Jason was wonderful but the music was louder than his voice. Tone down the music a bit so we can hear him better.

Great music & performance, but poor sound quality

by Patriciadt12@gmail.com on 3/12/24DECC Symphony Hall - Duluth

The performance was wonderful. Jason and the band were stellar. He played all the songs I wanted to hear plus some additional new ones that were great. I was very disappointed in the overall quality of the sound. Most of the instrumentation was way too loud, making it all distorted. Therefore lyrics were mostly indistinguishable. The best sound quality was the 2 songs were Jason played the acoustic guitar. Again, the performance was wonderful, but sound people need review. And I am not the only one that thinks this. Our whole group that was thereagree with this opinion.

    A great songwriter!

by Willyb on 3/11/24Embassy Theatre - Fort Wayne

My second Jason Isbell concert. Just as good and powerful. One of the best songwriters of this generation. The supporting artists around him were fantastic. Of course his ouput is getting large so he can play all my favorites but I got to hear enough of them!

    Outstanding

by Matt on 3/11/24Embassy Theatre - Fort Wayne

I've been listening to Isbell for 3-4 years and have been consistently impressed with his writing, his voice, and his delivery. After seeing him in concert, I was blown away. He is very much a professional who is comfortable on stage. I admired the way he showcased all of his bandmates.... Been to many a concert in my 68 years...he's in the top 5.

    Jason Isbell doesn't disappoint

by Dan G on 3/11/24Embassy Theatre - Fort Wayne

This was the 3rd time I've seen Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit in concert and they always put on a great show. The sound was fantastic and he does a great job of playing new songs from his album while mixing in older hits. If you get a chance to see them, don't miss it.

    Great Show at Embassy Theatre

by indy on 3/11/24Embassy Theatre - Fort Wayne

Isbell and the 400 Unit were tight as usual. Played a great selection of favorites from Weathervanes and Southeastern and more. Great to hear some older favorites like Speedtrap Town and Decoration Day. The surprise was the cover over When I Paint My Masterpiece. The Embassy Theatre is beautiful and a great venue for this show.

It's always worth seeing Jason Isbell live!

by Michele on 3/11/24DECC Symphony Hall - Duluth

Probably the best JI and the 400 Unit show we've seen - and we've been to over 20. Always a great concert with amazing energy and sound.

    Isbell @ DECC

by Jon on 3/10/24DECC Symphony Hall - Duluth

Best show I've seen in years. Jason Isbell is in a class of songwriters approaching Dylan, Young, Willie Nelson and at this pace Lennon & McCarthy. The band was very tight and the songs sent chills up my spine. DECC is a fantastic venue. No bad seats and the staff there was helpful, cheerful and kind. The whole experience was delightful. We will be at more JI & The 400 shows and more shows at DECC.

    Jason Isbell rocks Duluth

by Duluther on 3/9/24DECC Symphony Hall - Duluth

Jason Isbell saved the best show of this tour for his North Country fans. With his incredible band backing his newest songs and several gems from the past, Jason gave us his all. If We Were Vampires, 24 Frames, Decoration Day and Cover Me Up were highlights for me. I also loved the beautiful renditions of Strawberry Woman, Last of My Kind and Cast Iron Skillet. Everything from slide guitar to accordion accents made this a powerful performance that will be long remembered. I’m so grateful to have been there.
