About

James Taylor in Concert

James Taylor is the archetypal singer/songwriter, who helped create the template for the troubadour style that dominated the 1970s. And when he brings his blend of folk, pop, rock, and soul influences to the stage, it's like a part of history is unfolding before the crowd, with enough tuneful energy to generate some major good-time vibes. The five-time Grammy-winning, multi-platinum songsmith offered up tracks like "Fire and Rain" and "You've Got a Friend" to the collective pop-cultural consciousness in the '70s, and they've stayed there ever since. Of course, he's continued to make compelling music for many decades, and his shows are a grab bag of transfixing new tunes and beloved classics. Taylor's 2018 tour with his All-Star Band (not to be confused with Ringo Starr's similarly named group) also shows how much a crew of world-class players can bring to a classic catalog. Some of the most renowned musicians on the planet lend their talents to the band, including drumming god Steve Gadd, hotshot jazz pianist Kevin Hays, legendary saxman Lou Marini, and more.

James Taylor Background

James Taylor was born in Boston, but moved to North Carolina a few years later, and the bucolic settings of his childhood eventually informed the pastoral side of his songwriting in a major way. He learned guitar in his adolescence, soaking up folk and blues influences before hitting the coffeehouse circuit in the '60s. Before too long he was in Greenwich Village fronting a band called The Flying Machine, but he soon emerged as a solo singer/songwriter. His 1970 album ‘Sweet Baby James' became a game-changer for the whole '70s music scene. Alongside the likes of Carole King and Joni Mitchell, Taylor epitomized the thoughtful, acoustic-based ballad style that came to dominate the era, and ubiquitous hits like "Fire and Rain" and "Country Road" were central to that style. In later years Taylor showed his versatility by scoring smash singles with covers of R&B tunes like Marvin Gaye's "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" and Jimmy Jones' '50s hit "Handyman," and Taylor has never stopped finding fresh ways to bring his work to the huge audience that's been addicted to his music for decades.

    A Perfect Evening!

by Drummer Boy on 6/3/24Utah First Credit Union Amphitheatre (formerly USANA Amp) - West Valley City

Such a great concert! All the songs and great musicians in support of a master troubadour. James Taylor sings meaningful lyrics and doesn’t feel the need to scream at you or pump up the sound so loud you go home deaf. If you want to feel mellow and happy nothing beats James Taylor live.

    Outstanding

by ME on 6/3/24Utah First Credit Union Amphitheatre (formerly USANA Amp) - West Valley City

JT never fails to put on a great show. The folks in the band were top notch. I was dreading going to USANA; however, I was pleasantly surprised. The sound was really good, the video screens were good, and the crowds were not unrealistic. Parked off the grounds so I did not have to put up with the parking nightmare.

    ADA

by Jimmy on 6/3/24Utah First Credit Union Amphitheatre (formerly USANA Amp) - West Valley City

Last week, my wife and I went to the James Taylor concert, which was fantastic. While we enjoyed the event inside, we encountered challenges at the entrance. My wife, battling cancer and using an electric wheelchair, struggled with the tough gravel. The ADA parking was located north of the ticketing booth, while the main entrance for security was on the south side. When attempting to navigate the gravel, the wheelchair nearly tipped over, creating a distressing situation. Despite having fast lane passes, just before the gates opened, the fast lane was relocated to the south entrance. After not being able to work through the gravel, security kindly guided us through the gate on the north side. Despite the positive changes within the venue, we hope that UFirst will consider enhancing the experience for ADA visitors, I know we are few in the number of tickets but I truly hope for changes, after all my wife really wants to go more concerts.

I'm not a big concert goer, but my date loved it! We took blankets and bundled up on the grass and enjoyed good music. It was a good time. I enjoyed it and my date really liked it.

Lawn seat regulations are an obvious $ gouge

by Utah First Credit Union Amphitheatre is awful on 6/3/24Utah First Credit Union Amphitheatre (formerly USANA Amp) - West Valley City

James Taylor is wonderful. This isn't a review of his performance. It is a review of the recent changes to the venue made by its new owners. Utah First Credit Union Amphitheatre does not allow any seating to be brought in for lawn attendees. This is a change from when it was called USANA when you could bring in stadium seats or anything lower than 5 inches. All this so they can sell their $20-a-pop lawn seats that are at least 10 inches high. Sitting on the ground in front of someone who has shelled out the extra money for a chair negates being able to see the stage. Big thumbs down for nonsensical rules that are designed to get you to spend more money.

by Rene on 6/2/24Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

The Hollywood great place to see a concert. James Taylor was great. Love the stories and his sense of humor. Concession prices are extremely high. No choice for size of popcorn and I hate the kiosk ordering.

by Patton on 6/1/24Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I have to say this was the greatest performance with his All-Star band. This is the second time we have seen him and it never fails to amaze us how much better he gets every time. Can’t wait to see him again. It’s always a delight and a pleasure to see him, perform all his greatest hits, he’s one of a kind And the greatest of all times thank you for all you do.

    Good music, terrible parking.

by NanSea on 6/1/24Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

James Taylor played great music. He has a great personality and introduced all of his backups and band members. If you have a shuttle in your area, take it. Parking was terrible and very expensive.

    He never disappoints!

by CB, KC and Tups on 6/1/24Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

We’ve seen Sweet Baby James several times and just love him! (At least twice at the Bowl.) His songs, his personality, his dry wit. He seems to really enjoy what he does. The back-up singers and musicians were amazing!
