About Harlem Gospel Choir

Harlem Gospel Choir on Tour

Raise your hands and praise the Lord when the Harlem Gospel Choir comes to town. An internationally renowned ensemble known for big voices and an even bigger spirit "inspired by God to be even more inspired," Harlem Gospel Choir packs all the energy of a mass choir into a nine-piece ensemble that includes two roof-raising contraltos and four titanic tenors. Expect an energetic night of hand-clapping, foot-stomping excitement as the choir performs a repertoire that includes gospel hits both old and new, traditional music and the occasional pop hit. The choir has toured extensively across the United States and abroad, becoming the first American gospel group to perform in Australia, New Zealand, China, Russia, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Serbia, Slovenia, Samoa, Thailand, Burma and Morocco. They have performed for three Presidents (Barack Obama, Jimmy Carter and Nelson Mandela), two Popes (John Paul II and Benedict XVI) and the United Nations General Assembly. And they have recorded with Keith Richards, the Chieftains and Trace Adkins, among many others.

About Harlem Gospel Choir

Entertainment-industry veteran Allen Bailey formed Harlem Gospel Choir on January 15, 1986, which also happens to be Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. The choir's nine-piece touring groups, accompanied by two instrumentalists on drums and keyboards, draw from a pool of some 40 members. They divide and conquer by touring the world while maintaining an all-you-can-eat Sunday-brunch residency at Sony Hall in Manhattan's Times Square. A typical show includes Kurt Carr's "In the Sanctuary," Israel Houghton's "You Are Good" and Kirk Franklin's high-octane "Looking for You," along with gospel standards such as "Oh Happy Day" and "Amazing Grace." The choir also does astounding things with Beyoncé's "Halo" and traditional numbers such as "When the Saints Go Marching In" and "Every Time I Feel the Spirit." As Allen Bailey modestly told Ohio State University's The Lantern about this tuneful spiritual vessel, "We only have one superstar in this group and that's Jesus Christ, superstar."

    I absolutely enjoyed this show!

by Patricia on 1/20/22Sony Hall - New York

Amazing experience, great venue. Always wanted to go to Harlem to see it and never had a chance. Was visiting NY from Miami and was staying in Times Square, so the location was perfect for a tourist that had only few days in the city. Beautiful show. Mix of faith and talent! Loved it!

    Harlem gospel choir

    by I. B. on 12/30/21Sony Hall - New York

It was very difficult finding Sony Hall. The building says Parliament in bigger wording. Sony hall was very small close to the curb on police barracades. But after I found it it was a very good concert.

    Noisy, crowded and amped

by SavvyFairre on 12/27/21Sony Hall - New York

This was not what I expected. Although our tickets had a row and seat number, when we arrived we found it was standing room only. The venue was packed and not well-ventilated. The volume was much higher than needed for such a small room and I wished I had brought earplugs. I’d like to hear this group in better circumstances. I left at intermission.

    Very disappointing concert!

by AllSungOut on 1/21/20Sony Hall - New York

The sound was so loud it was deafening. Amplification of voices in that beautiful Cabaret theater was unnecessary. Too much audience participation - almost half the show was spent calling people up on stage to perform. We came to hear the choir, not amateurs! We didn’t enjoy this modern razzmatazz gospel music at all. The only really good song was “Oh Happy Day” sung by a member of the audience. Many people left before the concert was over. There was a lack of foot-tapping and general enjoyment in the audience.

    Great singing, mediocre food

by CM from Boston on 1/8/20Sony Hall - New York

The singers are very talented and energetic, and did their best to ensure everyone had a great time. But the food and drink were disappointing. The food at the buffet was cold, bland and uninspired. I was hoping for “soul food” such as ham hocks and greens - nope. And two abysmally awful mimosas set me back another $50, on top of the $100 I already paid for 2 tickets. Not a good value for the money.

by AMcS on 12/28/19Sony Hall - New York

Whole family enjoyed the concert Great venue Good food, slightly pricey. Definitely worth turning up early - before doors open at 6.30 especially if you have a group and want to sit at a table. The choir were great- very talented first half could have had A couple more songs but second half was excellent

    Very Good!!!

by Daniel Obes on 9/25/19Sony Hall - New York

The people receive us in very good mood. They were in total attencion untill the finish of the show. The buffet was of good quality and enough for every one, and the show itself was warm and unforgetable.

    Uplifting Experience

by Cookie on 9/25/19Sony Hall - New York

I truly enjoyed the show. I treated a friend to the event as a birthday gift. We both enjoyed the praise and worship. It was very high in energy and left a positive upbeat from the crowd. The atmosphere and the hostess were very friendly and pleasant. The buffet food was very good a had great selections. I wish the show was a little longer. In the near future, I intend to go again during the Christmas season.

    Show and food is good

by Shontell on 5/8/19Sony Hall - New York

The show was really good. The venue is very old but that what gives it character. The food was pretty good. My favorite was the short rib. The performance was excellent. I loved the fact they song contemporary gospel so I knew the songs. Altogether it was a nice show.
