Edmonton Oilers History

The origin of the Oilers goes back to 1972, when they were one of the founding franchises of the World Hockey Association. Once the league folded in 1979, they were one of four teams absorbed into the National Hockey League. It didn't take long for them to establish dominance in the league, reeling off five Stanley Cup Championships in seven years. They are tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins for the most championships since the NHL-WHA merger.

The Oilers of the '80s were a phenomenal dynasty with a roster that reads like the Hockey Hall of Fame: Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Paul Coffey, Glenn Anderson, Grant Fuhr, Jari Kurri, plus a stellar supporting cast. Gretzky scored 92 goals in 1982, breaking Phil Esposito’s record for number of goals in a single season. He also recorded a record 215 points in 1985. During his time with the Oilers as centre and team captain, Gretzky led the team to four Stanley Cup championships (1984, 1985, 1987, and 1988). By the time Gretzky finished his time with the Oilers, he held or shared a total of 49 NHL records.

In all, the Edmonton Oilers have appeared in the Stanley Cup Final seven times.

Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place

NHL superstar Connor McDavid and NHL legends Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier opened the doors to the spectacular Rogers Place in downtown Edmonton in October 2016. McDavid and his Edmonton Oilers bring excitement to Rogers Place nightly, with the statue of The Great One standing guard just outside. The state-of-the-art Rogers Place replaced the aging Rexall Place, and resulted in an explosion of business and residential growth in downtown's ICE District.

    Great day!

by CindyR on 3/22/22Rogers Place - Edmonton

We took our two grandsons to the Oilers game on a Saturday afternoon. I thought the club did a great job of entertaining everyone. The music was great, the games were fun and we had several staff giving us stickers because it was their first game. The parking situation was really good and the arena is beautiful. We’re from Calgary, but we had three Oilers fans. Thank you for a great afternoon!

    Capitals in The Capital

by Abe Simpson on 3/12/22Rogers Place - Edmonton

Saw the Oilers win 4-3 in OT. Historic night with the potential for Ovechkin to get goal number 767. That didn't happen but Nicklas Backstrom scored 1,000th point. The Oilers franchise since joining the NHL got win #1500. Flexible pricing of ticket allowed me to buy the ticket at a price that was $40 cheaper than if the game was on a Friday or Saturday night. That was a plus. I an older consumer, so like and appreciate having printed tickets. I would like it if people buying tickets the day of the game for an event to have a will call option at the arena to get a printed ticket provided they have ID and the credit card used to buy the ticket(s) and confirmation number of the ticket order. I used to like the PDF that ticketmaster had. A fine evening out in a modern arena, I understand that it could be viewed as expensive for many which may price out many who give a thought to going to games.

    Favourite Hockey Arena

by LKH on 3/8/22Rogers Place - Edmonton

Love the steel band, wide open concourse, variety of concessions.. Often sit in the drink rail seats as they are so convenient but had extra wide aisle seats this time and were very comfortable. Granted a lot of the experience has to do with the folks around you but I've been fortunate and not had people constantly leaving their seats during game time

    Friendly and helpful

by Dorrydavis on 2/11/22Rogers Place - Edmonton

We took Mom to her first NHL game (she’s a hockey fanatic)! She has mobility issues but we were able to get a wheelchair which made the whole experience so easy. One of the people who help as you go downstairs helped us so much. He stored the wheelchair and brought it to us when we came back. Made the whole event so much less stressful. Oilers lost but she’s a Vegas fan so she was happy! Only issue was that when I looked for tickets, Box Office was the first site to come up and I thought it was Rogers. Cost me double and they were soooooooo rude!!! Lesson learned!!

    Disappointed

by Oil super fan on 1/30/22Rogers Place - Edmonton

In accordance with Alberta Health Services this game sucked, no refreshments or food was allowed and will not be going to a game until all these absurd mandates are abolished. It’s time that people start realizing that this is no longer about protecting us.

    No energy

by Cally on 1/25/22Rogers Place - Edmonton

I been to several oilers games pre covid. My first since the pandemic. No energy or lack of it in the building. Maybe it was the no food or drink. Did not want to scream as hard under a Mask and get thirsty. I was so glad for the game to be over and to get a drink and to remove my mask We have season tickets and my husband refused to go What a waste of 15000! We will not be renewing our tickets

Oiler Game Wed Dec 1, 2021

by Golden Boy on 12/6/21Rogers Place - Edmonton

The complete lack of crowd control and organization at the main entry (Ford Hall) was appalling. The mass of Oiler's fans were slowly "herded" towards the vaccine check-points and the ticket check-point with no sense of organization. No semblance of an orderly lining procedure was evident; just push toward the kiosks. It took 45 minutes from door entry to sitting in our seats! I trust that this organizational chaos can be eliminated and repaired for future events.

Was not warned of obstructed view when purchasing tickets.

by Phil on 11/23/21Rogers Place - Edmonton

We bought our tickets through the mobile application and drove 6 hours there and 6 hours back to watch the game. We ended up getting an obstructed view. Our view was blocked by the CBC and MSNBC camera men. The camera men told us once we got there that the tickets should have been listed as obstructed view when purchasing, but they were not. I double checked the other upcoming games to see if there was any warning on the app before purchasing tickets for the seats we had before I wrote this review and there’s no warning. It sucks driving 12 total hours to have your experience hindered by cameras waving around in front of you and trying to dodge them in order to get a view.

    Great time

by Ld on 11/21/21Rogers Place - Edmonton

We all had a great time, we quickly went through security and found our seats. The game was awesome, and exiting the parking lot was quick but a bit of a challenge maneuvering around construction.,

by OldtimeOilersfan on 1/21/20Rogers Place - Edmonton

Oilers game was great.Facility wonderful. Sub zero outside -26 on game day. Disappointed that in this northern facility we couldnt find any hot drinks. Coffee tea hot chocolate? ?? Very few food choices as well. Did not meet the hype as advertised.Basic burgers/pizza. 1 spot had pulled pork and brisket. Thats what we ate. With 1 beer 1 water it was $48 . Eat before or after the game not here.

    Wonderful seats!

    by k. on 1/3/20Rogers Place - Edmonton

These seats had me right in the action behind the net where the Oilers scored 7 goals for an exciting win! Great way to spend New Year’s Eve! Highly recommend Oilers games to any sports fan. Lots of interactive games in the arena to fill the time when there is a break in play. Great atmosphere!
