Edmonton Oilers History

The origin of the Oilers goes back to 1972, when they were one of the founding franchises of the World Hockey Association. Once the league folded in 1979, they were one of four teams absorbed into the National Hockey League. It didn't take long for them to establish dominance in the league, reeling off five Stanley Cup Championships in seven years. They are tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins for the most championships since the NHL-WHA merger.

The Oilers of the '80s were a phenomenal dynasty with a roster that reads like the Hockey Hall of Fame: Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Paul Coffey, Glenn Anderson, Grant Fuhr, Jari Kurri, plus a stellar supporting cast. Gretzky scored 92 goals in 1982, breaking Phil Esposito’s record for number of goals in a single season. He also recorded a record 215 points in 1985. During his time with the Oilers as centre and team captain, Gretzky led the team to four Stanley Cup championships (1984, 1985, 1987, and 1988). By the time Gretzky finished his time with the Oilers, he held or shared a total of 49 NHL records.

In all, the Edmonton Oilers have appeared in the Stanley Cup Final seven times.

Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place

NHL superstar Connor McDavid and NHL legends Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier opened the doors to the spectacular Rogers Place in downtown Edmonton in October 2016. McDavid and his Edmonton Oilers bring excitement to Rogers Place nightly, with the statue of The Great One standing guard just outside. The state-of-the-art Rogers Place replaced the aging Rexall Place, and resulted in an explosion of business and residential growth in downtown's ICE District.

    Horrible

by Not a fan on 12/1/22Rogers Place - Edmonton

Seats so small that's fully grown man could not comfortably sit in then. Stuck in front of a family who did not control their children. Basically sat there and had the kids kicking my chair and screaming in my ear for the entire first period when I said enough and left.

by Berge on 11/22/22Rogers Place - Edmonton

What an amazing game. Kept us on the edge of our seats. Even tho we were pretty much 4th from the top, we were able to seee everything. Definitely not a bad seat in the stadium.

    Oilers vs Dallas

by THUNDERKING on 11/8/22Rogers Place - Edmonton

The game was overall not good, only because we lost. But I always enjoy being in the building and seeing other fans having the same energy as me! It’s always a great experience and just seeing my favourite players in general makes me excited! Happy to be a oiler fan!

    Oilers Preseason game

by MM on 10/10/22Rogers Place - Edmonton

Terribly expensive from top to bottom. It is impossibly hard as a university student to afford to attend these games, due to the astronomical ticket prices and prices for food and drink. Although every once in a while I may be able to convince myself to use my student loans to afford these tickets, I can not imagine how discouraging it must be for the vast majority of our wonderful hockey-loving Edmonton community members, who can not attend games because they simply do not have the money. It is truly disappointing.

by Shawn on 5/2/22Rogers Place - Edmonton

We went to 2 Edmonton Oilers games, both were so exciting from beginning to end. Roger's Place is an absolutely beautiful building. Seating anywhere in the arena is a good seat. I recommend to go check it out, to anyone.

    Disappointing Accessibility

by MGM on 5/2/22Rogers Place - Edmonton

Purchased tickets for Oilers v Canucks for entire family including 14year old visually impaired son. Figured that with todays tech there would be an option for real-time play by play so he could follow the action with us on a tactile board we made for him. All feeds had min off min delay making it impossible to follow in real time. He enjoyed the atmosphere and the concession snacks but the game itself was (really exciting game for the sighted people in our crew) not able to be enjoyed. Really thought Oilers and NHL could do better with tech availability in the modern world.
