Jazz-funk collective Deep Banana Blackout brings an all-out party to every stage they invade. In the same booty-shaking vein as legendary bands like Parliament and Tower of Power, these top-notch musicians squeeze every last drop of funk out of their deep grooves while fans get up and get down to the infectiously fun beats hammered out by bass, drums, and congas. Firebrand frontwoman Jen Durkin moves and grooves right along with ticket buyers on the group’s extended jams, rocking her dreads back and forth while she takes each song to the next level with gritty, soulful vocals. With a beat that just won’t quit on crowd favorites like “Bump and Sway”, “Tug”, and “Groove Is Here”, Deep Banana Blackout brings the funky tunes rhythm-lovers crave.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Deep Banana Blackout began in 1995 as a way for friends from two different Connecticut funk bands to run through old soul standards. These jam sessions produced an undeniable chemistry, and the newly-formed octet abandoned their other projects to pursue Deep Banana Blackout full-time. Following a few years of local gigging, the group cut their 1999 debut album Live in the Thousand Islands. With studio and live recordings entertaining listeners around the world, the group continues to build their dedicated following with the energy of their fun and funky live performances. After touring with the Allman Brothers, splitting bills with Maceo Parker, and turning heads at the Newport Jazz Festival, the band still brings the same ecstatic energy to each and every venue they play.

But, I have to comment on Strange Machines (a local Boston Band) who opened for them. I saw them over a year ago open for John Brown's Body at the Paradise and thought they were talented. The other night I was amazed how far they had come. The crowd that was coming in late to see Deep Banana wanted more but couldn't get it. Please have them back and give them some more stage time. Strange Machines is on the rise!

DBB are true veterans of funk music, and each one of them is as genuine as they are talented. A solid rhythm section, tight horns, and soulful vocals by Jen Durkin. My first time to the Sinclair, and I will be back!
