Don't miss the brand new show from Cirque du Soleil, Banana Shpeel, with performance styles inspired by vaudeville, that blends comedy with tap, hip hop, eccentric dance and slapstick, all linked by a hilarious narrative that ignites a succession of wacky adventures.
Propelled by crazy humor and intense choreography, Banana Shpeel plunges us into the world of Schmelky, a brash, ambitious producer who is trying to put together a spectacular variety show. His world is populated with sidekicks, dancers, singers and novelty acts - and a bunch of badly behaved clowns who crash the auditions spreading chaos in all directions.
Banana Shpeel is a limited engagement, and runs through August 29, 2010.

Banana Schpeel was great fun and loads of laughs, but it's more what it advertises - Vaudeville - than the traditional dramatic, acrobatic, dreamy romance-language storytelling event we're used to. This was my 6th cirque show and while I'd recommend it to a friend, if I knew more about it in advance I definitely would've have chosen to see Ka instead. While Schpeel was great, I don't think it merited the same ~$100 price tag. Still, worthwhile if you're in the area, and always at a high caliber of polishedness you'd expect from Cirque.
I have seen many Cirque du Soleil shows, both in Vegas and the ones that travel, and this was by far the worst! Bad story, weak characters, and overall, not entertaining at all!
Very entertaining, but a bit too much of the clowning "chat", another act or two would have made a big difference, even if it was just musical , dancing or even just slapstick. I wasn't expecting the acrobatic skills that you find in the big top shows, the acts they had were great, just too much of the 2 host characters.
I read that there were some last minute changes to the book and it showed. The circus acts are amazing and some of the dance routines were very good but the comedic skits reminded me of bad "benny hill."
the talent was good there was just not enough of it. Too much slap stick comedy. dancing was impressive but not enough variety.
I read many of the other reviews posted before I attended the last Chicago show. For the most part, they were all very positive, but some made the complaint that the show was too widespread, random, and ultimately a failed potpourri concoction of vaudevillian style circus acts. I would just like to say that IMHO I think that suited the show well. It was supposed to be random and mayhem. There was supposed to be a lot of slapstick humor and stuff that just didn't seem to fit, but still entertained you. Great show. Definitely worth seeing for those who inhabit the city it moves to next!
This show was great! It was very funny and had my 10 year old son laughing so hard he couldn't sit still. He said this was the best thing about our trip to Chicago for his birthday!
It was not what I expected. The clowns were terrible and hard to understand.
I went into the show without knowing much about it and found it to be a disappointment compared to the one other Cirque show I've seen. My relative from out of country was disappointed as well. The parts I enjoyed were few. The only reason we stayed for the entire show was to get our money's worth. Otherwise, I do applaud the effort and commitment of the creator along with all the members, but it was mediocre for me & my relative.
