Chicago Blackhawks History

The Blackhawks were founded in 1926 and were part of the "Original Six" group of franchises, which constituted the NHL from 1942 until league expansion in 1967. The club won Stanley Cup Championships in the 1933-1934 and 1937-1938 seasons, but success proved largely elusive over the next two decades, except for one appearance in the final in 1943-1944. The 1960s signaled a rebirth for the franchise, with future Hall of Famers Stan Mikita, Bobby Hull, Pierre Pilote, and Glenn Hall leading the way. The Blackhawks defeated the Detroit Red Wings in the 1961 Stanley Cup Final, collecting their third championship.

The addition of eventual Hall of Fame goaltender Tony Esposito ahead of the 1969-1970 season marked the start of an era during which the team earned a Playoff berth in 28 consecutive seasons. In 1971 and 1973 the Blackhawks reached the Stanley Cup Final, losing both times to the Montreal Canadiens. More excellence followed in the 1990s, aided by the likes of Ed Belfour and Jeremy Roenick, as the Blackhawks finished with the league's best record in 1990-1991 and made the Stanley Cup Final in 1991-1992.

By selecting their eventual captain Jonathan Toews third overall in the 2006 NHL Draft, the Blackhawks began stocking up on young talent, also adding Patrick Kane first overall the following year. They returned to the Playoffs in 2008-2009, and in the very next season, Chicago defeated the Philadelphia Flyers for their first Stanley Cup Championship in 49 years. They added championships in 2013 — beating the Boston Bruins in a thrilling series that included three overtime games — and 2015, topping the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games.

Chicago Blackhawks at United Center

Home to the Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Bulls, United Center — which opened in 1994 — is the largest NHL arena in the United States, with a capacity of 19,717 for hockey games. The idea for the arena was created in 1988 by William Wirtz, owner of the Chicago Blackhawks, and Jerry Reinsdorf, majority owner and Team Chairman of the Chicago Bulls. The United Center has hosted the Stanley Cup Finals three times: in 2010, 2013 and 2015. The Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup Championship in 2015 against the Tampa Bay Lightning at home in the sixth game — the first time since 1938 that the franchise clinched the Cup in Chicago.

    Club Is Meh

by KLS on 11/30/23United Center - Chicago

First, our seats were INCREDIBLE. Right behind the major network cameras, but row 7, so higher up with the railing right in front. Couldn't have asked for better placement. I don't know why they call these seats club. We had one lady, one time, come by and ask if we needed anything. I wouldn't consider that in seat service. Also, did you know club level in STL comes with fully free food, drinks, and alcohol for the same price? There are literally no perks of these seats other than where they are in the arena.

    Best first hockey game ever

by Nh on 11/27/23United Center - Chicago

This was a family outing with eight of us from age 5 to over 70. Everyone had so much fun and got right into the excitement of the game. Been suggested to have it be an annual event.

    No Blackhawks pale ale. 😱

by JD on 11/27/23United Center - Chicago

All I kept hearing about was this special Blackhawks pale ale, that’s until I asked my Club seating waitress for one. Her reply, we don’t have any, we are all out. I said, “but the game hasn’t started”. She said, “we haven’t had it for 7-10 days.” A little weird to say the least for as much as they shove it in your face with advertisements. Also, since when is there a line 40 deep for men’s washroom…what is this world coming to. Game was fantastic! Service and selections are subpar to other venues we have been to recently.

    Quieter!

by DRL on 11/22/23United Center - Chicago

Always enjoyed the live games, but sometimes the music was simply too LOUD! Glad to see it appears the UC turned the volume down to a more reasonable level. 😊

    Just OK

by Dave on 11/21/23United Center - Chicago

First, the Blackhawks need to get better before I will spend $600 for two of us to see them play. Secondly, the ushering was very poor. A number of groups of young men were coming from seats in some other location and sitting in our section 102. One group of 4 who looked like they were 14 or 15 took seats right near the Hawks bench in row 5. I reported it to the usher, who seemed confused about what to do. She eventually went to the row and very gently asked them to leave, which they did, and came back 5 minutes later. I asked again, and the same thing happened. Not until the third time when security came and they left for good was it resolved. By this time, the game was almost over. When I pay $600 for two seats, and some young men come in who have paid much less, it is quite irritating.

I took two talented guys and their wives out to the Blackhawks game last Saturday night. I want to hire these guys and I think going to the game was a great way to share the Chicago experience. Room for Improvement

by Hawkgirl on 10/24/23United Center - Chicago

We pay extra to sit in the club level for better service. The Lexus Club is great but the bars outside of the club really could use extra help. They should have lines just for specialty cocktails. It requires more time and someone who’s just trying to get a basic drink is waiting forever. We literally had to get out of line because we didn’t want to miss the national anthem. Other than that I would’ve given a five star just because I do love the club level.
