The Black Jacket Symphony Live in Concert

Founded in 2009 by guitarist J. Willoughby and his partner and technical director Jason Rogoff, the Black Jacket Symphony comprises several groups of musicians dedicated to recreating a specific classic album. Though their live shows are built around performing covers of classic rock albums, in an interview with The Daily Times, Willoughby says that the Black Jacket Symphony is not a tribute band. Willoughby noted that the difference is that the Black Jacket Symphony is all about the music they're playing and not about the musicians themselves. Various Black Jacket Symphony ensembles have recreated an estimated 38 classic albums over the course of their careers.

For shows in 2018, they focused on seven classic recordings in particular -- The Beatles' Abbey Road, Queen's A Night at the Opera, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Damn the Torpedoes, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, Journey's Escape, Led Zeppelin's Led Zeppelin IV, the Rolling Stones' Let It Bleed, and AC/DC's Back in Black. The Black Jacket Symphony's fanbase has grown over the years well beyond Birmingham. They now have a strong base in both Alabama (Huntsville, Montgomery, Mobile, and Chattanooga) and Kentucky (Lexington), while their local fanbase remains strong.

In 2014, to mark Black Jacket Symphony's fifth anniversary, Willoughby and friends presented a trio of concerts at the WorkPlay theater in Birmingham, playing music that also commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Fab Four's U.S. debut, focusing on the albums Rubber Soul and Revolver.

In 2014 for an article on Alabama.com, Willoughby was asked about one of his memorable moments with the Black Jacket Symphony. He said, "Being on stage in front of a sold-out crowd at the Alabama Theater, which is a venue I put on a very high pedestal. The encore of the evening was 'Goodnight.' It's a song that I have been singing to my daughter every night before bed, and she was in the crowd of 2,200 people. The moment suddenly hit me, and I quickly had to learn to sing with the biggest lump in my throat that I have ever had."

    Black Jacket Symphony, The Beatles

by Dr. Steven K. Webb on 4/29/24BJCC Concert Hall - Birmingham

The Black Jacket Symphony performed Abbey Road, The Beatles, during their first set, and the Beatles Greatest Hits during their second set, and ended with an encore of "Hey Jude"this past Friday night at the BJCC Concert Hall in Birmingham AL, and it was beyond fantastic! I have now seen the BJS perform six times: 1. The Eagles 2. Queen 3. Led Zeppelin 4. Gun N' Roses 5. The Bee Gees 6. The Beatles ...and I have loved each and every show very, very much! I most certainly will go see the BJS many times again in the near future because they never ever disappoint and are so incredibly talented.

Fantastic performance! Note for note with personality!

by Draig Port on 4/29/24BJCC Concert Hall - Birmingham

Loved this concert! The BJS always put on a great show. I moved to the USA from north Wales and visited Liverpool every two weeks so I’ve seen a fair few Beatles acts in my time. But this performance stands out from 4 piece tribute acts as it’s a note for note homage to complex songs mastered for albums on multi-tracks. This is something you can only get with having as many great performers as BJS handpicked for this show, playing a range of instruments. The vocals were great and sounded similar without straining to be impersonations. We had to leave a little bit before the end but hopefully didn’t miss too many songs. We had guessed the show running time, but hadn’t seen the BJS at this venue before and didn’t account for a long intermission which with hindsight was probably due to it being a theater and wanting to sell concessions. We’ll know for next time and look forward to seeing another BJS show again soon!

    Best Beatles Yet

by Mr Brain on 4/29/24BJCC Concert Hall - Birmingham

We have been to almost 100 BJS shows, including 3 Beatles shows. This on was the best yet. The band had so much energy and really seemed to enjoy themselves. That always makes for a great show. My only complaint was that I thought Jay's microphone should have been louder. Thanks to the Black Jacket Symphony for all you do to bring us this great music.

This was my first time seeing Black Jacket Symphony. Really enjoyed the concert. They played The Beatles Abbey Road album, plus the 2nd set was some of the greatest hits. The sound, great musicianship and light show was awesome. Great show!

    It was ok

by Jen on 4/23/24Saenger Theatre Mobile - Mobile

I would have loved to actually have heard Purple Rain performed by the symphony. But that is not what we got. It was a Prince impersonator and a band. Costume design was at best mediocre. The music was good, vocals were good, performance (dance) was not so good. I do not want to sound mean but I was disappointed.

    Fantastic Experience

by JaimeJo on 4/23/24Saenger Theatre Mobile - Mobile

This was my first show to see Black Jacket Symphony. It was Purple Rain. It was amazing! The whole group was mesmerizing. The musician selected to be the front man (Prince) was absolutely spot on with his performance. The rest of the group were all very talented musicians as well. Will definitely be following future performances by them.

The concert was very good. It was a shame that the lead singer did not play guitar. That was my only disappointment.

    Good concert, poor venue

by Birdnerd on 4/23/24Saenger Theatre Mobile - Mobile

First and last time attending a concert at the Saenger Theatre in Mobile. Acoustics were terrible for this show. It was difficult to hear clearly. Seating is tight for tall people and the seats in balcony are not staggered so I couldn’t really see the singer through much of the show. On the positive side, another great performance by Black Jacket Symphony.
