The Black Jacket Symphony Live in Concert

Founded in 2009 by guitarist J. Willoughby and his partner and technical director Jason Rogoff, the Black Jacket Symphony comprises several groups of musicians dedicated to recreating a specific classic album. Though their live shows are built around performing covers of classic rock albums, in an interview with The Daily Times, Willoughby says that the Black Jacket Symphony is not a tribute band. Willoughby noted that the difference is that the Black Jacket Symphony is all about the music they're playing and not about the musicians themselves. Various Black Jacket Symphony ensembles have recreated an estimated 38 classic albums over the course of their careers.

For shows in 2018, they focused on seven classic recordings in particular -- The Beatles' Abbey Road, Queen's A Night at the Opera, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Damn the Torpedoes, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, Journey's Escape, Led Zeppelin's Led Zeppelin IV, the Rolling Stones' Let It Bleed, and AC/DC's Back in Black. The Black Jacket Symphony's fanbase has grown over the years well beyond Birmingham. They now have a strong base in both Alabama (Huntsville, Montgomery, Mobile, and Chattanooga) and Kentucky (Lexington), while their local fanbase remains strong.

In 2014, to mark Black Jacket Symphony's fifth anniversary, Willoughby and friends presented a trio of concerts at the WorkPlay theater in Birmingham, playing music that also commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Fab Four's U.S. debut, focusing on the albums Rubber Soul and Revolver.

In 2014 for an article on Alabama.com, Willoughby was asked about one of his memorable moments with the Black Jacket Symphony. He said, "Being on stage in front of a sold-out crowd at the Alabama Theater, which is a venue I put on a very high pedestal. The encore of the evening was 'Goodnight.' It's a song that I have been singing to my daughter every night before bed, and she was in the crowd of 2,200 people. The moment suddenly hit me, and I quickly had to learn to sing with the biggest lump in my throat that I have ever had."

    Black Jacket ALWAYS satisfies!

by FanSlowhand on 11/15/11Von Braun Center Concert Hall - Huntsville

The BJS performance of "Dark Side of the Moon" left nothing to be desired. The 'album' set was perfect, note-for-note, and the second set ("Greatest Hits") included the top songs we wanted to hear. David Anderson and Allen Barlow were both technically proficent and emotionally enthusiastic in their recreation of David Gilmour's guitar and vocal performances. The other musicians are near perfection in their roles. The lighting and graphics enhanced without overshadowing the music and the Mark Smith Concert Hall at the Von Braun Center was an excellent choice for this show. It was large enough to handle the crowd and yet remained an intimate setting for our enjoyment. The sound system was as good as any I've heard. Anyone who has a chance to hear Black Jacket Symphony should do so without hesitation. I've seen all 10 of the album recreations by BJS (several more than once) and have NEVER been disappointed!

Pink Floyd Dark Side was awesome

by Wingnut94 on 11/15/11Von Braun Center Concert Hall - Huntsville

If you closed your eyes you felt like you were at a real Pink Floyd concert. Music was spot on as well as the vocals. The lead male and female singer were great, the lead female was spot on with an awesome voice. All of the band played true to Floyd. It was awesome and can't wait tot go see them do Zepplin.

The Black Jacket Symphony was Terrific!

by Jethorough on 11/14/11Von Braun Center Concert Hall - Huntsville

The entire band was a smorgasbord of phenomenal talent. Huntsville's Dave Anderson was especially notable in this performance. Performing occasionally with the Atlanta Rhythm Section, but more often filling his week with one-man performances around town, and the personal friend of hundreds, he was in his element featured at the lead position. Pink Floyd would have loved it!

    Unbelievable

by Anonymous on 11/14/11Von Braun Center Concert Hall - Huntsville

Just an unbelievable performance, note-for-note perfect recreation of Floyd's classic album. My 16 year old son enjoyed the show as much as I did; we already purchased tickets to see the Black Jacket Symphony's rendition of Zeppelin IV.

BJS a rare treat in Huntsville

by ElzS on 11/14/11Von Braun Center Concert Hall - Huntsville

I love the symphony. My husband loves Pink Floyd. The Black Jacket Symphony was our compromise and it was a good one! Dark Side of the Moon was incredible. We both loved it. Best thing we have seen or done since arriving in Huntsville. Definitely worth the money as they played and sang their hearts out. Talented, talented people! Highly recommended. We will be back with our kids for Led Zepplin in the spring.

Black Jacket Symphony nailed Pink Floyd

by jpwrangler on 11/14/11Von Braun Center Concert Hall - Huntsville

The Black Jacket Symphony nailed the Dark Side of the Moon. They sounded just like the original. The lead vocals, the female vocals on the Great Gig in the Sky, the Sax playing, and the guitar solos were unbelieveably original sounding. After the intermission they performed some of their greatest hits. My only complaint was that it did not last long enough.

    Totally professional and unforgettable performance

by qlcal on 11/13/11Von Braun Center Concert Hall - Huntsville

Dave Anderson is a local artist and was lead performer in the production. He as well as all of the other artists were spot-on in their presentation of Dark Side of the Moon. Looking forward to seeing their performance in March when they return to Huntsville to do Led Zeppelin!

    MUCH better than expected

by Jorsher on 11/13/11Von Braun Center Concert Hall - Huntsville

The "symphony" part of the band's name threw us off. We were expecting your typical symphony, although if I had searched for them beforehand or looked at the image next to the name it would have been pretty obvious it wasn't your typical idea of a symphony. We were still excited to go and I was sure that I'd enjoy it, but was happy when I got there and saw the usual rock band stage. The venue was nice, it was easy to find seats, and in/out of the building was easier than I expected with the number of people. The band was fantastic. I have listened to this album album more times than I can count and know it pretty well. They covered it better than I could have imagined. From the laughing and talking in the opening track "Speak to Me," to the vocals in "The Great Gig in the Sky," to saxophone in "Money," and the children coming out for their part in "Another Brick in the Wall" -- it was all replicated with amazing accuracy. They were able to surpass my already high expectations, and I will be looking forward to seeing them again next year.
