The Black Jacket Symphony Live in Concert

Founded in 2009 by guitarist J. Willoughby and his partner and technical director Jason Rogoff, the Black Jacket Symphony comprises several groups of musicians dedicated to recreating a specific classic album. Though their live shows are built around performing covers of classic rock albums, in an interview with The Daily Times, Willoughby says that the Black Jacket Symphony is not a tribute band. Willoughby noted that the difference is that the Black Jacket Symphony is all about the music they're playing and not about the musicians themselves. Various Black Jacket Symphony ensembles have recreated an estimated 38 classic albums over the course of their careers.

For shows in 2018, they focused on seven classic recordings in particular -- The Beatles' Abbey Road, Queen's A Night at the Opera, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' Damn the Torpedoes, Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, Journey's Escape, Led Zeppelin's Led Zeppelin IV, the Rolling Stones' Let It Bleed, and AC/DC's Back in Black. The Black Jacket Symphony's fanbase has grown over the years well beyond Birmingham. They now have a strong base in both Alabama (Huntsville, Montgomery, Mobile, and Chattanooga) and Kentucky (Lexington), while their local fanbase remains strong.

In 2014, to mark Black Jacket Symphony's fifth anniversary, Willoughby and friends presented a trio of concerts at the WorkPlay theater in Birmingham, playing music that also commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Fab Four's U.S. debut, focusing on the albums Rubber Soul and Revolver.

In 2014 for an article on Alabama.com, Willoughby was asked about one of his memorable moments with the Black Jacket Symphony. He said, "Being on stage in front of a sold-out crowd at the Alabama Theater, which is a venue I put on a very high pedestal. The encore of the evening was 'Goodnight.' It's a song that I have been singing to my daughter every night before bed, and she was in the crowd of 2,200 people. The moment suddenly hit me, and I quickly had to learn to sing with the biggest lump in my throat that I have ever had."

    Too loud

by Bill on 5/13/24Knoxville Civic Auditorium - Knoxville

I think the band and the singer were excellent, but I couldn't really tell. It was too loud to hear them. I left before the first half was over.

    Black Jacket always ROCKS

by Music Fan on 5/7/24Harrison Opera House - Norfolk

I've seen Black Jacket Symphony several times, several different teams. Being a rabid guitar fan, I'm usually all about the MUSIC. The Zep shows, Van Halen, even the initial Prince team ~ BEST EVER. This show was quite different for me ~ the May 3rd show in Norfolk VA is a different Prince team, which I knew going in. This show was still absolutely amazing, but for very different reasons than my norm. This show, my focus and great enjoyment came not as much from the music, but mostly from the GREAT performance by Rahbi, the vocalist ! He OWNED this show, without a doubt !! It was just sheer FUN. The only 'negative' was the sound mix, the dude on the sound board is either new or was napping, or I don't know what, but the bass was sooo heavy it overwhelmed several songs. At any rate, BLACK JACKET SYMPHONY is always always worth going to see, yet again, worth the few hours drive time and an overnight hotel stay.

    AMAZING show!

by Justine227 on 5/6/24Harrison Opera House - Norfolk

This was my 4th BJS and the best so far. The band is always fantastic, but that lead singer was over the top fabulous! Great energy and a wonderful showman. Everything exceeded expectations...and we knew the BJS was doing to put on a great show based on previous tributes.

Incredible Energy. Prince would be proud!

by CAPTB on 5/6/24Harrison Opera House - Norfolk

I bought last minute tickets and am so thankful I did. The show was amazing. The hourish long replay of Purple Rain was spot on. The energy from the lead singer and band was infectious. The follow-on play list hit all the charted songs and some that didn’t that all were fantastic. I’ve been trying to see Black Jacket Symphony for years and this show worked for my schedule. I’ll try harder to see them going forward and already have tickets for their Elton show. Don’t miss this show.
