  • 70's Soul Jam 2/25/11 Chicago

by WOLFCHAZ on 2/27/11Arie Crown Theater - ChicagoRating: 1 out of 5

The Acts were quickly rushed off stage. While performing they were told to get off the stage. These great performers should be allowed to give their best performance. I was expecting at least 4-5 songs sung completely through. You very rarely have an opportunity to see Icons such as these. In addition the sound system was horrible. The Light person didn't respond to the Dramatics request to turn up the house light on the audience. Also the stage setting was dull. I was very, very disapointed in the entire concert in the way it was handled. In the near future, I hope the other following events will be better maintained.

I attended the 70's Soul Jam featuring the Manhattans, Heatwave, Dramatics, Stylistics, Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. I was somewhat disappointed because the microphones were of poor quality and most acts consisted of only 4 songs (at least give us 5 or 6). I was really disappointed with the Dramatics because their first three songs were not completely performed and they did not look groomed. I think the Manhattans could have been better if the mics were working properly. I really enjoyed the Stylistics, they were so smooth, looked good, and sounded great. They gave a memorial performance and next time I hope they sing "Payback is a Dog". I also enjoyed Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes. I think Heatwave sounded great but looked awful. The checkered jackets with a blue glitter strip down the back and on the pockets looked like something for the circus. Their stylist should be Fired! It's not only important for performers to sound great but grooming is important, especially when people attending the event have put forth an effort in their appearance. I would rate the show as Average. Last year's show was much better.

I seen the concert at aire crown theater. It was a great concert, but it was only 3 hours long. I wish each band would of played longer and I wish they would allow alcohol during the show. Other than that it was great.

  • 70's music is classic!

by kepp on 2/19/11Beacon Theatre - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

I should have bought 2 sets of tickets-one for theafternoon concert and one for the evening!- I didn't want to go home! I felt so wonderfully entertained and appreciated! Everyone looked and sounded wonderful: just as I remembered them. The Dramatics were just a little less than stellar but everyone else ROCKED THE HOUSE! Can't wait for a return engagement!

The show was great but we had viewing problems because the ushers kept moving people in front of us. This happened throughout the first hour and a half of the show. That means this happened through the Manhattans, New Birth, Blue Magic and The Dramatics. They were on for a very short time each. That is a minor complaint.

  • 70's Valentine Concert was awesome

    by Richie33 on 2/15/11Beacon Theatre - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

All five groups proved they still got it. Wish they were given more time each to perform, Especially Blue Magic. Stylistics was only group to perform for more than a 1/2 hour. Simply, we wanted more.

  • Romantic, old school soul jams at their finest!

by PaulaZ on 2/15/11Beacon Theatre - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

My guy just LOVES 70's soul jams so when I saw this show coming up for Valentine's Day I just had to get tix and this concert did NOT disappoint. The first half gave us the stylings of the Manhattans, New Birth, Bue Magic and the Dramatics while the second half was all Stylistics. Hearing those soul favorites was the perfect kick-off for a romantic Valentine's Day and the audience was enjoying every minute of it. Some groups had some new additions to their lineup but each had original members among them. Of particular note was Blue Magic who added fun and spice to a phenomenal set , and the new lead singer for the Stylistics whose rich falsetto did honor to one of the most recognizable voices of the era.

  • Betcha By Golly Wow: The Ultra-Smooth Stylistics

by MilesDavis on 2/15/11Beacon Theatre - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

There is no doubt in my mind that the Stylistics were the most professional and thoroughly worked out show that night. They were magnificent! The harmonies, choreography, and their dress were near perfect. Almost all the songs were nostalgically familiar, along with the layered textures of their arrangements. The other groups were pretty good but not what I would consider great. However, they presented important steps in the evolution of popular music. Everything from the tastefulness to tackiness were represented along the way down memory lane. A highlight leading up to the main act was the wonderful lead singing of Blue Magic. They looked fine and sounded great. Seeing the Stylistics was ultimately the most inspiring live performance I have seen in many years. There were nuances in the instrumentation very rarely heard from digital instruments. We heard dynamics and clarity from every note that was played or sung. The precise lighting helped also. Finally, it is amazing that they could keep going so strong for so many years.

I bought two tickets for my mother and her husband for her 50th birthday. When they came back all they did was rave and talk about how great the show was!! My mother told me that it was such a great "blast from the past" she felt like she was back in her twenties!!! Im glad i purchased the tickets for them, it was a great gift!

  • Fantastic, Fantastic from start to finish!!!!

    by monique43 on 2/15/11Beacon Theatre - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

This concert was wonderful. Every group was fabulous. Felix Hernandez of Kissfm was a great MC. I listen to him all the time on Sundays. These groups had the energy of teenagers but the voices of mature soul. I went alone, something I have never done. But I was right there grooving and singing to the music with everyone else. I felt comfortable and right at home. New Birth was great, they sang songs I forgot I used to love. The Manhattans were good, but didn't sing as many of my favs as I wished they would have. The Dramatic, and The Stylistics are by far the very best groups. And Blue Magic did a wonderful job as well, when they sang "sideshow" I felt like I was that lovesick little girl from long ago.

  • Almost Perfect

by TheMuffin on 2/15/11Beacon Theatre - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

My husband and I have been wanting to go to an oldies show for a long time. We just kept putting it off. But this time we could not pass it up because New Birth was going to perform!!! OMG, I was over the moon when I imagined hearing them sing my favorite song (Dream Merchant) live and in person!!! The show started exactly on time, which was a major thrill. The first act out was the Manhattans. They sang a few songs, including their big hits, "Shining Star" and "Kiss and Say Goodbye". Next to perform was New Birth. I could barely contain my excitement. When the band began to play "Dream Merchant" I was almost delirious. However, my excitement was quickly deflated when my favorite song was butchered!!! Why they sang an incomplete version of one of their biggest hits, I will NEVER understand. I truly felt cheated by that. But I must say they redeemed themselves when they sang "Wild Flower". That song is beautiful and timeless and they worked it out!!! By this time I was almost over my disappointment when Blue Magic began to perform. Now they didn't disappoint at all!!! They sang all of their hits and even did an extended version of "What's Come Over Me", another favorite of mine. They gave me chills. Next came the Dramatics. They were fabulous. The audience went crazy when they sang "In the Rain". They sang all their hits as well. Last to perform were the Stylistics. They did not disappoint at all!!! Every song you remembered and loved was sang on that stage. They were AMAZING. When you thought it was over, they had only just begun. They ended the show with their biggest hit, "You Make Me Feel Brand New". The show lasted nearly three hours. It was a day to remember and I'm so glad I got to see these talented performers. If I could change one thing, it would be that New Birth perform "Dream Merchant" the way it should be performed.

  • Simply Fabulous

by martyluv on 2/15/11Beacon Theatre - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

The 70's concert took me back to my growing up days where I heard a song on the radio whether it was the stylistics, the manhattans and would go and buy the 45s. They were coordinated, moves, steps, vocals, it was breathless.

Thought the show was good! It was nice to take a visit down memory lane- :-) I was inpressed with all the artists ability to sound just as good as they did back in the 70's. Leaving the beacon theater was a little kaotic (The staff seemed a little disorganized) By all in all no regrets..
