Cuba Gooding was good. That version of The Manhattans was disappointing but the Sylistics were AWESOME. Will see them over and over again
Truly "Old School" , coordinated suits and wonderful harmony. Choreography was "tight" and "Top Drawer". Great band timing and sound was on point. Covered every song on their play list. Some I remembered and some I had forgotten. Their portion of the show was long enough and each member of the group performed with ease. The new members sounded like the original members especially the lead Tenor. Me and I gentlemen friend had a great time. Staff was courteous and helpful.
The Stylistics and The Manhattans were excellent I would definetely recommend seeing them.
I was disappointed they were not the original Manhattens they did not sound good at all. The Stylistics were pretty good though.
These guys were great in the 70s but like fine wine have aged to be even better. Thanks for a terrific show and making us feel young by viewing your show.
If it were not for the Stylistics, the show would have been a complete flop. As an Old School fan, when you expect to see the best and that's what you are use to, that's what you expect. You should get your money's worth. The so called Manhattans were the worst!!! Please do not use them as an opening act. What happen to Gerald Austin???? Why even have the Main Ingredients and only have the main ingredient. The Stylistics saved the day. They are the BOMB!!! Smooth as ever, band is super TIGHT! So, I would not recommend this show unless there are other groups who can really serve as an opening act. The audience was not really happy. Thank you Stylistics for saving what could have been a terrible evening.
Stylistics, Manhattans and though Cuba Gooding was MC, they all were "Magnificent".
Overall, I enjoyed myself as my husband and I were out on a date together. Initially, I was disappointed that the group Main Ingredient was not there, only Cuba Gooding Sr. even though it was billed as Main Ingredient - Cuba Gooding Sr. Also, he didn't sing enough songs. He only performed about 20 minutes, should have been longer. Second disappointment was with the Manhattans. I didn't realize that Gerald Alston was not lead singer for them anymore so that took away from their performance. Plus, the guy with the deep voice, Blue was not there. He did all the rapping in their songs so I was not feeling them at all but they did an alright job. Now the Stylistics turned it out!!!! Even though Russell Thompkins was not singing lead, the new guy was just as good or better. They sang all the songs that were popular back in the 70's. As I said before, I enjoyed myself and I will return to the Sound Board for other events as my husband and I like the venue/layout. We had very good seats. I would not go see Cuba Gooding Sr. or the Manhattans again. I would definitely go and see the Stylistics again. They put on a very good show...people were standing on their feet!
Well worth the money. All the groups sounded and moved great, especially since I had expected the performers to be past their prime. Anyone would enjoy this professional show.
The experience was great — enjoyed each group as they came onto the staged and performed . Me and the wife had a great time . Only one complaint — waiting in the vestibule for over 1 hour for a show opening door that was supposed to be at 7pm-in which it didn't until 8pm.
The 70's Soul Jam Valentine's Concert is by far my favorite concert of the year. I look forward to it every Valentine's Day and it never fails to deliver. It's one night where 70s soul comes to life. This year was amazing. Lenny Green of WBLS' Quiet Storm was the MC and he did a great job, keeping the show moving, taking people down memory line with 70's references, and who wouldn't enjoy his soul DJ voice? New Birth kicked it off and they were great, they went through their hits with spirited energy. They closed out their set with the funky "I Can Understand It." The Emotions were glittering in their outfits and kept the energy going with upbeat tunes like "Boogie Wonderland" and "Best of my Love." Their lead singer interacted with the audience a lot, thanking us for the awards they received in '77 and saying that we were their Valentine. Harold Melvin's Blue Notes were amazing, despite the loss of Teddy Pendergrass and Harold Melvin, the group hasn't missed a beat, and they have kept the legacy going. Their dance moves were as smooth as their vocals. They closed out with their hit "Wake Up Everybody," which one of their members noted was the motto they live by every day. The Dramatics kept the energy going. They did all their slow and fast hits, and their lead LJ Reynolds even did his new cover of the Marvin Gaye classic - "Come Get To This." He closed out with someone rarely seen at the 70's Soul Jam - he got everyone up on their feet to party with them before they left as they performed "Get Up, Get Down." It was an awesome moment. The Stylistics closed it out and they pulled out all the stops. They did their uptempo numbers - "Can't Help Falling in Love" and "Rock n' Roll Baby" plus all of their classics that have made them so memorable. They also did "Peek A Boo" which I've never heard them do live. Also, they were very smooth not just in terms of vocals and choreography, but also their red suits. This was a show not to be missed and it has me counting down to next year. Well done!
I throughly enjoyed all the groups in the show except the first group. I loved the Stylistics, Dramatics, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes as well as the Emotions. In addition to all the voices sounding great over 30 years later, the choreography enhanced each song. There was definitely some sound distortion during some of the performances that interfered with appreciating the vocals.
There was a woman sitting behind me singing every word to every song, at the top of her lungs, in a voice that sounded like a cat with bronchitis. She ruined the show for me
The show was fantastic. Everyone was on their feet moving to the sweet sound of music as they went down memory lane. Each group was unforgettable. They all had so much energy. Each and every group gave their all and put their entire being in every note they sang. I loved the Stylistics who had a truckload of hits and memories to match. We will be back the next time a show like this is available.
The 70's Soul Jam was awesome. I look forward to this show every year and it never disappoints. It's nice to remember good music. Please don't stop bringing this show back.
whole the show was excellent i wish they gave new birth more time
It was a birthday present for my mother! She and my dad had a fantastic time and great front row seats. With a snow storm outside, inside was a hot party full of wonderful memories!!!
I took my husband, Ross, to the show as part of a Valentine's weekend in NY. It was freezing outside and snowing a little, so it was wonderful going into the Beacon Theater which was so warm and inviting. I was most looking forward to listening to the Emotions and they did not dissappoint, but I must say that it was a wonderful walk down memory lane with the rest of the groups as well. Considering the obvious age of the group members, some walking slowly onto the stage with canes and walkers, their voices were still as strong as they were when the records were created. It also reminded me of how gentlemanly, ladylike, poised, and elegant performers were then. The focus was on bringing the finest music and entertaining performances. It was nice hearing such wonderful voices and lyrics without watching someone holding onto their private parts, twerking, or cussing. Just a few other comments ... I highly recommend the Beacon Bar next door prior to the show. Also, an announcement should have been made prior tthe show about the use of photography. Some people were trying to film performances and it took ushers too long to try to stop them, whichwas very distracting during the performances.
This is my third year at the concert! I wouldn't miss it for the world! It's the perfect ending to a Valentine's Day weekend. All the performers were good but the Blue Notes and Emotions were stand outs .The Stylistics stole the show (as they always do) with a polished, first class performance! Seeing them is worth every penny of the ticket price!
The 70s Soul Jam was an evening of great music and great memories. The audience was enthusiastic throughout the night as we were treated to an endless stream of hits from New Birth, The Dramatics, Blue Magic, Harold Melvin's Blue Notes and The Stylistics. What a nice way to relive the memories of the days when music was a combination of meaningful lyrics and pretty melodies.
