About

The quintessential backstage musical comedy classic, 42nd Street is the song and dance fable of Broadway with an American Dream story and includes some of the greatest songs ever written, such as "We're In The Money," "Lullaby of Broadway," "Shuffle Off To Buffalo," "Dames," "I Only Have Eyes For You" and of course "42nd Street."

Based on a novel by Bradford Ropes and Busby Berkeley's 1933 movie, 42nd Street tells the story of a starry-eyed young dancer named Peggy Sawyer who leaves her Allentown home and comes to New York to audition for the new Broadway musical Pretty Lady.  When the leading lady breaks her ankle, Peggy takes over and becomes a star.  With a book by Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble, music by Harry Warren, and lyrics by Al Dubin, this sparkling new production is directed by co-author Mark Bramble and choreographed by Randy Skinner, the team who staged the 2001 Tony Award-winning Best Musical Revival.

Great singing and dancing (especially the tap-dancing), and many funny moments. Very entertaining and we left the venue singing!

We think the 42nd St talent was good., but - - -

    by augie65 on 2/16/17Adler Theatre - Davenport

    - - - we would have liked to heard it without distraction. An annoying woman sitting right behind us hummed and sang softly every song, distracting us from the cast performance. We paid money to hear the performers, not an amateur audience member! The dancing was OUTSTANDING. Without this distraction, we would have given an overall rating of 5 Stars.

    Tap into 42nd Street

by ShowPeople on 2/16/17Adler Theatre - Davenport

A very well done performance of a great classic show. The production values were very high and a talented cast brings it. The costumes were beautiful, well designed and appropriate. The orchestra was spot on. But it's the dancing that stands out above everything, and boy can these people hoof! Full on tap routines lasting up to 4 minutes done with precision and grace. Such a treat to see talented people doing what they do best. All in all a great night of entertainment at the theatre. Bravo!

A must see if you like musicals and dancing.

This play sure does have great tap dancing and music throughout the entire play. Some of the songs kept going through our heads long after the play was over and we were home....very catchy tunes. And the dancing! Oh, gosh. This is an excellent play to take children to that are taking tap lessons. It would certainly inspire them. I go to the theater often and have seen many musical plays and this one has to be in my list of the top three.

    42nd street was a joy

    by 1207Dancer on 1/31/17Tennessee Theatre - Knoxville

My Husband and I attended the 2 o'clock performance, the show was wonderful, the dancing energetic, flawless and so much fun to watch. My husband is quite accomplished in the tap dancing field (albeit a little less active in it since he hit his 70ies). He was like a kid in a candy shop watching the excellent dancing, his heart was right up there with each of the dancers, go it you can totally worth the ticket price!

42nd Street was worth the detour!!

by Vioutch on 1/31/17Tennessee Theatre - Knoxville

I didn't really know what I committed to, and I almost had to 'drag' my husband. However, I was completely surprised by such an amazing show and so much beauty, professionalism and perfection of the whole troop. The first Act was a bit too long, but I guess there was not enough dancing/tapping to my taste. The second Act was stunning: perfection, synchronization and amazing legs!!! My husband thanked me for having dragged him there. I would see the same show again and again!! Thank you thank you for bringing such quality to our TN theater.

The singers & dancers were excellent. It's hard to believe that there are so many talented people available to put on a first class performance in a touring company.

Don't know when I have enjoyed a musical any more than this one! From the moment the curtain opened to the very end it was enchanting in every way. So nice to be truly entertained and not have to listen to constant profanity.

    Granddaughter was mesmerized!

    by pplewis3d on 1/31/17Tennessee Theatre - Knoxville

I bought tickets to the Saturday matinee performance for my granddaughter's 9th birthday. She loves singing and dancing and would have been thoroughly entertained without the story or without the incredible old theater. Coupled with the amazing performances and the exciting ambiance, her first time experience could not have been better. I gave her a synopsis of the story and some background on the beautiful Tennessee Theater which helped her to appreciate it even more. The whole afternoon was a memory maker which is what I was going for with my granddaughter.
