About

With quick-witted dialogue and a playful score, 1776 dramatizes the impassioned debates of Philadelphia's Second Continental Congress. As George Washington sends updates from the military front, patriots John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson attempt to persuade the 13 colonies to separate from British rule. Based on the letters and memoirs of America's founding fathers, this classic, Tony Award-winning musical showcases the principles, pride and determination that influenced the birth of our nation.

A wonderfully entertaining play with a good touch of history. Makes me want to read more about that amazing period in our history. I saw it because I read a review that started with: "All members of Congress should see this show." So true!

The play was well done. I enjoyed it. The seats were horrible, however, not worth the price, partially behind a column. I would recommend that Ticketmaster indicate where columns impede views on their seating chart.

    History comes to life!

    by c1parker on 6/1/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

This was a highlight of my trip to DC. It was great to see history acted out in front of my eyes instead of just reading about it (which I had plenty of with all the local museums.) Plus it was incredible to watch a play in such a historic setting. They also have special pricing for people under 30, which was a big plus.

    1776 - Amazing Production!

by SunriseSongbird on 5/24/12Ford's Theatre - Washington, D.C

I really hope this amazing production is brought back again, preferably for a long-running, regular performance schedule!! I have seen this musical many times, and this was absolutely the best production of it I have ever seen! The acting, singing, and direction were all stellar...the stage and lighting design showed such grace and ingenuity...sheer perfection! It is difficult to do justice to such a complex, multi-faceted, dialogue-rich piece as this beloved musical; I was simply stunned at how great this production was. Very funny, touching, and thrilling...this team hit every note perfectly. I loved every minute of it, and heard VERY positive comments from other patrons as well. I would have gone back to see it again if all the performances were not sold out!! Being able to see it at Ford's Theatre added immensely to our experience; it made us feel privileged to witness our founding fathers passionately going about the business of forging a new Nation in such an historic and intimate venue. My hope is they will add long-running, regular performances so that more Americans may get to see this stunning production in this lovely theatre; both are well-tended and much-appreciated treasures of our National heritage. A very classy production...a wonderful experience!

It was very good and took you back in time. It made you go back to those times and really think of what it was to live back in 1776. Very good depiction of how the declaration of independence came to be.

    1776 Magnificent

by Frxz on 5/6/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

Although the performance itself was magnificent and unforgettable, the venue, Ford's Theater, greatly added to the entire experience. Every song was delivered with gusto, feeling, and pizazz, and very actor was excellent. Having seen many performances, and the movie many times, this ranked among the best. I would absolutely recommend , and I want to see it again!

    1776 @ Ford's is fabulous!

    by Chris1776 on 5/5/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

A perfect way to bring alive the people behind our country's birth - their foibles, passions, politics, wit and incredible courage. I took my two college student children and they loved the music, witty script, and super acting. Thank you Ford's Theater, cast, crew, and musicians.

    Great way to learn history

    by Theaterlover24 on 5/5/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

What better place to see 1776 than at the historic Ford's Theater? We arrived early enough to tour the Lincoln museum before the play. While this is not the best musical I have ever seen, it is lively and entertaining enough to sustain one's interest. The best part is that it presents our nation's history as entertainment, while staying true to the facts. When we took a walking tour of DC the next day, we knew so much more about what we were seeing.

We had a great time, as did the grandparents. We were surprised at the age range in attendance. Only bad part was the line to the women's bathroom was very long!

Being my favorite musical, I went in knowing that I would be tough on reviewing the show. The actor playing John Adams to me was a bit too staccato with his singing, but, knowing what I do about the real Adams, it played well. Overall, the cast was magnificent. The set was not what I would have expected, but worked wonderfully given the space on the stage. The cast fit well together and met my expectations in regards to the people they were portraying. Costumes were wonderfully designed and showed the distinct differences in all the delegates. For a small orchestra, they played well and had a perfect instrumentation for the score.

    night and day

by dessadjklvnqefiovnqi on 5/3/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

I had seen this movie (first time I've seen it live) several times when I was a boy and my sister was at William and Mary as they showed it at the visitor center and I always enjoyed it. In fact I am quite sure it is one of the things that sparked a life-long love of history in me. Ford's Theater is an incredible place to see a show (first time for me) as it just oozes history. That being said this is one of the most uneven plays I've ever seen. The first act was absolutely steller- I was really blown away- but I could not wait for the second act to end! Its almost as if the two acts were written by different people! The actors did well, although Rutledge and Jefferson don't have the greatest voices, but the tunes and pace of the second act are just not very good.

This was an exceptional play, I would recommend to anyone, children as well as adult. The actors/actresses were spot on and exceptional. John Adams and Ben Franklin were so good one forgets they are actors.
