Justin Hayward on Tour

While a Moody Blues concert is an epic event, a Justin Hayward solo show — which might contain some of the same songs — offers fans a more intimate experience, one that's equally entrancing in its own way. Hayward wrote and sang the bulk of The Moody Blues' biggest hits, from "Nights in White Satin" to "The Story in Your Eyes" and "Your Wildest Dreams." And he's usually happy to bust out some of his Moodies tunes in his solo shows. But he's also maintained a solo recording career ever since the 1970s, full of melodic gems that you won't get to hear at a Moody Blues concert. And it's the combination of those two elements that really makes a Hayward show a special occurrence unto itself. When you're hearing Hayward deliver his material in a more direct manner, sometimes telling the stories behind the songs, it makes for a unique connection with this rock legend.

Justin Hayward in Concert

The world knows singer, songwriter, and guitarist Justin Hayward best as the driving force behind The Moody Blues, one of the most innovative bands of the classic-rock era. With Hayward at the helm, the Moodies moved from an R&B-inflected style in the mid-1960s to a more psychedelic sound later in the decade, making history with their marriage of classical music and rock on the 1967 milestone Days of Future Passed and prefiguring progressive rock in the process. And though he led the band through multiple comebacks and evolutionary phases in the subsequent decades, Hayward also created an artistic space all his own outside of The Moody Blues. He released his first solo album, the appropriately titled Songwriter, in 1977. And ever since then, though he's had long periods where he concentrated on being a bandleader, he's never closed the door on his solo career. Whenever he's ready for a more personal statement, Hayward steps away from the Moodies to resume his path with his own music.

    Wonderful evening

by Di on 6/19/23The Paramount - Huntington

The Paramount theater was a perfect place to see Justin Hayward. The acoustics were very good, there is not a bad seat in the house, he did great songs and seemed into the music and experience also. It was a totally enjoyable and memorable experience!

    Switch it Up!

by Bob on 6/19/23The Paramount - Huntington

It was implied that Justin Hayward was headlining, with support from Christopher Cross. With all due respect, Hayward's work with the Moody Blues far eclipsed that of Cross's. Just sayin'. So I was disappointed to see Hayward open, and do a too short set. Cross was great, don't get me wrong, but I was there mainly to see JH.

    Ageless

by Bob R on 6/19/23The Paramount - Huntington

JH was great, voice is still strong, had a great arrangement of musicians with him. CC was also very good and had a great band and singers as well, only negative was the mix was off and drowned out CC's voice at times.

    Should have read the reviews

    by Salem Hobbit on 6/19/23

Justin Hayward never disappoints and his show on 6/17 at Lynn Auditorium was no exception. Every email I received from Ticketmaster leading up to the event gave the impression that Justin was the headliner. I'm not a big Christopher Cross fan so I arrived at the venue around 8:15, start time was listed as 8:00, and was horrified to see Justin was already performing. I then thought perhaps the artists were alternating each night but after reading some reviews it looks like CC is actually the second performer every night. I give the JH half of the show 5 stars and CC 3 stars for an overall of 4. I'm being kind to CC since I left when he was probably about half way through.

    Wrong Star went Last

by Rick on 6/18/23The Paramount - Huntington

This was a split billing with Justin Heywood and Christopher Cross. For some reason Justin Heywood went first. In my opinion Heywood was a much bigger star/musician and influence on the music world with years of longevity. Also a huge influence in progressive rock. As you can see, the concert was supposed to feature Justin Heywood as his picture was featured and n the listing. I was very disappointed to see Heywood as a warmup for a much less known musician. Furthermore, although Cross's band was okay, Cross had no voice that evening and left a lot of the singing to his backup vocalists. We left after just a few of his songs because the performance was sub par. Heywood and his group played very well and were a pleasure to listen to. I wish they had come on last.

    Huh???.., Cross gets top billing?

by Moody’s fan on 6/17/23The Paramount - Huntington

Was very surprised that Hayward was not top billing. Even more so after the show! Cross is good. Hayward is legendary and eminently more famous- with good reason. Many folks left after Hayward was done.

    Always a Great Show

by Ellen B on 6/17/23The Paramount - Huntington

As always Justin Hayward left the crowd happy with his song selection. His voice is still soothing and he sounds great especially with the added help of his phenomenal flute player and keyboard player.

    Great Concert

by DavidL on 6/17/23The Paramount - Huntington

Venue was nice but seating wasn't very comfortable and the auditorium was cold. Justin Hayward was fantastic! Great stage presence and accompanied by Mike Dawes (who also opened for the show), the performances were all first rate. Justin sang a number of the Moody Blues classics which everyone loved as well as some of his solo works. Interesting thing was the concert was combined with Christopher Cross and everyone thought it was strange that Justin went first (maybe he had places to be) since he was clearly the headlining act. Sadly, a number of people just walked out and left immediately before and during Christopher Cross's performance which seemed disrespectful. Christopher Cross played well but I can't claim to be a huge fan of his music--I came for Justin Hayward who excelled and left no one disppointed. Highly recommend!

    BEST NIGHT

    by C. H. on 6/17/23The Paramount - Huntington

The Paramount is the best venue! Everyone is so friendly & welcoming. No matter where you sit, you can hear clearly & the seats are comfortable. The food & drinks are superb!! The owners think of everything! I have a food allergy & they accommodated me with gluten free options. Justin Hayward & band was incredible! Took me back in time. Christopher Cross singing Laura at the end brought me to tears! Love that we got to enjoy both groups! Thank you! Best night!

    Justin Haywood

Saw Justin Haywood at the Paramount in Huntington. Perfect venue for him and his small band. Thoroughly enjoyed every minute as both his singing and storytelling were perfect.

    A bit disappointing

by MikeLomo on 6/17/23The Paramount - Huntington

The fact that he actually opened for the "real star," Christopher Cross, said a lot. I've been a long time fan, but he needed to do a full show, as did his old bandmate, John Lodge. This set seemed rushed and somewhat unenthusiastic. However, at his age, I guess it makes sense. By the way, we left after Cross did 2 overproduced songs.

    Justin!

    by DCB3 on 6/17/23The Paramount - Huntington

Double bill with Christopher Cross. Justin came on first. His voice is still clear, on pitch and as full as ever. The compact band sounded great. Unfortunately, would have liked to see him perform all night.

    Dream come true

by #1Moody Blues Fan on 6/5/23The Danforth Music Hall - Toronto

My wife and I travelled from Europe to come and see the show. I have been passionate (fanatical) about the Moody Blues' music since I first heard them at age 13. This obviously included Justin Hayward's voice and his beautiful and thoughtful compositions. I retired early this year and as I have never had the opportunity to see Justin or the band, I decided that it is now or never. My retirement lump sum came in handy and we made arrangements to see the show in Toronto. It was an expensive undertaking but worth every cent. My well worn vinyl records, CD's, and downloads came alive. Justin's beautiful rendition of Tuesday Afternoon early on in his programme was mist in the eyes stuff. A wonderful, wonderful experience and the time flew past. All the same, it would have been nice if the playlist included more of the great Moody Blues hits. Some of the enchanting but lesser played songs could perhaps have made way for all-time favourites such as Lovely to See You, and an unplugged version of Ride My See-Saw. These are the very melodies that motivates someone like me to travel 7,000km to see an idol. Still cannot understand why the tickets said the show starts at 18:30 when it actually started around 20:00.

    Great show!

by John on 1/29/23Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

Justin Hayward can still hit all the notes required in Nights in White Satin which few his age can do. While not the Moody Blues , the band was adequate. Have seen his shows a few times , and it is always good. Rock on Justin.

    Outstanding Small Group Performance

by ChuckE on 1/29/23Ponte Vedra Concert Hall - Ponte Vedra Beach

Justin and his small group provided an amazing performance of Moody Blues and other solo album favorites in an intimate venue. Vocals were fantastic as usual with a softer more complex overall sound than previous Moody Blues deliveries. Justin hasn't missed a step, despite approaching 80 and his band mates helped considerably to make this tour a must see for fans.
