About

B.B. King is in his late 80s, but the King of Blues is still on stage with his band and his famous guitar Lucille more than 100 nights a year -- a tour schedule that would tax many artists a quarter of his age. He's without a doubt the most well-known and successful living blues artist in the world. A Mississippi native, Riley B. King first built his reputation while working as a DJ, guitarist and jingle writer at the legendary radio station WDIA in Memphis, where he was known as "Blues Boy King" -- a nickname that was later shortened to B.B. He recorded his first album in 1949, and has released more than 50 albums since that have yielded popular songs like "The Thrill is Gone," "Three O'Clock Blues," and "You Upset Me Baby." King, a 1987 inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, is known for his precise and sparse guitar style in which he plays individual strings instead of chords, coaxing his unmistakable sound by bending and holding notes. Today he plays concerts sitting down because of his diabetic condition, but that doesn't stop fans from scooping up tickets to see this still-vital living legend who influenced guitarists ranging from Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton to John Mayer and Derek Trucks.

Not a good show for the price!

by Almev on 7/21/14Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

B.B. King, at 88, can no longer physically put on a show worth the price of admission. His band is good. If he wants to continue using his name, to sell tickets, let the band play. The show was way too short. B.B. did not play hardly any of the songs that you would expect. I only go to one concert a year and when I pay $130 for 2 tickets, I expect to be entertained for a couple of hours. I'm paying to hear B.B. sing, not the audience. When you only play about 5 songs, do I really need to hear, "You Are My Sunshine" and "When the Saints Come Marching In"?

    The elder BB King

by PoconoBob on 7/21/14Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

It is said that BB intends to give concerts 'until the day he dies'. Unfortunately, such an attitude, although heroic, makes for bad performances. BB is really past his ability to give performances worthy of his younger, innate talent. In fact, at times his mind seemed to drift. Although his backup band is composed of some of the best old-time musicians, he no longer can equal their musical level. I heard BB many times in the mid-eighties in Philadelphia when he was as his best. But, sadly, it's time for him to call it quits with the concert tours.

A legend at my favorite venue!

by kristabelle on 7/21/14Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

BB King has been on my bucket list for YEARS. I finally got to see him this past Friday & he did not disappoint. I thought he was excellent! He is 88 years old and can still play the hell out of a guitar!

    Totally depressing

    by Juno1234 on 7/21/14Warner Theatre - Washington

I'm a big B.B.King fan and have been to dozens of his performances over the past 40 years. Saw him a couple of years ago and although he sat in a chair throughout he put on an awesome show with great guitar playing. Not this time - why does he still perform in public? It can't be about the money - The show on Thursday was terrible to watch. B.B. just meandered on and on, a 10-minute sing along of "You are my sunshine", lots of come on jokes, a few minutes frittering with his guitar, people yelling at him to play something, or shouting encouragement. Just so sad - and then he couldn't get up out of his chair, even with help. We left then, and probably should have left long before. Don't book him again!

    Let it go

by Whoknows2014 on 7/21/14Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

I went into this with a fair amount of optimism; I have seem BB in the past (14 years ago) and was really looking forward to a show. I unfortunately feel like BB is getting a bit up there and not really able to keep up with the rigors of a show. As my brother put it, it was kind of like going to grandma's house for thanksgiving only to walk out saying this was the last time we are letting her cook. Good to see for nostalgia but not much else I am afraid to say.

    bb king the legend

by Anonymous on 7/21/14Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

Been a BB fan since the 60's and have seen him several times over the years. always put on a great show. Over the last couple years he's been getting some not so good reviews ,but people still have been kind. Now at the age of 88 I wanted to see and support him again for all his many , many years of musical accomplishment's . Just getting to 88 is a big deal ! Sold out crowd and he got a standing ovation when he walked out on stage unassisted. You can tell he really loved still being on stage and had a big smile for most of the show. Being about 10 feet away was like having him in your living room! his voice was still clearly BB and stronger than I expected. The age showed and he only was on stage for a little over an hour. Ended with the THRILL IS GONE and the house was on it's feet. The crowd treated him with the respect he deserves but not sure everyone was happy with the show. For me personally I would have liked to see an amazing man and woman singer telling stories about BB and singing those great BB King tunes with his still strong band. No one sounds like BB and with those great songs of his they don't have to. then have BB come out for the finally ( The Thrill is gone of coarse). The place would have gone nuts and I'm sure would have felt they got their money's worth for the price of a $65.00 ticket. BB KING an AMAZING MUSICIAN! SO GLAD HE'S STILL WITH US !!!!!!!

    BB at Penns Peak

by SonnyDRey on 7/21/14Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

God Bless him. If you want to say someday that you saw the King, please do so. I have seen him 6 times through his career and actually had the blessing of playing with a jam he was involved in in Portland way back when. Tonight I was excited to see him again and at the same time saddened to see the physical and mental aging that is occurring. It was amazing that he was able to get 45 minutes of playing in. He was able to get out Thrill is Gone at the end, but the rest was jamming and playing to the crowd. God bless him. He is the King. Its nice to see everyone working to help him stay on his feet. You Go BB!

    Sad

by beaner20 on 7/21/14Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

This was not our first BB King concert, but we had not seen him in concert in about 8 years. The show we saw was heartbreaking. He was not his infamous self, but he was more like someone's grandfather just sitting around rambling about old memories. He would become confused while talking, he would get lost during the few songs he actually played, and the band did not seem to want to come to his rescue. Having read other reviews after coming back from this concert, it seems to be an exact duplicate of what happened in Kansas City back in April. The people that protect and take care for him should love him enough to let him retire with dignity. If they are trying to do this, they need to try harder. This is not how a great legend such as BB King should be remembered.

    B.B. King Concert

    by Red0720 on 7/21/14Warner Theatre - Washington

I was absolutely thrilled when I heard the legend, B.B. King, was coming to town. So imagine our disappointment when the extent of his entertainment was talking to the audience, several rounds of group singalong "You are my sunshine...", barely touching Lucille, missing pitch and words to a handful of songs played. I have loved this man's music for years and was so very sad to see this play out. When the audience is getting up and leaving before he leaves the stage, there is a clue. Paying $90 per ticket for this show was an insult. Someone on his team should tell him it's time to hang it up.

    God Bless you BB King

by Paulie1 on 7/21/14Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

I love B.B. King but his performance was less than stellar. I realize that he is up in his years now, but I think he is struggling to perform also. I wanted to see him one last time but this performance will be the last. He did not play many of his songs and those that he did (You are my sunshine, my only sunshine?) is not what I expected to hear. On top of that he decided to engage in conversation with front row patrons in which no one else could hear which lasted about a good 10 to 15 minutes. I paid money to hear him perform not talk to a certain few. At the end of the night it ended up to be a sort of Mardi Gras in which Mr. King was throwing things attempting to reach the audience. Unfortunately most items landed on the stage with people rushing and reaching over barriers to claim them.

    Bitter sweet BB

by Anonymous on 7/21/14Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

He sang 5 songs including u r my sunshine and when the saints go marching in! He is 89 in Sept but I expected his music. He also talked a lot to people in the front row and no one could hear it. Faded glory

    Disappointing

by Maryds56 on 7/21/14Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

Although he is a legend and I realize an 88 year old man, I still expected to hear some lyrics and for BB to make an effort to put on a show. The show literally lasted an hour. Fans should be told up front what to expect. We should have the choice to decide id $55 ticket price is worth it just to have an opportunity to watch a performer be helped on & off the stage and hear literally four songs. Honestly, "The Thrill is Gone"

    Not what we expected!

by Md123hdjdidnd on 7/21/14Penn's Peak - Jim Thorpe

I love BB King. Always have and always will, but he's 88 and it's showing. He played roughly five songs at best or at least part of five songs. Spoke most of the time and spent 15 minutes introducing the band. The show lasted just over an hour. Sorry BB, I love you, but might be time to call it quits.

    DISASTER

by NEGE on 7/20/14Warner Theatre - Washington

Sad but true -- BB is done. He no longer plays the guitar and is barely coherent. Take BB off Tour so we can all remember him as he was.
