    moving performance

by Adancersmom on 5/6/15Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace - Oakbrook Terrace

This is the second time we have seen Billy Elliot, the first was 5 years ago at the Ford Theatre. I seem to recall the first set being a bit "more" (not fair to compare but was expected in his angry scene) this show was wonderful and I appreciate being close to home in the suburbs. Thank you, Drury Lane!

    "Show of Shows"

by stets on 5/4/15Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace - Oakbrook Terrace

I've seen BETM over five dozen times across the globe from the Victoria Palace in London, the Imperial in NYC, Toronto's Canon; the Oriental in Chicago, and a dozen cities on Tour in the U.S. All pretty much followed the original format from it's first showing in the UK. I expected to find pretty much some of the same at the Drury Lane...only to be shocked and amazed by a production of such energy and imagination in terms of staging, lighting, blocking, sound quality and most importantly, the cast led by two world class Billy Elliot's with choreography to match their superiority...I'm here to say, this production exceeds anything I can remember during the last ten years. If you know anything about the award winning film "Billy Elliot" which came out in 2000, and the fact that three NY Billies won the Tony Award in 2009 for their performances that year, then you should make it a point to see the Drury Lane production as soon as possible. You will be thoroughly rewarded yourself and will long remember a top quality superior performance of this classic you may not see again.

    Billy Elliott Nails It

by IceRoRo on 5/4/15Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace - Oakbrook Terrace

Loved this show. The story moves along nicely and the dancing by Billy Elliott (played by Nicholas Dantes) was excellent. The whole production was very professional and each cast member was great. A large cast of talented singers, dancers, and actors. Our first time at Drury Lane Theatre in Oakbrook.

    Don't Miss It!

by Baileysmomnancy on 5/4/15Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace - Oakbrook Terrace

This is hands-down the best production I have seen on any stage. Our club went last week and several of the girls had seen it on the Chicago or London stages. They all agreed that the quality of this performance far surpassed anything they had seen before. Loads of singing and dancing, outstanding talent and lots of laughs. Do not miss this one!

What an amazing show - and dinner too!

by Nonickname22 on 5/4/15Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace - Oakbrook Terrace

I love this theater and have seen many shows here - but Billy Elliot was the best ever! The talent, the music, the shear thrill of it all! Not a bad seat in the place so no matter what you spend for seats it will be perfect. I would avoid the first 5 rows and it is really VERY close to the stage. This was the first time I dined in the restaurant - and I have to tell you I love gourmet food - the dinner was outstanding. I had the trout and my date had the beef. Yummo! Wonderful wine list too. Service was impeccable. The entire evening was so perfect!!!!

    Unexpectedly "Professional Grade"

by RNGE on 5/1/15Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace - Oakbrook Terrace

We had never seen this Illinois troupe perform before, but I had seen Billy Elliot performed in London's West End (at the Victoria Palace Theatre). My expectations were thus lower compared to a Broadway or West End production. However, I was very pleasantly surprised with the quality of singing, acting, dancing, music, and staging -- despite a stage that was much smaller (perhaps 1/3 or less of the square footage of the Victoria Palace Theatre), this local production was amzaingly close to the level of performance I had seen in London. Kudos to the local production team and actors! Having seen Billy Elliot months before Margaret Thatcher's passing, I was also curious about how the infamous Christmas party scene would be handled. In England, I had learned that there was still bad blood on the topic (but subsequently learning that this had thrown nearly a million people, workers plus their families, into poverty in the 1980s made this less surprising) -- so the London scene was unabashedly and extremely anti-Thatcher. If memory of that earlier staging is accurate, the hard edges of this Christmas scene were softened in the local Drury Lane production, and seemed almost respectful compared to the original. Well, done, in my opinion. So overall, this production was surprisingly good, and after having finally learned about this gem of a theater, production team, and actors, we will be back.

    Amazing production

by BillyFan3 on 4/29/15Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace - Oakbrook Terrace

Probably the best thing I have ever seen at Drury Lane. Cast is top notch. I have seen this show on Broadway and on tour and this production ranks right up there with them.

Billy Elliot the Musical was spectacular!

by dinohunter8 on 4/20/15Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace - Oakbrook Terrace

It was a magical evening! I brought my two grandchildren (ages eleven and nine) and warned them about the language so there would be no surprises. I gave them the background of anger during strikes. They loved the musical! Their favorite part was when Billy and his friend Michael dance and sing together. The cast was wonderful. The actor who played and danced as Billy was outstanding. but Michael did steal the scene when he and Billy dance together. Michael's dancing antics delighted the crowd. The next day I saw the Chicago Tribune review of the musical. FOUR STARS! and the reviewer was just as enthusiastic as we were. Don't miss this musical. I will be going to see it again!

    Billy Elliot fully realized

by CCasbon on 4/19/15Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace - Oakbrook Terrace

This production made Billy Elliot everything it could be. Funny, gripping, silly, painful. A love story about art and its power to transform lives. The young person playing Billy is the heart and soul of the piece, but all cast members are tightly interconnected, which makes the story that much more credible. They recommend that the kids be 13, I think because of the swearing, but I'll be bringing my 10 year old, because kids go through things like Billy does all of the time. Billy finds a positive way to deal with the stress in his young life in a positive way. I feel it is important for my son to see this before he enters his teen years. Brilliant, beautiful work. A lot of love went into this show.

    Fantastic Production!!

by DaytonGuys on 4/19/15Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace - Oakbrook Terrace

I drove over 300 miles to see this production of Billy Eliot, and I was not disappointed. This is a great show! The cast was superb, and Nicolas Dantes is an adorable and extremely talented Billy. His singing and dancing was enjoyable to watch. I was thrilled with the show from its first number to the closing curtain.

    "Utter Genius"

by stets on 4/18/15Drury Lane Oak Brook Tarrace - Oak Brook

I have seen BETM across the globe, from many cities on the "Tour;" from Chicago, Toronto, to NYC, and during four trips to the Victoria Palace in the UK. I relate very emotionally to the story, to Billy's plight, to the sensitivity of Michael his best friend, to his family's and the community's initial ridicule of his artistic desire to be a dancer. I'm here to say, that Drury Lane's production and interpretation of this musical was the best I've seen, and as far as I'm concerned, the Director and the Choreographer who put this thing together deserve enormous kudos for their thoughtful imagination which makes this production such a thrilling success. I should also say, the audio, the lighting effects, and the imaginative staging gives the show a whole new visual take which, as far as I'm concerned, is far superior than any performance I saw at the larger theatrical venues. With the superior cast, the magnificent leads of Nicholas Dantes, and Kyle Halford as alternating Billies, and Michael Harp as Billy's star crossed friend, as well as the host of other young kids who make up the core of the cast, you have a version of BETM which cannot be beat. As a young person of 12-13 years old and up, (there is some strong language throughout the dialogue] and as a parent or family member, this show should be on your list. There are lessons to be learned from the story line and through the emotions of the young protagonists that serve as an example for all of us. Do not delay in purchasing tickets.

    A Must-See Show

An amazingly well-acted and well-performed show, made even more impressive by the many young people in the cast. The songs are great and everyone can really dance.

    It was OK

by HulaBalooo on 4/15/15Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace - Oakbrook Terrace

Great story. So-so production. Meh theater. It was priced just a touch more than community theater, and had just a touch more production value. I found Billy's wardrobe of revolving sweatpants particularly odd - sure they made for easy on-stage costume changes and free movement for the actor, but they didn't do anything visually to make the dancing (or any of the show) visually appealing. The cast was certainly large; but a few characters seemed superfluous. Unfortunately the tall lanky kid playing Billy was just OK. He could tap-dance, but wasn't much of a singer or ballet dancer, and in general - just seemed to lack energy or enthusiasm for anything. OH well. The shorter kid playing Michael was much more entertaining - and a better singer. I thought the actor playing Billy's big brother did an excellent job, as did the teacher and the mother, and several chorus members. Over-all it was a good show - but definitely had a lot of room for improvement. We do one or two shows a month of some sort, and we definitely don't regret going - I had just hoped for a little better. I think if I went again I'd pay the extra and go see it downtown.

    Exellent production!

by southbendghosts on 4/15/15Drury Lane Theatre Oakbrook Terrace - Oakbrook Terrace

I've seen Billy Elliot 4 times now, and this was the best one yet. The Broadway production was flashier, and the dancing was, perhaps, more jaw-dropping, but at Drury Lane the story came through better. I got more of a sense of Mrs. Wilkinson working with Billy, and the changes made in the staging actually made for a more personal experience. The acting was exceptional, as was the choreography. Bravo!
