About

James Taylor in Concert

James Taylor is the archetypal singer/songwriter, who helped create the template for the troubadour style that dominated the 1970s. And when he brings his blend of folk, pop, rock, and soul influences to the stage, it's like a part of history is unfolding before the crowd, with enough tuneful energy to generate some major good-time vibes. The five-time Grammy-winning, multi-platinum songsmith offered up tracks like "Fire and Rain" and "You've Got a Friend" to the collective pop-cultural consciousness in the '70s, and they've stayed there ever since. Of course, he's continued to make compelling music for many decades, and his shows are a grab bag of transfixing new tunes and beloved classics. Taylor's 2018 tour with his All-Star Band (not to be confused with Ringo Starr's similarly named group) also shows how much a crew of world-class players can bring to a classic catalog. Some of the most renowned musicians on the planet lend their talents to the band, including drumming god Steve Gadd, hotshot jazz pianist Kevin Hays, legendary saxman Lou Marini, and more.

James Taylor Background

James Taylor was born in Boston, but moved to North Carolina a few years later, and the bucolic settings of his childhood eventually informed the pastoral side of his songwriting in a major way. He learned guitar in his adolescence, soaking up folk and blues influences before hitting the coffeehouse circuit in the '60s. Before too long he was in Greenwich Village fronting a band called The Flying Machine, but he soon emerged as a solo singer/songwriter. His 1970 album ‘Sweet Baby James' became a game-changer for the whole '70s music scene. Alongside the likes of Carole King and Joni Mitchell, Taylor epitomized the thoughtful, acoustic-based ballad style that came to dominate the era, and ubiquitous hits like "Fire and Rain" and "Country Road" were central to that style. In later years Taylor showed his versatility by scoring smash singles with covers of R&B tunes like Marvin Gaye's "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" and Jimmy Jones' '50s hit "Handyman," and Taylor has never stopped finding fresh ways to bring his work to the huge audience that's been addicted to his music for decades.

    You've Got A (new) Friend

by RudeHawaiian on 5/8/24Neal S Blaisdell Arena - Honolulu

My wife grew up and loving James Taylor music....so she dragged me along [we actually had to fly to O'ahu] to his concert. It was one of the most mellowest concert and I was just amazed how the crowd responded to his music. I truly can say I'm inspired with his music and with the man, a humble man. Got the pleasure of personally thanking him about his concert...saw him at the airport - he heading to Maui for his Sunday concert as my wife and I headed back to our country road on Hawaii Island. Mahalo NUI James Taylor...you've got a NEW friend :o)

This was a great concert. All James! Loved no opener. Hours of all our favorite songs and the place was packed. So glad I got to cross this off my bucket list. Still one of my all time favorites.

    A Magical Evening

    by honu1919 on 5/7/24Neal S Blaisdell Arena - Honolulu

An Evening with James Taylor exceeded my expectations! A truly seasoned performer who garners an intimate relationship with the audience, supported with a top notch band proved to be the medicine my date and I needed to be transported to a magical place of pure enjoyment! The Neal Blaisdell Center (NBC) served well as the venue for this event, continuing its already rich legacy as am performing arts haven. JT's voice was clear and resonate, his guitar styling exquisite, and his report with the audience unmatched. Having every member of the band a well respected artist on their own merit was icing on the cake! If you have a chance to see JT, don't hesitate to do so!

    Fantastic night!!

by RainboBarb on 5/7/24Neal S Blaisdell Arena - Honolulu

JT was as amazing musically as ever with a little more jazzy, skit-skat going on. It wasn't enough to "wreck"his traditional awesomeness, just a little updated fun. And he was FUNNY too. It was glorious to hear and meet all the other talented folks that brought that show on full blast. Didn't love the weird stand lights, they seemed unneccessary but were only a little distracting. Big screens were excellent even though we had really good seats for seeing the show. LOVED our girls night out with James Taylor!!

    Wonderful Concert

by Paul on 5/7/24Neal S Blaisdell Arena - Honolulu

Was blown away at the James Taylor concert. Was the second time I have seen him in concert. Still has an excellent voice. Was surprised how good his band is and how much the accompanying singers added to the show. My only suggestion is if he could have added a video clip of Carol King and sing a duet with her. Concert was excellent. Everyone at the concert enjoyed themselves. There was a buzz in the air as attendees left the arena.

    Outstanding

by Markaloha on 5/7/24Neal S Blaisdell Arena - Honolulu

Amazing concert from the moment the lights dimmed at 8:10 until the third encore song at 10:20. The number of songs, the energy, the voice quality, the A Team backup, the interaction between performers and packed arena all made for an enchanting evening.
