WILCO IN CONCERT:

Though Wilco always uses the sounds of Americana as their launchpad, they’ve managed to explore a universe of musical possibilities over the past twenty years. With his poetic turns of phrase and endearingly raspy vocals, frontman Jeff Tweedy provides a country heart to their music that always wins over fans at their live performances. While he delivers the earthy grit, the rest of the band soars into the stratosphere, incorporating everything from ambient electronica to Dixieland jazz. But they also know how to rock on epics like “Impossible Germany”, “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart”, and “A Shot in the Arm”. Though ticket buyers never quite know what to expect from these innovative musical adventurers, they know they can count on Wilco to deliver a an electrifying, genre-defying concert experience every time they take the stage on tour.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Frontman Jeff Tweedy formed Wilco out of the ashes of his earlier alt-country band Uncle Tupelo, absorbing most of the lineup to release the new band’s 1995 debut A.M. The group quickly developed a reputation for incorporating experimental elements with their next two albums Being There (1996) and Summerteeth (1999). Despite those sonically ambitious releases, nothing prepared fans for the aural onslaught of 2001’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, which pushed the boundaries of music production and defied genre lines all together. The band’s record label famously refused to release the album, while overwhelming fan support and critical adulation lead to a bidding war that netted Wilco a lucrative recording contract. Their next album A Ghost Is Born (2004) won a Grammy for Alternative Album of the Year. Following several critically acclaimed albums and core additions to the group, Wilco remains a vital and restlessly creative force in both their live concerts and their recorded output, which includes 2015’s secretly released Star Wars.

So many songs to choose from

by Great show on 10/2/23Moody Amphitheater - Austin

We all have our Wilco favorites and they did a great job singing most of their best off all of their albums. So much fun and such a positive energy.

    Sit down yall

by NM on 10/2/23Moody Amphitheater - Austin

Opening act of my brightest diamond was fantastic but once Wilco went on stage all of the audience stood for the rest of the show- which made it difficult for me to enjoy the show as I chose seats bc of my limited view bc of my height and general inability to stand for long periods of time. The general fan base of Wilco is primarily male and it was very apparent as the people around me never felt the need to consider the other people around them. We ended up leaving the concert early bc there weren’t many alternative options for viewing a concert when you purchased seated tickets. I know for future reference to not pay extra for seats and just to go for the lawn seats when going to the moody amphitheater.

Why do we pay to stand for several hours??

by Seats please! on 10/1/23South Side Ballroom - Dallas

Have been to concerts at Southside Ballroom a few times. Each time I’m so uncomfortable—I’m not that old—yet my back and feet ache and I find myself wishing each song is the last so I can get out of there. What’s wrong with seats?? Why do we pay to do this to ourselves??

    Great concert, but…

by BeeDub on 10/1/23South Side Ballroom - Dallas

They hit the stage promptly at 8:30 as advertised, but to me it was more than obvious Wilco members were tired at the start. Maybe it was just me, but I thought it took them 30-45 minutes to retie their rock ‘n roll shoes. Tweedy asked the crowd several times “How you doing?” almost as though he had developed a sudden case of Old Timer’s. After playing cuts off their new album “Cousin” they gave the crowd what they wanted with older material that was perfect. I was impressed by the more than adequate sound system (my first Southside Ballroom concert), but I think the stage needs to be about three feet higher. I’m 6’4” and felt I blocked many folks’ view.

    Great Venue and Show

by Wilco! on 10/1/23South Side Ballroom - Dallas

I've waited a long time to see Wilco and it did not disappoint. They played three or four of my favorites, they could have played a 4-hour show and that would have been perfectly fine with me to get everything in. Well done professional smooth heartfelt.

    Wilco

    by M. C. on 5/4/23White Oak Amphitheatre - Greensboro

Wilco is an under-appreciated band that has been together for many years. Some of their work is widely recognized and has been critically acclaimed. Great musicians, incredible song writing, and one of the best Americana bands around. Sadly, they don't get much mainstream attention but true music fans are their biggest fans. That was evident in Greensboro with Kenny Chesney performing next door. I feel confident saying that Wilco fans were very happy to be there as opposed to next door.

    Not good

by Beck on 5/2/23White Oak Amphitheatre - Greensboro

Chose not to go once I learned that a Kenny Chesny concert was to occur on the same night at the Greensboro Coliseum. I guess you know that the White Oak is in the parking lot of the Greensboro Coliseum? Oh and some kind of prom event was there as well. It doesn’t seem like any consideration was given to the fan experience for those going to the Wilco show.

    Never a disappointment!

by maDmiKe442 on 5/2/23White Oak Amphitheatre - Greensboro

I've had the privilege to see Wilco on many occasions and in a lot of unique venues. Although the White Oak Amphitheater would be the least appealing venue to date, the band put on a great show. A good mix of music, great lighting/stage, and the setlist was on par. I would have preferred a bit more of the country side of Wilco, especially considering their latest release, but perhaps it had to do with the fact that a popular country artist was playing indoors at the same complex, at the same time. Did I mention there was also a fair/carnival going on, too?? Yeah, I'm sure Jeff could see the Tilt-A-whirl spinning around off in the distance. It was a messy traffic situation but I'm so glad I made the trip out from Raliegh to see it. Come back to the NCMA !! My girl and I have been raving about this show for a few days now, and we see a lot of shows but usually the afterglow fades quickly. Never with Wilco.

Ridiculous to have so many events scheduled in effectively same venue at same time. Horrible traffic and parking.

    Wilco tour

by J. R. on 4/28/23Mark C. Smith Concert Hall at the Von Braun Center - Huntsville

I was fortunate to catch Wilco at three stops on the tour—Birmingham, Huntsville and Nashville. All I can say is that each show was absolutely phenomenal. Best band in America.
