About

Brilliantly innovative, heartbreaking, and wickedly funny, HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH is the landmark American musical by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask that is “groundbreaking and undoubtedly ahead of its time” (Entertainment Weekly). This genre-bending, fourth-wall-smashing musical sensation, with a pulsing score and electrifying performances, tells the story of one of the most unique characters to ever hit the stage.

Directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening) and winner of four 2014 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival, HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH played to record-breaking sell-out crowds on Broadway and promises to take the country by storm with what Time Magazine proclaims is “the most exciting rock score written for the theatre since, oh, ever!”

    Hedwig was a phenomenal!

by Cdonn76 on 3/5/17The Fisher Theater - Detroit

This show was AMAZING!! The cast, sets, lights, and sound were all great! Yes, it's a non-traditional musical. But, if you let Hedwig take you one his journey, it is one you will never forget.

    In Your Face and Incredible!

by Tiltedacre on 3/5/17Fisher Theatre - Detroit

Even though the understudy performed the role of Hedwig the night we saw it here in Detroit, I honestly cannot imagine anyone doing the lead role any better. Hedwig was captivating from the second he entered the stage, and the energy was non-stop. I particularly enjoyed when Hedwig toyed with several members of the audience. This is honestly one of the best things I have ever seen on stage, period! Do not miss it!

    Underwhelmed

by Crimlawyer on 3/5/17Fisher Theatre - Detroit

We were disappointed in Hedwig. You can't just slap a dress on a man and think you are doing something revolutionary by having him run around a stage thrusting his pelvis everywhere. There just wasn't much substance to the show. A few moments made me laugh but otherwise it was overacted and just not good. Also, I found it nearly impossible to understand the lyrics to any of the songs.

    Good music, but mediocre show

by Anonymous on 3/3/17Fisher Theatre - Detroit

We attended based on recommendation of my daughter, who loved the show. We were less enthusiastic, the music was good, but the monologues between the music sometimes dragged on for way too long. My daughter accurately described the show as similar to Rocky Horror Picture Show - sort of a wacky story of transgender singer. It's basically a rock musical, where you get to know the characters between rock songs. Admittedly, I was not familiar with the music before attending and that may have detracted from my enjoying the show. The music is good, but the show itself is not for everyone. There is a lot of explicit sexual references/language and some people might find that offensive (about 10 people walked out of show I attended within 15 minutes of start). I'm pretty sure the couple sitting next to us never figured out the "Angry Inch" was a reference to the remnants of a sex change operation. Like most rock shows, it was loud and strobe lights were used frequently (which give headaches to some people). All in all, I have mixed feelings about the show, and I'd be careful who I recommended attend.

    Hedwig and the Angry Inch

    by fransene1 on 3/3/17Fisher Theatre - Detroit

I was excited to see this show after watching "Doogie Howser" perform Sugar Baby at the Grammy Awards a few years ago. Hedwig, the understudy, went on. I could not understand him at times and when I did, I was not impressed. We left early because neither of us were enjoying the show.

    In Your Face

by YodaOfCanton on 3/2/17Fisher Theatre - Detroit

An interesting story and successful run on Broadway attracted me to see this touring company version of Hedwig. The cast and on-stage band, along with special lighting effects, are in your face for the entire show (no intermission). The story unfolds at a fast pace, with lot's of funny local references to bring it home. A caveat is that It's difficult to follow the details of the story unless you have read the plot ahead of the show.. Also this is not a show that you will likely want to bring children to.

    Hedwig was absolutely fantastic!

    by Shamrocker531 on 3/1/17Fisher Theatre - Detroit

I've been a fan of the movie for over a decade and couldn't wait to see this live. It totally lived up to my high expectations. It was absolutely hilarious and heartbreaking and as soon as it was over I wanted to watch it all over again! Definitely a must see.

    Yawn

Is the show not terribly interesting and engaging, or is it the road company? Your guess is as good as mine, but I don't really care. It was not very entertaining.

Hedwig was more impressive than I could've imagine

    by BigTommy1961 on 2/27/17Fisher Theatre - Detroit

The show we saw was missing the lead actor but the stand-in did so well I don't care what the star would have done. It was an awesome show, the lead made it personal with the audience and I wish I had time to go see it again before its engagement here ends. Was very true to the story and they did an excellent job with the music and songs. It was my first stage show to attend but will certainly not be my last.

    Disliked is NOT strong enough

by Eanubian on 2/26/17Fisher Theater - Detroit

Perhaps it was that I did not read a synopsis prior to attending but from the first note I was disappointed. I have never left the Fisher Theater early - not even during intermission so this was a first. There was not an intermission so it was difficult to find a good time to exit.

I didn't realize it would be a monologue in the same scene throughout the entire performance. The story line and lack of variety didn't hold my interest, nor did the music.
