Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit Live in Concert
Jason Isbell was born into a musical family in Green Hill, Alabama, in 1979. His grandfather and uncle taught him to play various musical instruments, and the young musician started playing the mandolin when he was just 6. Destined for a life in the spotlight, he joined the Drive-By Truckers in 2001 at the age of 22. Isbell was a member of the Drive-By Truckers for six years before cutting out for a solo career. He released his first solo album, Sirens of the Ditch, in 2007. Some of his most notable work began when he assembled a group of musicians that would become known as The 400 Unit. The group consists of Sadler Vaden of Drivin' N Cryin' on guitar, Jimbo Hart on bass, Derry deBorja on keyboards and accordion, Chad Gamble on drums and Isbell's wife Amanda Shires on fiddle. The 400 Unit is playfully named after the psychiatric ward of Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence, Alabama. Isbell and the band's first collaboration resulted in the release of the self-titled album Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit in 2009. In 2011, the collaboration continued with the release of Here We Rest. The track "Alabama Pines" was named Song of the Year at the 2012 Americana Music Awards. The Nashville Sound was released in 2017, winning the Grammy Award for Best Americana Album, with Isbell winning an additional Grammy Award for Best American Roots Song. In 2020, the group released Reunions, with the song "Be Afraid" hitting No. 5 on the Adult Alternative Songs chart. During the November 2020 election, Isbell announced he would make a charity album if Joe Biden won the state of Georgia. When this came to pass, Isbell worked to release the cover album Georgia Blue the following year. The album was a collaboration by various artists, and Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit contributed a cover of the Metallica song "Sad But True." Isbell has won four Grammy Awards between 2001 and 2007.
Awesome! Great show! Sound was great. Song selection was excellent! Highly recommended!
Best bang for your buck if you want an amazing show. Plus Isbell is my hall pass.
Best bang for your buck if you want an amazing show. Plus Isbell is my hall pass.
Jason was fired up, interactive with the crowd and was helped by Slader Vaden from DaC on guitar. As part of the encore did a jam of Melissa that was epic. Show ran :30 minutes long in a union hall and everyone got what they came for.
Whatâs to say except Isbell is as good as it gets. Seeing him is like seeing Dylan in 1965.
So happy I finally got to see Isbell. It was even better than I thought. Great songs and band is full of amazing musicians. Sadler Vaden is just magnificent. Will plan to see him again and recommend for sure!
Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit did not disappoint. We bought the VIP access ticket. It was very very difficult to understand what we got for the VIP ticket. Essentially it provided early access to the venue since it was general admission which allowed us to get up front. The time to enter for GA virus VIP was not at all clear. WE stood outside the gate with all of the ticket takers standing and looking at everyone. Eventually we went up to talk to one of them and they said, "Oh yeah, the VIP tickets can come in now"We could have easily stood there the whole time and no one would have said anything. They also indicated that we could get into a special area. This made it unclear if the special area had chairs or we should bring our own. Please be more clear on these details in the future. Not everyone is a repeat attendee.
Jason is one of the best! Music was perfect! Concert was perfect! BUTâŠvenue parking and food availability was an F! No instructions or directions were ANYWHERE to be found. I tried several places to find out specifics to no avail. Two of 3 entrances were closed. No signs pointing to correct entrance. Actual parking was ok but when concert ended the large field with no markings or signs turned into utter chaos. Every man for himselfâŠno lines no marked exits just a total fire drill cluster. Food vendors were totally insufficient for the crowd size, and after being told no coolers we had to wait until after the show to get ANYTHING to eat. The line of close to 100 in bbq line never seemed to shorten even after several trips to see and later in the show people were saying they had run out of food. These problems were inexcusable. They should have had 4 or 5 food trucks and a coherent parking plan in placeâŠand a website that had accurate info and contact information. So the show was PERFECTâŠ.but the other pieces were abysmal.
This was one of the most captivating concerts I have been to. Jason Isbell sounds just as good live as he does on his recordings. Jason and the 400 Unit play beautifully together and it is so captivating to watch them play together. They truly put on a show.
The show was amazing. Their music speaks to my soul. Loved the Drivin Dj Cryin cover!
You should not miss seeing this American storyteller and amazing band. I already knew all the words, but their emotions singing these beautiful songs was palpable. I would travel many miles to see them again.
They played an excellent show. I will be looking forward to seeing them again in the future.
Jason Isbell and the 400 unit were incredible. He sounds better live than he does on the album which is awesome, since it is a beautiful record. The venue was perfect with a family friendly atmosphere and a very crisp sound system.
Great show, had an excellent time seeing him for the first time. My husband and friends we went with had seen him before with DBT but I had not and they said he was just as great this time as 20 years before. Would definitely go again!
Last time I saw Jason Isbell live he was still with DBT, and I was so glad to see he hasn't lost a step. The show alternated between tight, loud rock n roll and what Isbell himself calls 'story songs. So glad we went...
The venue is greatâplenty of room to spread out, not a bad seat in the house, enough bathrooms, really fun and sound was great. But it was advertised as having food trucksâthere were two, a popsicle stand, and a snocone stand. We waited in line for an hour and they ran out of food. Told us we could wait and they would get more, waited again, they took our order, but they still didnât have enough. By this point, the opening act was finishing up, and if we had waited in line at the only food stand in the venue we would have missed the concert. Anyway, obviously not a dealbreaker but not ideal either. Isbell and the 400 Unit were fantastic and would return to the venue for sure (just eat first).
It was awesome! Weather was perfect. Jason Isbell is the best. He sounded great live and is such a talented musician. The 400 was great also
This was a great concert. Jason Isbellâs lyrics have depth, humor and humanity. The musicianship was incredible. In addition to all of that - it was fun.
Show was amazing! However, two food trucks for that amount of people? Ridiculous. Not sure who was in charge of that, but fail. Would have rather paid more and been allowed to bring a cooler like most Radian shows vs standing in an hour long line. Again though, show was best I've seen him.
One of the best concerts we have been to by far. They were very professional and sounded awesome. Great venue.
