Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit Live in Concert

Jason Isbell was born into a musical family in Green Hill, Alabama, in 1979. His grandfather and uncle taught him to play various musical instruments, and the young musician started playing the mandolin when he was just 6. Destined for a life in the spotlight, he joined the Drive-By Truckers in 2001 at the age of 22. Isbell was a member of the Drive-By Truckers for six years before cutting out for a solo career. He released his first solo album, Sirens of the Ditch, in 2007. Some of his most notable work began when he assembled a group of musicians that would become known as The 400 Unit. The group consists of Sadler Vaden  of Drivin' N Cryin' on guitar, Jimbo Hart on bass, Derry deBorja on keyboards and accordion, Chad Gamble on drums and Isbell's wife Amanda Shires on fiddle. The 400 Unit is playfully named after the psychiatric ward of Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital in Florence, Alabama. Isbell and the band's first collaboration resulted in the release of the self-titled album Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit in 2009. In 2011, the collaboration continued with the release of Here We Rest. The track "Alabama Pines" was named Song of the Year at the 2012 Americana Music Awards. The Nashville Sound was released in 2017, winning the Grammy Award for Best Americana Album, with Isbell winning an additional Grammy Award for Best American Roots Song. In 2020, the group released Reunions, with the song "Be Afraid" hitting No. 5 on the Adult Alternative Songs chart. During the November 2020 election, Isbell announced he would make a charity album if Joe Biden won the state of Georgia. When this came to pass, Isbell worked to release the cover album Georgia Blue the following year. The album was a collaboration by various artists, and Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit contributed a cover of the Metallica song "Sad But True." Isbell has won four Grammy Awards between 2001 and 2007.

    Tremendous Show - Great Room

by Tony Joe Esco on 3/6/24The Salt Shed Indoors (Shed) - Chicago

Jason Isbell was smokin' ! His musicianship was ridiculous. I knew he could play...but wow. The real star of the evening though was the Salt Shed. Such a great place to see a show. It's like a high school gym with really great acoustics. You can see and enjoy the show from just about every position on the floor, or seat in the house. I sat in the Grandstands, and it's quite climb to get up to your seat, but the elevated view is worth it.

Jason Isbell and band hits a home run

by Chris on 3/4/24The Salt Shed Indoors (Shed) - Chicago

Or stinks a hole in one if you prefer that analogy (those who attended the show will get the reference). I completely enjoyed the concert put on by Jason Isabel and the 400 Unit, Set list was dominated by songs from their most recent album, Weathervane, and songs from Southeastern, his breakout solo album from 11 years ago. Great mix of Rock and Americana all in one show. I was not as impressed with the opening act. Singer was a little flat on high passages on some songs and drums were too loud in general. Drum sound I would think was more on the sound engineer than the band. Wanted to like them more than I did. First time at the salt shed. Very nice. good acoustics and the grandstand seats were comfortable with easy access to a bar and bathrooms. Made for a very comfortable experience. Would have loved to be closer to the stage but the price for the premium tickets were too much for me. I feel we got a good value and really enjoyed the show.

Too far to see my favorite band

by 400Fan on 3/3/24The Salt Shed Indoors (Shed) - Chicago

The Grand seats at the Salt Shed are extremely far away. I knew there was GA standing between the seats and the stage, but did not realize how far it was. With the large amount of fog on the stage, and dim lighting, sometimes I couldn't eve tell who was on stage. Standing in the GA is not an option for me; I'm only 5'2". Although Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit is my favorite band, I do not think I would attend a show here again. The band was stellar, as always. No complaints there. Another disappointment was the lack of food vendors. There was a single empanada truck OUTSIDE the venue, nothing else. I had to go outside after going through security to get something to eat, standing in 30º temperatures. Then go through security again to get back inside.

Another Home Run by Jason Isbell

by chefjms on 3/3/24The Salt Shed Indoors (Shed) - Chicago

This was the 8th time I've seen Jason Isbell over the past 10 years. I really can't say that I'm surprised, but, in all honesty, he just keeps getting better every time I see him. From start to finish, this was a wonderful set. The 400 Unit is one of the best bands out there, and they provide great sonic support to Jason's songs. The setlist was a nice blend of songs from Weathervanes, Southeastern, and a few assorted nuggets like Alabama Pines. The Salt Shed is a phenomenal venue, from acoustics to sight lines. It was a perfect spot to spend leap day with Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit. I can't wait for the next tour that brings him to Chicago.

    There’s no one better

by Sr. Morphine on 3/2/24Kodak Center - Rochester

Jason Isbell may be the best songwriter in America today. I’ve seen him with Drive By Truckers and with his band the 400 Unit many times over the years. The show I saw at the Kodak Center February 27 2024 was absolute best I have ever seen. The band is tight and Jason’s charisma is captivating. Can’t wait for the next time whenever that might be

    The Finest Singer Songwriter

by Debbo on 3/1/24Kodak Center - Rochester

Jason never disappoints, even when he has back-to-back shows, and his voice is a little tired. We didn’t care for the opening act called Palehound. When the 400 Unit hits the stage, the energy hits you and lifts you up. The first two songs were rather sad, but based on the reality of school shootings and opioid addictions. These songs are based on reality and hit you in the gut. The band is always in top form, and put on a great show.

    Incredible performance!

by Jeremy S. on 3/1/24Kodak Center - Rochester

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit may very well be the tightest touring band of our generation. They sounded incredible, and the acoustics of The Kodak Center certainly played as role as well. We were pleased that their setlist was nearly the same as their larger market shows. We thoroughly enjoyed the evening!

    Rockin show!

by Renae on 2/29/24State Theatre - Portland

Jason Isbell is a true talent! He and his band are incredible musicians and I appreciate the way he lets everyone in the band shine. He also was very respectful of when someone in the audience had to be removed from the building…he stopped his song and had them turn the lights on so they could see what they were doing and asked the audience not to cheer. I enjoyed myself greatly and think he always puts on a great show!

Jason Isbell and the 400 unit

by Cindy on 2/29/24State Theatre - Portland

Jason isbell is a 5 in my book. An unbelievable artist and lyricist. Combine him and the 400's and you will be blown away!! The reason that the is a 4 is because of the opening act, The Palehounds. Horrific! That 50 minutes of my life that I can't get back. Sorry!!! They are a NO for me (and a lot of the other surrounding fans. We couldn't wait for them to get off the stage.)

by Peter M on 2/29/24State Theatre - Portland

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit are one of the best bands out there and great live. Sadler Vaden is fantastic on guitar and Jason Isbell is as well. Great night of music in Portland, Maine.

    Die Hard JI400 fan.

by JamesDEAN on 2/29/24State Theatre - Portland

I'm a huge fan of Jason as a song writer. But seeing him live is an amazing experience. He and the band are so good live. They sound so tight, with all the nuances of the albums, but all the energy and surprises of a great rock show. Go see them and bring a friend. you won't regret it. The State Theatre in Portland, ME is a nice little venue that sounded great that night. Very friendly staff. Easy in and out. We would definitely go back.

    Great show, great venue

by Kate on 2/28/24Radio City Music Hall - New York

Another great concert by Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit. It was a sold out show and entry moved along pretty quickly. Lines for refreshments and bathrooms were not too long. All good.

    Aimee Mann - unparalleled talent

by PlanetJane71 on 2/27/24Radio City Music Hall - New York

I always loved Aimee Man’s music but hearing it live was a moving experience. Beautiful voice, tight, soulful and professional band. What a pleasure to have experience. Wish I had been able to get up to Homer to see the next nearest show on the tour. Will always regret that. Thank you, Aimee Mann and all those on stage. Unparalleled. Hope I get to see you again one day with your drummer!
