Spring Awakening raised issues that have been facing teens and parents for centuries. The mixture of contemporary music with a 19th century setting was very compelling.

    Just an OK cast

by Melgmil on 5/9/11Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

I felt like I was watching a college production of Spring Awakening. The cast was ok but certainly not "Broadway worthy". They seemed to get worn out in the last act and in general overacted throughout - was that part of the concept?. Characters died and I felt no emotional connection at all. It is such an interesting concept and the staging is so interesting that it is a shame that it never really "got there". I liked but didn't love the music...appreciated that it is non-traditional musical music but by the last song all I could think was "what are they talking about.?" The attempt to be progressive lyrics-wise just ended up seeming like nonsense to me.

    Sping Awakening was unusual

by bbnjn on 5/9/11Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

I took my granddaughter (25) for her birthday. We had both heard good things about this one and thought we would love it. Being 57 and her 25, you never know if both will enjoy the same thing. Unfortunately we were both left a bit bewildered. The performers were definitely talented and we enjoyed their enthusiasm and we were never bored but the songs were like reading poetry. You got the idea of what they were trying to portray but the wording was odd and we did NOT leave humming a tune or singing one of the songs. We did like how there were some audience members on stage as part of the show. However we had no clue as to how or why this happened and just overall were left unsure about a lot of things. I also found there to be too many sad events and not enough happy ones to feel good when we left. Sorry. Just expected more fun.

    Spring Awakening was breath taking!!

by SethTBaker on 5/8/11Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Spring Awakening has so much emotion evoked throughout it. Your heart is just gripped and sucked in!! The music is out of this world too!

This isn't for the feint of heart. This musical is dark and deals with sexual topics, and can be graphic at times. I had some older ladies sitting next to me who were ready to leave about 10 minutes into the play. Too bad for them. The music is beautiful! My favorite musical of all time!

Great music but inexperienced lead actors.

by PatronEllie on 5/8/11Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Enjoyed the musicicians and music, but the vocals and acting were weak, especially for the ticket price. A couple of the supporting actors were very good, but the two leads, although cute and with potential, just didn't have the acting or singing chops necessary for this intense show. Not terrible, but somewhat disappointing.

The actors were absolutely wonderful! And this is an amazing play! The only reason why I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is because there were some obvious problems with the mics. The tech crew really dropped the ball. The volume was too high and awfully scratchy.

    GO SEE SPRING AWAKENING!!!

by FanOf1891 on 5/7/11Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

This show is incredible! This cast is incredible! If you get the chance you need to go see this show! It will bring you to tears and change your life! How often can you say that about a musical? I saw it in November and waited impatiently 6 months for it to come back around to Chicago!! It is a MUST SEE!!!

My only complaint with the show, on this particular date, was the audio mix making the band so quiet and the actors vocals so loud. I've seen Spring Awakening now 4 times...this cast was just as good...just wish audio mix was better.

    Spring Awakening

by AuntCarol on 5/7/11Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

WOW! I wasn't sure exactly what to expect - but this exceeded any preconceived expectation I did have. The music was great - it was amazing to see so many heads bobbing along to the music during the performance.

We really enjoyed the production. Loved the sets - nice choreography - musicians did a great job of keeping below the singing voices - were able to hear all the songs and understand the words -

    Spring Awakening

by KBSK on 5/7/11Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

I've seen this play 3 times including the opening Broadway version. This Chicago production has been changed for the worst. It has none of the energy of the original play in fact it's boring. Don't go!

    Not your mothers musical

by nmf1 on 5/7/11Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

WOW! Rockin', poignant show and music. Great voices, acting, story. HOWEVER, if you are uncomfortable sitting with your parents while sex acts are simulated, talked about, graphic language used at times, well.......don't go with your parents. This is not your mothers musical (Read: Annie Get Your Gun, West Side Story, etc...). But well done and touching. It also id=s a very intriguing story about how we are 'educated', creativity and dealing with societal pressures. This is the kind of show that I believe will bring the younger generation and those who are very into music/performances/acting but not necessarily musical theatre, into the theaters. GREAT, great show!

    Better the first time

by FrostEm on 5/7/11Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

The first time I saw this show coming through Chicago it was fantastic. It had some of the original cast, the characters were presented well, we had fantastic (and cheap!) seats. I fell in love with the music and the story. This time around though, it seems that I could barely do that. The characters were delivered dryly to a point where if I were seeing it for the first time, I wouldn't have understood anyone's motives or even who some of the characters were. Moritz and the female lead were astounding. Everyone's vocals were also good. The acting, though, just didn't make me fall in love again. For what I paid for seats (which was twice the price of what I got seats for the last time WITH a ticket master promotion) I was hoping to be blown away. I'm not sure if this is a fault of the actors or poor direction.
