This show was one of the best Broadway shows I have seen yet. The acting was fantastic and one really becomes attached to the characters. The actors in the traveling cast were great singers in their own right and when combined: musical genius. It was hard at times to remember that you were at a play rather than a concert. Accordingly, it was extremely difficult to remain in your seat and not join the cast on stage or attempt to crowd surf. It definitely deserved the standing ovation it received.
I went with my teenage son. Luckily, we have a very open minded relationship. We both got uncomfortable in spots (the masturbation scene), but over all it sent a message to young and old about communicating with your child or parent. The music was very good and the comic relief was welcoming.
I had been wanting to see this show for years. I have the CD and I think the music is fantastic. The show itself is not like any other show I have seen. The staging was very different and the set is pretty much non-existent. But with the use of props and clever blocking, the scene changes are seamless and efficient. I had amazing seats -- second row center!! -- so I had a great vantage point to watch the actors work. This cast had great voices and energy. You could feel the angst pour out of these characters. I would recommend this show to any adult theatre lover. I love the show but it is NOT for kids. There is sexual content and language so leave the little ones at home. I would say it's on par with a rated R movie. Kids will see far worse on cable TV and at the movies. But Spring Awakening should be for ages 17 (if it's a mature 17) and up. If the tour brings this show near me again, I will go see it a second time, no question.
Duncan Shiek's music gave a refreshing new look at the classic American tradition of the musical. Spring Awakening is a beautiful expression of teenage emotion. Though the refreshing rock songs don't exactly add to the plot, the certainly reveal everything that the 19th century German play was trying to express. The set and lighting design were genius. Even though I was sitting the the last row of the upper balcony, I still felt the intamacy of small rock club that Shiek's songs embodied. A true gem, though it's choreography was sometimes awkward. It's thematic material, however, is not for everyone.
My daughter and I saw Spring Awakening on Broadway 4 times. Spring Awakening at the Hipppodrone Theater in Baltimore, Maryland, was a remarkable show - equal to the shows on Broadway!!!
My sisters and I went to see "Spring Awakening" in Baltimore. It was a good show--definitely not a traditional musical. Content is very mature, and at some times, graphic. Go see it--it'll give you something to think about.
Outstanding vocals. High energy. I Loved it!! Thanks for a great evening!
even though the original material was written at the end of the 1800s, it is still very relevant to today teens and parents.
I took my 2 daughters and niece (ages 15 and 14) to see Spring Awakening in Baltimore. The touring casting was incredible. I had seen the original Broadway cast and this cast was just as good. Their voices and energy were fabulous. My girls loved, loved, loved it. Fantastic music, thought-provoking story and relevant to today's teenagers.
I went into this show having read the original play, the musical script, and having listened to the soundtrack from the OBC; yet i still was shocked by how wonderful the show was live. The set was simple yet it added to the show in a large way. The lighting highlighted, instead of distracted from, the action. Finally, the cast was splendid. They performed a top quality show, their singing was spot on and the choreography was excellent. I am usually a harsh critic, but i stand before you awed and with nothing but positive things to say. I wish i could go see it again!
My fiance and I both loved the show. The music was great.
Second time seeing it, different venue. Glad to see Jake Epstein in the cast!!
3 words: ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!!! I would go back and see this again and again!! Great music, great story, great acting!
