Spring Awakening for the adventurous soul!

by artsteacher on 5/9/11Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

A fantastic piece of work for mature, intelligent audiences. The musical is fodder for great discussion and has a fantastic rock score. I've seen 4 productions in 4 locations in the U.S. and U.K. and have come to realize this musical is most effective and charismatic when performed in smaller, more intimate venues. The Oriental Theatre in Chicago, though equipped with great sound and lovely ambience, is simply too large for this type of show. It may be that this show needs a bit of a touring rest, as this particular production verged on being too precise, overacted and less "organic" than others I've seen. The chemistry and intensity of the actors overall seemed manufactured. That being said, I was happy to introduce a friend to Spring Awakening and enjoyed the evening.

The Class of 1891 is My Junk

by guiltyonekalamazoo on 5/9/11Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

I saw the show late last year at the beginning of the 2nd National Tour's run for the first time, though I'd been aware of the play for several years. My friend had even given me the soundtrack to listen to, and I did, but it quickly became a case of out of sight, out of mind. By intermission of the show in November, I had decided I would be seeing this show (and more importantly, this cast) again before their tour was done. The fact that they were passing through Chicago a few weeks before my birthday was reason enough to consider making the Oriental Theatre my second date with this show. And again it exceeded my expectations. The entire cast was spot on, particularly Courtney Markowitz (Ilse), Coby Getzbug (Moritz), Elizabeth Judd (Wendla) and Christopher Wood (Melchior). My mother, who had never seen the show at all, was dumbfounded at intermission with the power of the story, and may have even shed a tear during Blue Wind. The vocals were on point, the characters fully developed and incredibly gripping, and the story made me fall in love with the show all over again. Here comes the cheese... we've all got our junk, and my junk is Spring Awakening's 2nd National Tour.

    Amazing and perfect!!!

by Cfinley90 on 5/9/11Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

I had seen this cast two times before and was blown away by their performance! They did not disappoint again. They have brought a new light to all the characters, along with some new harmonies to the already amazing score. I highly recommend this show to anyone and everyone! It is such a great piece of theater :)

It was an interesting show and I had wanted to see this for a while, but it just fell a little flat. I just wasn't invested in any of the characters. Set design was great. Sound balance was pretty horrible, but that could be because the theater was half empty...

    An Interesting Experience

by Jellybean15 on 5/9/11Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Broadway in Chicago is always a fun place to go. The actors and actresses were amazing. I was impressed with the range of the male voices and the power of the female leads voice. The musical itself however was definitely different. It seemed as though the playwright wrote down all the things teens deal with when it comes to sex and shoved them all one after another into the show. I did not think it was horrible, but certainly not the best thing I've ever been to see. The performances were marvelous and this saved the performance for me. Though I would not recommend this to a friend, it was not awful.

    Spring Awakening was fantastic

by Demer on 5/9/11Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

The show was amazing. Spring Awakening definitely covered the full gambit of the struggles and events that teens in any era or geographical location go through and deal with as they transition to young adults. Fighting the system, to young love, to homosexuality, to suicide, to child abuse, to teen pregnancy and abortion, and finding one's self along the way; the show truly had it all.

    Words cannot explain the experience!

by AngelaRae on 5/9/11Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Spring Awakening was an experience that I would recommended to anyone, whether you are into the theater scene or not. I have read the original play and even managed to see some bootleg videos of it online, but nothing compared to seeing it in real life. The music was fantastic, and the cast did a wonderful job portraying their characters.

    Different

by commonperson on 5/9/11Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Didn't know what to expect, but it was a musical so I thought it would have some scenery changes. Story easy to follow. Interesting stage layout with many audience members on stage. Great band both musically and visually as they are on stage throughout the performance. Sometimes the singers were holding hand mikes and too loud to make out the lyrics. Accomplished musical cast.

    Spring Awakening was fantastic!

by davidsh2 on 5/9/11Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Spring Awakening was a rock musical with an indy twist to it. A lot of pumped up music, pumped up hairdo's and tons of frustrated teenagers! :-) This musical was really great, although I have to say that this coming of age musical did leave me confused a bit all the way up to the intermission. I didn't quite know what to think of this barrage of issues coming up on stage. Each person had a different issue ..which was cool...BUT.. it did leave the audience wondering.. .uh.. is there a story line or is this just singing about your issue? The storyline came together MUCH better in the second half. If I had left, I would have missed the dramatic scenes in act II. A couple things... this is really NOT for kids under 16 as it has nudity and some imitated masturbatory scenes.

Never has a musical left me so challenged. The music was beautiful. And the story left me thinking - eager to talk.

This is a great show - the songs, choreography and set design are amazing. The actress playing Ilse blew me away. I didn't feel the other actors were meant for these roles, though. I'm glad I got the chance to see it on stage, but next time, I hope the cast is better.

    Disappointing

by Mswnext on 5/9/11Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Leah Michelle and Jonathon Groff must be better performers than I even imagined, if they could turn this numbingly stupid show into a Tony winner. Would it be asking too much to have a single, believable character on stage? Dancing and music were as expected, and the acting was okay but could not overcome the book's many flaws. Next time, bring a credible plot.

    Spring Awakening in Chicago

by ALR75 on 5/9/11Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Very good performances, strong singing. I didn't know much about this play but I really liked it. Surprise ending. Very emotional. Message is still very relevant today! Parents- this is NOT for kids.

    Superb musical

by AGuilty1 on 5/9/11Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

The only downside to our experience was that the theater stunk--mild sewage odor. This was a non-equity show, so some of the performances were a little hallow, but not enough to overwhelm this incredible musical. The two leads were very good. I urge anyone who is considering going to Spring Awakening to do so--more than once. It was a shame that the house was less than 1/2 filled.

    Great Musical, Good Production

by MoonChild7673 on 5/9/11Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

I have seen Spring Awakening three times. My first time with the OBC, which was outstanding! My second time in 2009 here in Chicago which was remarkable. The third time was this current performance which was a good production. The cast did well, however, the singing was not always on key and the audio was not up to par. The acting was average. Overall, I would have still recommended this experience as it is a musical that should not be missed.
