About Decibel Metal & Beer Fest

Decibel is one of the world's most respected authorities on heavy metal. Or, as they put it, they've been "extremely extreme since 2004." Either way, when they curate a metal festival, the forecast is for a 100 percent chance of excellence and annihilation.

It all started with the Decibel Magazine tours in the 2000s — six punishing jaunts across North America that featured bands like Behemoth, Cannibal Corpse, Carcass, and At the Gates. In 2009, the publication started their first monthly craft beer column, because what pairs better with metal than a good brew?

The natural marriage of these two projects became the Decibel Metal & Beer Fest, inaugurated in 2017 and showcasing some of North America's greatest craft breweries, including Unibroue and Three Floyds. The first iteration of the fest, which took place in Philadelphia in April 2017, saw some of metal's heaviest acts, including Sleep, Pig Destroyer, Municipal Waste, and Agoraphobic Nosebleed, in addition to a number of excellent local groups.

In 2018 and ‘19, the madness gets turned up to 11 as the festival continues in Philadelphia and adds a weekend in L.A. In December 2018, the L.A. leg of the fest sees some truly insane acts — presented by Metal Blade Records, because why not? — including Testament, Godflesh, Power Trip, and Pig Destroyer. Taking place at L.A.'s esteemed Wiltern Theatre, the event features brews from local brewery Three Weavers, as well Three Floyds, Unibroue, Burial, Left Hand, and more.

The Philadelphia leg of the festival in April 2019 sees bands like Baroness, Deafheaven, Obituary, and Enslaved and features beer from Three Floyds, Atlas, Burnt Hickory, and others. The second year of the Decibel Metal & Beer Fest is sure to be full of all the fire and grit you'd expect from an event curated by the world's greatest metal magazine. Tickets for both events are on sale now.

    Excellent

by AK on 12/5/23Summit - Denver

Great variety of bands, great venue, great breweries. Never had to wait long to get samples from any brewery. Only thing is that communication about other events going on with the fest could have been better (not just IG posts/stories).

    Definitely Worth It

by Poizin on 4/18/23The Fillmore Philadelphia - Philadelphia

Overall it was absolutely worth it, the Filmore is an amazing venue and the staff there were attentive and caring. Most of the bands were amazing, though the sound engineering needed some fine tuning.

    Highlights and lowlights

by metalguy69420 on 4/18/23The Fillmore Philadelphia - Philadelphia

Lots of amazing acts like Gorguts, Incantation, Undeath, and Eyehategod made the fest worth attending. However, I was sad that they decided to include more "core" bands like Fuming Mouth and All out War, and pander to mainstream crowds with the headliners for both nights. I would be very disappointed if Decibel continues to incorporate more metalcore and deathcore going forward. Also, drink prices are too damn high!!! The beer ticket is a little too expensive to be worth it if you don't wanna get black out drunk, and $9 drafts are just way too expensive as the cheapest option. I actually skipped the first 4 hours of the fest on Saturday for this reason - if the venue had re-entry or reasonable drink options, I would have showed up earlier and ultimately spent more money

Drunken Weekend at Decibel Metal and Beer Fest

by Blow in from Ireland on 4/18/23The Fillmore Philadelphia - Philadelphia

This was my first ever time at this festival. After reading the beer and metal pass details, I had assumed it would be “inappropriate” to be that guy who just samples beer all night and doesn’t buy anything. Then I realized that was the purpose. The venue was always busy but never felt overcrowded and claustrophobic. Music was great and the “beer area” was just sheltered enough from the bands to be able to still listen but carry on a conversation with the quite diverse and amazing group of people that showed up. Great music, great beer, great people who attended. Doubt it will be my last time there.

Great Show - Merch and Beer Flow Tho

by Abi on 12/6/22Summit - Denver

The line up and merch was impeccable, but I think there needs to be some rearranging where the tables are at since there was some confusion between the merch and pizza lines. Then I felt that I kind of wasted my beer ticket because it was a little tricky to get to the beers and I would get bumped going down the stairs while getting out of the way and I’d end up with maybe a sip of beer left. Maybe slightly bigger cups? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I’d definitely go again but not with the beer add on unless there’s some changes.
