About Decibel Metal & Beer Fest

Decibel is one of the world's most respected authorities on heavy metal. Or, as they put it, they've been "extremely extreme since 2004." Either way, when they curate a metal festival, the forecast is for a 100 percent chance of excellence and annihilation.

It all started with the Decibel Magazine tours in the 2000s — six punishing jaunts across North America that featured bands like Behemoth, Cannibal Corpse, Carcass, and At the Gates. In 2009, the publication started their first monthly craft beer column, because what pairs better with metal than a good brew?

The natural marriage of these two projects became the Decibel Metal & Beer Fest, inaugurated in 2017 and showcasing some of North America's greatest craft breweries, including Unibroue and Three Floyds. The first iteration of the fest, which took place in Philadelphia in April 2017, saw some of metal's heaviest acts, including Sleep, Pig Destroyer, Municipal Waste, and Agoraphobic Nosebleed, in addition to a number of excellent local groups.

In 2018 and ‘19, the madness gets turned up to 11 as the festival continues in Philadelphia and adds a weekend in L.A. In December 2018, the L.A. leg of the fest sees some truly insane acts — presented by Metal Blade Records, because why not? — including Testament, Godflesh, Power Trip, and Pig Destroyer. Taking place at L.A.'s esteemed Wiltern Theatre, the event features brews from local brewery Three Weavers, as well Three Floyds, Unibroue, Burial, Left Hand, and more.

The Philadelphia leg of the festival in April 2019 sees bands like Baroness, Deafheaven, Obituary, and Enslaved and features beer from Three Floyds, Atlas, Burnt Hickory, and others. The second year of the Decibel Metal & Beer Fest is sure to be full of all the fire and grit you'd expect from an event curated by the world's greatest metal magazine. Tickets for both events are on sale now.

    Highlights and lowlights

by metalguy69420 on 4/18/23The Fillmore Philadelphia - Philadelphia

Lots of amazing acts like Gorguts, Incantation, Undeath, and Eyehategod made the fest worth attending. However, I was sad that they decided to include more "core" bands like Fuming Mouth and All out War, and pander to mainstream crowds with the headliners for both nights. I would be very disappointed if Decibel continues to incorporate more metalcore and deathcore going forward. Also, drink prices are too damn high!!! The beer ticket is a little too expensive to be worth it if you don't wanna get black out drunk, and $9 drafts are just way too expensive as the cheapest option. I actually skipped the first 4 hours of the fest on Saturday for this reason - if the venue had re-entry or reasonable drink options, I would have showed up earlier and ultimately spent more money

Drunken Weekend at Decibel Metal and Beer Fest

by Blow in from Ireland on 4/18/23The Fillmore Philadelphia - Philadelphia

This was my first ever time at this festival. After reading the beer and metal pass details, I had assumed it would be “inappropriate” to be that guy who just samples beer all night and doesn’t buy anything. Then I realized that was the purpose. The venue was always busy but never felt overcrowded and claustrophobic. Music was great and the “beer area” was just sheltered enough from the bands to be able to still listen but carry on a conversation with the quite diverse and amazing group of people that showed up. Great music, great beer, great people who attended. Doubt it will be my last time there.

Great Show - Merch and Beer Flow Tho

by Abi on 12/6/22Summit - Denver

The line up and merch was impeccable, but I think there needs to be some rearranging where the tables are at since there was some confusion between the merch and pizza lines. Then I felt that I kind of wasted my beer ticket because it was a little tricky to get to the beers and I would get bumped going down the stairs while getting out of the way and I’d end up with maybe a sip of beer left. Maybe slightly bigger cups? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I’d definitely go again but not with the beer add on unless there’s some changes.

    Thought it was great but....

by JJ on 12/5/22Summit - Denver

It was a great lineup all the bands were awesome. The beers are good but it should have been at a bigger place. There is very little room to adequately get to the beer tastings.

    Stop forcing paper ticket shipment

    by Wayniac666 on 12/5/22Summit - Denver

Digital tickets, I don't want to pay $16 to ship paper ticket. Its in poor taste and wasteful in 2022 to not offer digital tickets, but rather to take hard earned money unnecessarily. The show was great, the venorship is an egregious money grab. Disgusting.

It was such a great time. Immolation, Dark Funeral and Cannibal just killed it. 🤘🏽

A big downslide from previous years

by JRH on 6/19/22The Fillmore Philadelphia - Philadelphia

We've been to all but 1 Decibel Metal and Beer festival in the past, and thought it was definitely one of the best events around. This year: WAY over sold. You could barely move around and even in the upstairs bar area. There were plenty of people up there without wristbands. Rude and aggressive staff. I've been the Filmore probably a dozen times in the last 5 years and it was always fun. This year the entire crew seemed unpleasant and acted as if the paying audience was a major inconvenience. To the point one sick person was not allowed to go to a bathroom and get cleaned up and there was no attempt to assist them medically despite obvious physical distress. The music was great. Only reason the event didn't get one star. Brewers tried their best but most brought canned beer I could have bought up the street. By 2 hours after opening most of the 'special' beers brewed for the event and the bands were already tapped out. Bait and Switch? Bag planning? Over sold venue? The layout was genuinely frustrating in trying to get to one of the brewer's tables. And then on top of that for the first time at this event, there were people literally standing at tables just refilling glass after glass and drinking instead of tasting something and moving on. We ate the tickets on night two rather than return to a shitty environment. I've been to music events all around the world in the last 30 years. This one was simply poorly executed.

    Great Festival

by Marlowe is spelled with an e on 6/15/22The Fillmore Philadelphia - Philadelphia

I love this festival. Love the music. Love the beer. Wish it wasn't in a city with heroin needles lying on the ground that the local government can't be bothered to pick up but, we can't have everything. Still greatest festival ever. Please keep having it.

    Excellent show!

by Cactussabukasai on 6/14/22The Fillmore Philadelphia - Philadelphia

First time at the Fillmore, and thought the set up was fantastic...sound was spot-on, and the last 3 bands were as good as I have ever seen/heard them! Plenty of bar space to grab an adult beverage or 3, and I enjoyed looking through the vendors in the front area, browsing through CDs, LPs, shirts etc. Overall, excellent experience and hope they host another one of these next year!

Philly's Best Fest - Always Well Done 5 Stars

by milligoat on 6/14/22The Fillmore Philadelphia - Philadelphia

Hard to know where to begin singing the praises about this fest and how great it is. I know a lot goes into it starting with Decibel Magazine curating the talent a year in advance. Never a disappointment on who they book. Then same with what breweries they lineup. Almost never a bad beer to be had. I was telling my friend how the Fillmore is the perfect spot for this event every year (I've attended the past 4 fests [2018, 2019, 2021 and 2022 only missing 2017's flagship]). They have the capacity and staff and room to host. Breweries upstairs where you can hear the stage fine and see monitors. Or if you prefer the floor during the performance, you can see and hear the stage great from anywhere you stand. I've never had one complaint about the sound of any band I've ever seen here (this fest or otherwise). As I get older, I feel like I'm slowing down on trying to attend multiple fests per year, but if I had to pick one that I'd keep attending, it's this one, and I hope it stays at the Fillmore. It just makes so much sense! Thanks to the staff for keeping everyone supported and safe! See you in October for Sunny Day Real Estate and then again in 2023 for the next Decibel Metal and Beer Fest!

    Excellent event besides Security

by JW on 6/14/22The Fillmore Philadelphia - Philadelphia

Excellent event except for Security. The security to get in seemed very hit or miss when it came to enforcement - apparently wallet chains are a "no-go" but while walking the event i saw plenty of people with wallet chains or chains on their pants/belts - so why did i have to take my chain back to the car when others got in no problem? Also the security at the stage was laughable, you have a bunch of skinny, 5 feet tall kids trying to catch crowd surfers and doing a bad job of it. Aside from that? Was a solid event

Awesome and epic event, I love it.

by Victor on 6/13/22The Fillmore Philadelphia - Philadelphia

The 2 days I’ve been there were fantastic, I had such a good time like no other. One of the best experiences in my live. I love the bands, I love the merchandise and the very friendly brothers and sisters of Metal who had a lot of fun too. PLEASE, PLEASE,PLEASE. Don’t dare to cancel or not to do the same festival for the next year. ILL BE WAITING FOR THE NEXT ONE AND FLY AGAIN FROM NASHVILLE.

Other than the bathrooms , it was a great experience

by Rick B on 6/13/22The Fillmore Philadelphia - Philadelphia

Other than food costs, and the filthy bathrooms, with no soap by day 2 and no paper towels, it was an excellent experience. Great performances by all the bands.

    Better Description of Event

by Bryant Lopez on 12/14/21The Belasco - Los Angeles

I purchased three tickets, no where on its social media platforms nor through the Ticketmaster app did the even indicate the event was for 21 only. I was disappointed to find out at the doors and requested a refunded but have not heard back, ticketmaster should do a better job and handling situations like this. I’m very disappointed.
