Beatles all night, how could you go wrong

by BaRay on 5/2/10Boettcher Concert Hall - Denver

A great night out for any Beatles lover, and for anyone who enjoys hearing the oldies with the added symphony mix of instruments. A related note. The strings could have been amplified so that that added quality could be heard more. When the amplified band was playing the Symphony instrumentation was often completely lost.

    Great idea. Terrible execution

by DisappointedBeatlesFan on 5/2/10Boettcher Concert Hall - Denver

This show should have been called CSO accompanies Jeans' n Classics. Meaning, CSO will not play a key role in this concert. Jeans' n Classics' lead singer, Jean Meilleur, is a 80's sound-alike singer that destroyed every Beatles song he sang by giving them his David Bowie impersonation. This concert would have been great if Jean Meilleur had not been a part of the project and the CSO would have been allowed to sing during the first act (St. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album).

    Please fix the sound!

by Lsound on 5/2/10Boettcher Concert Hall - Denver

I really want to rate this higher, but the sound at Boetcher is just horribly mediocre, and it's been the same every time I've been. An orchestra is meant to sound magnificent , and that's not what comes across. It's impossible to pick out any subtle nuances, and there is just no "fullness" at all.

    Great set list

by CSOfan1 on 5/2/10Boettcher Concert Hall - Denver

Well, where else can you see the entire Sergeant Pepper album played live? The Jeans N' Classics band together with the CSO is great. The vocalist is talented and fun to watch, but his voice is lower pitched and raspy for covering Beatles tunes. After the intermission, they played 9 more Beatles songs with the both the CSO and this time the CSO chorus joined in. Overall, 4 stars for sure and worth seeing, but don't expect it to sound like a "clone" performance, it definitely takes on it's own sound...

    Title was adequate

by mercedessl500 on 5/2/10Boettcher Concert Hall - Denver

The music was, as expected, very good. The symphony and Scott O'Neil were excellent as was the chorus. Jean Meilleur does not have a good voice. He could not carry the quality of the songs adequately.

Nothing special. Maybe a 3.5 rating, but not quite a 4.

Magnificent sound! Yumi was phenomenal in her two pieces! The beginning pieces were good, but not super-impressive. However the final pieces of the show really came together and were very very beautiful.

    Yumi Hwang-Williams was fantastic!

by MarvinJill on 4/19/10Boettcher Concert Hall - Denver

Yumi Hwang-Williams not only looked wonderful, she also perfomed beautifully. It almost brought tears in performing "Lark Asending". I enjoyed it very much. So sorry someone had a coughing speel during the top of her performance.

Wonderful performance. The Lark Assending by The Vaughn Williams was about as beautiful as anything I've heard. The orchestra performed Elgar Enigma Variations about as well as I've heard. Wonderful. Yumi Hwang Williams was exceptional throughout all the dynamics of the pieces. We really enjoyed it.

    Ravel and Elgar: Excellent!

by SincerelyAudrey on 4/18/10Boettcher Concert Hall - Denver

What an amazing performance! Brilliantly played and conducted. Yumi Hwang-Williams was a treat to watch, especially during "The Lark Ascending." My wife and I have heard this piece numerous times on recording and it was even better in performance. Our only complaint is not having another hour worth of music to listen too! Wonderful performance by the orchestra and soloist!

    Blah

by Duram on 4/13/10Boettcher Concert Hall - Denver

The first segment was so-so. The second segment with the cello solo I didn't like at all. It was drab with a lot of string plucking and odd pauses. The third segment had more of the uplifting, soaring melody that I can get into. The conductor was entertaining with his twitching.

    Superb Dvorak!

by Krattle on 4/12/10Boettcher Concert Hall - Denver

I had not heard the Sibelius piece or the Shostakovitch Cello Concerto before, but they were performed beautifully. Their performance of Dvorak's New World Symphony was absolutely marvelous, though. Unforgettable, and I would have to say definitely up there with the Berlin Philharmonic's performance as conducted by Von Karajan. Their shining moment was definitely the Largo, which they did with such delicacy.

    Way down and then up

by bertnern on 4/12/10Boettcher Concert Hall - Denver

The conductor was correct in syaing the first piece had not been performed in Denver. The piece was boring. Perhaps this is why it hadn't been up to par for performance. The best part of this symphony was indeed Dvorak. The first half put me into hibernation.

    Great Dvorak

by ColoradoKerr on 4/11/10Boettcher Concert Hall - Denver

The first half of the symphony was more of a filler, good Shostakovich, mediocre Kirshbaum but then after the break coming back to an excellant performance of Dvorak. My only disappointment were my seats, although paid top dollar for Orch 2 ( all orch 1 gone ), the seats, section K seats 13 and 14 looked underneath a balcony. I felt like not on the the vision but the sound was tunnel.

This concert was wonderful---the cello soloist was superb--- and we loved the Irish guest conducor, Douglas Boyd--- he brought the orchestra to their peak of performance and the audience loved him as well.

    Great but.....

by BillCSO on 4/4/10Boettcher Concert Hall - Denver

The CSO was sensational. So was Karen Gomyo. But she only played the 1st half of the concert and didn't return for the 2nd. That was diappointing. I didn't kn ow a guest musician would only come for part of the show. One piece of work is not enough to really get to see how deep her talent is. The 2nd half, the TCHAIKOVSKY was a great piece of work done very well and her talents as a violinist woudl have been great to see.

    April 2nd 2010 - Bernstein, Tchaikovsky

by FeistyMaestro on 4/3/10Boettcher Concert Hall - Denver

The seats are impossible at the venue, very uncomfortable. Seats should not be designed "by committee". Overall acoustics mediocre. A shell would have greatly enhanced the experience. The performance of the Orchestra and Ms. Gomyo was flawless, with her interpretation of Bernstein often inspired. Litton is accomplished, and it showed. I would not go again (to this venue) because of seats amd acoustics, but would recommend the performances (with those caviats) to associates... Thanks!
