    rockin evening!!

by laxmom30 on 9/28/09Boettcher Concert Hall - Denver

The entire concert was a blast. Most fun I've had in awhile. Had forgotten the truly amazing music that has been written in our lifetime. Armstrong, Basie, Ellington... the list can go on and on. Marvin Hamlisch was most charming and personable. Made the audience feel right at home.

    Pops-Jazz Ambassadors

by CSOPopsfan on 9/27/09Boettcher Concert Hall - Denver

A fast paced, incredibly entertaining evening. The program was interesting, informative and the combination of Marvin Hamlish, the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and the Jazz Ambassadors made for one of the most enjoyable evenings that my wife and I have experienced in a long time...made us feel great about the creative country we live in!

    Marvin Hamlish is a hoot!

by ErieJim on 9/27/09Boettcher Concert Hall - Denver

An evening with the Army Jazz Ambassadors and Marvin Hamlish was just plain fun. Instead of a lot of stuffy high brow syphony music, we were treated to the immense talents of many excellent musicians, who were also enjoying every minute of it - - - This experience was the best-kept secret in Denver entertainment all year!

    Chris Thile's Mandolin Concerto

by CitizenVA on 9/22/09Boettcher Concert Hall - Denver

The concerto itself was phenomenal. Chris Thile proved himself every bit the virtuoso with the concerto. Musically interesting, it was a real treat! The Colorado Symphony orchestra members were also in top form during the concerto. The Bach Partita as an encore was beautiful! The only thing to really mar the show was when the orchestra had to be reshuffled prior to playing "Rhapsody In Blue". They took over five minutes to rearrange themselves and this was during the first half of the show. A major rearranging of the orchestra members should be done during intermissions so as not to hold the audience hostage. And the Rhapsodie was rushed. But overall a fantastic show!

Amazing performance with Chris Thile and CSO

by MondalinJ on 9/21/09Boettcher Concert Hall - Denver

Chris Thile is simply my favorite artist in any genre. His entry into the classical world through composition was just great. The CSO was of course spectacular as well, especially on Rhapsody in Blue.

    Great Sunday afternoon concert

by DrBeckie on 9/21/09Boettcher Concert Hall - Denver

I loved the varied pieces played. They ranged from familar favorites to completely new and fresh. I also enjoyed the encore pieces featuring Chris Thile. I usually don't expect to have bonuses at a symphony!

    Chris Thile's Mandolin Soars!!

by Cornel on 9/21/09Boettcher Concert Hall - Denver

Although Chris Thile was the initial draw for us attending yesterday's concert, I will begin by saying the performance of Gerswhin's "Rhapsody in Blue" was incredible and our favorite piece of the day. From the opening siren of that sassy clarinet, Kahan's piano virtuosity and keen sense of timing made us want the musicians to keep on playing. The "bonus track" of 3 variations satisfied like a little dessert. Then on to the mandolin concerto. We were positioned perfectly in orchestra 1 so we could see Chris Thile's finger's flying. How can anyone flat pick with that blur of fluency and feeling? We loved the bridge from classical music to bluegrass showcasing not only Chris Thile's roots as a bluegrass musician but giving us what felt like an insider's look at one of the CSO musicians - a fiddle champion! So great. Chris Thile's clear enthusiasm at hearing his concerto performed and his sincere thanks to CSO members for their kindness and talent, we felt did loads to humanize the experience of "going to the symphony."

    Good but too technical

by BSmiley on 9/21/09Boettcher Concert Hall - Denver

The talent and venue were great. All the pieces were preformed well. I was a little disappointed with Chris Thile. He is a master musician but it seemed that he was trying to be too technical. I am sure that the piece was difficult too play and it was fun to watch, however it was not as pleasant to my ears. The Bach piece he played was ear candy and very enjoyable. I would recommend seeing it.

    Chris Thile and the CSO

by Anna3 on 9/20/09Boettcher Concert Hall - Denver

CSO was excellent as usual. I appreciated the extra Gershwin piece, 3 Preludes. The mandolin concerto was impressive especially for such a young person to write. I still prefer the mandolin in small ensembles. I liked the extra Bach piece and the duet with the fiddler and piano.

    American Festival, Chris Thile, Mandolin

by grandmayoufox on 9/20/09Boettcher Concert Hall - Denver

Loved "Billy the Kid" and "Rhapsody in Blue" - Jeffrey Kahane is amazing on the piano. So much energy and talent. His duet with the principal clarinetist was a gem too. The percussion piece was just OK; we were glad when it was over. And, despite having loved Chris Thile when he was with Nickel Creek, the mandolin concerto was way too "out there" for our taste. I finally gave up and went to sleep. His duet with the fiddle champion, and duet with Maestro Kahane, however, were wonderful. Regarding the "Talk Balk" after the concert: please, everyone, remember to repeat the question, and please (Chris, this means you) hold the microphone up so we can actually hear what you say. The discussion was so affected, esoteric and ethereal as to be rendered meaningless. Like the Emperor's New Clothes, there was no substance. Very "twee," as the English say.

CO Symphony and Chris Thile were amazing!!

by rockiemtnhi on 9/20/09Boettcher Concert Hall - Denver

The Colorado Symphony and Chris Thile's American Festival were in one word AMAZING! The Symphony performed Copland and Gershwin and director Jeffrey Kahane tore up the grand piano's ivories on Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue--astounding-the audience jumped to their feet at the completion of this composition! And Chris Thile's Concerto for mandolin was really surprising and inspiring--Thile's love for the mandolin and performing is so apparent. But I found his solo performance of Bach on the mandolin one of the most amazing things I have ever heard!!

    Thile and Kahane...Rad Combo

by jetgirl on 9/20/09Boettcher Concert Hall - Denver

Jeffrey Kahane is my favorite CSO conductor and I simply adore Chris Thile's hipster-bluegrass groove (yeah, "hipster" and "bluegrass", what a combo eh?). Seeing Kahane's cute and animated mannerisms alongside the unique mandolin talent of Thile made my evening! My ears got the pleasure of hearing how various American composers have broken symphony "rules" over the years and how Thile is pushing the limits in his own way. While Thile's mandolin seemed a touch too dominant in volume at times over the other instruments during his main performance, it was still a delightful listening treat. During the summer I saw Thile's group the Punch Brothers perform bluegrass-interpreted cover songs of Radiohead and fell in love with Thile's unique approach to a music genre (bluegrass, folk etc.) that doesn't usually get associated with contemporary or popular culture. Hearing Thile continue to push the limits of classical and contemporary was wonderful and I hope to attend another mandolin-symphony event next year!

    Amazing performance!

by Marci007 on 9/13/09Boettcher Concert Hall - Denver

The symphony orchestra was amazing. Ms. Fliter had an outstanding show and greatly augmented the evening's performance. I would definitely go again.
