Miami Hurricanes at Watsco Center
Coral Gables, Florida, is home to one of the most competitive teams in ACC men's basketball. The Hurricanes play out of the on-campus Watsco Center, which first opened in 2003 as the University of Miami Convocation Center, and currently seats 8,000. They are coached by Jim Larrañaga, who previously led George Mason University to the 2006 Final Four before joining the Hurricanes in 2011.
Miami Hurricanes Men's Basketball History
Miami Hurricanes basketball has several distinct beginnings. The original University of Miami basketball team first took the court in 1926, but went dormant for the 1929-30 season, from 1932 to 1938, and from 1942 to 1945. In 1960, the Hurricanes made an incredible run to the Elite Eight under coach Bruce Hale. The legendary Rick Barry starred for the Hurricanes in the mid '60s, before a Hall of Fame career in the pros, and also before marrying coach Hale's daughter. However, the Hurricanes lacked a permanent on-campus arena, and had to play at the Miami Beach Convention Center 15 miles away. This contributed to low attendance and, in 1971, the "temporary" discontinuation of the men's program.
In 1983, a drive began to raise funds to restart the program, and on November 22, 1985, Miami defeated The Citadel 85-77 for their first victory in 14 years, en route to a .500 record against a tough schedule. Miami's second act included an initial three seasons at the James L. Knight Center, which was more of an auditorium than a field house, followed by a decade and a half at Miami Arena, before their first on-campus facility opened in 2003. In coach Leonard Hamilton's second season, in 1991, Miami joined the Big East, winning their first regular-season conference title during Hamilton's final season in 2000. In 2013, the Hurricanes won both the ACC regular season and conference tournament championship, on their way to a Sweet 16 appearance behind the play of sophomore guard and Lute Olson National Player of the Year recipient Shane Larkin.
Great atmosphere. Nothing like college sports for fun.
Watching the Memphis Tigers destroy the Miami Hurricanes was awesome.
Had a great time. Seats were pretty good and the game was competetitive.
first game, although no many audience but the game was ausome
Outstanding job by the Hurricanes to comeback from a first half deficit. Metro rail way to go to Bank United Center. Station across the street from the venue.
Easy to find and order tickets. Quality seats at very affordable price for group of 4. Ordered one hour before event, no issues. Will call was quick and free way to get tickets.
I watched the Miami Hurricanes men's basketball team defeat the Missouri State Bears in their 2011 NIT bid. Sat courtside with my father behind the Miami Hurricane bench and had a blast! The ticket prices were exceptional and the fees were minimal. Thanks to the Miami Hurricanes for hosting the event at the BankUnited center and ticketmaster for notifying me about the ticket sale! -John K. GO CANES!
Great stadium ... every seat is a great seat! Go to a game and see!
Great crowd, atmosphere was ripe for a big game...too bad the team didn't feel the same way. Should have beaten Clemson.
The basketball game down was to the wire. We had a lot of fun. Parking is free.
Good event. Nice atmosphere. Good value. Good seats.
Great pomp and circumstance. Great spectacle by the cheer leaders for Miami, and much enthusiasm on the part of the many Duke alumni who came. I saw almost as many Duke blue shirts, caps, and hats as I saw the green, white, and orange of Miami fans. My seat was great, a few rows behind the Duke bench. I am a Duke fan although I also follow my Alma Mater, Texas A&M. I am a great fan of Coach K. The closeness to the court allowed me to read the faces of players and coaches. I believe I could tell when the tide was turning in favor of a team by the expressions on the faces and the determination or disgust and frustration that could be read on the players demeanor. All seats at the Bank United Center should offer a pretty good view; none are up high so far that cannot even see the ball. I once watched the University of Memphis from a high up seat at the Pyramid in Memphis and swore I would never return there. The only inconvenience I found was that the walking distance from the parking lot that faces Dixie Highway was a bit much for someone like me who has some problems with a leg. I still don't know if the parking in front of the basketball arena was available for people with handicapped stickers. The walk was a bit much for me. Enjoyed the game tremendously.
Well, if you like sports, live is always better. Unfortunately the Canes don't have a good enough team to bring out the passion in the arena, or the students, to make it the atmosphere that makes college basketball so special. But it's definitely worth it to attend.
Great game, great view (even from the last row), great venue!
Definitely worth taking in the excitement of ACC college basketball in a nice venue with all seats close to the action
This game started out great, thought the Canes were going to blow UNC out of the water. The Canes had a 14 point lead which they just gave away. Too many turnovers, players looking as though they did not know what the plays were. The players standing around not watching the ball; missing passes, huddled together. No pressure defense, missed cues, lack of mind on game. The play calling needs to be adjusted or changed. The Canes fans need to be more vocal to help inspire the team!
GAME WAS GREAT. EVEN THOUGH WE LOST, THE GAME WAS GREAT. I GOT TO SEE TWO OF MY FAVORITE TEAMS, IT WAS JUST EXCITING TO SEE.. THANKS
fsu won a close one that was great! losing most the game
I greatly enjoyed my 1st game in the relatively new UM Bank United Center, including the free parking.
Great game, great seats, great crowd. Its all about the U.
